How guest reviews work
Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We use a weighted review system which means that the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
- Politically sensitive comments
- Promotional content
- Illegal activities
- Personal or sensitive information (e.g. emails, phone numbers or credit card info)
- Swear words, sexual references, hate speech, discriminatory remarks, threats, or references to violence
- Spam and fake content
- Animal cruelty
- Impersonation (e.g. if the writer is claiming to be someone else)
- Any violation of our review guidelines.
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
Guidelines and standards for Reviews
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options may be available (by type of traveller, by score, etc.).

Verified reviewWonderful Stay at Casa Cactus! We had a fantastic time at Casa Cactus in Buenavista. Jey, Sebastian, and their staff were incredibly friendly and made us feel right at home from the moment we arrived. We followed their advice on what to visit in the area and where to eat, and it did not disappoint. The atmosphere at the house was very comfortable and relaxing, and we truly felt well taken care of throughout our stay. Buenavista is a very calm and local village with super friendly people — away from the noise of Bacalar, but close enough if you want to make a quick visit. We especially loved the breakfast – everything was fresh and delicious, with both continental and local options (the best cochinita pibil we’ve tried!). The facilities were also excellent: clean, well-maintained, and beautifully designed. One of the highlights of our trip was the sailing excursion. Sebastian took us on a sailboat through the Bacalar Lagoon, where we could see the beautiful colors of the water and take a swim. Afterwards, he treated us to some mojitos and guacamole. We highly recommend Casa Cactus and would definitely love to come back!

Verified reviewJasmin and Sebastian were lovely hosts and made our stay at Casa Cactus in Buenavista unforgettable. Everything is to like about Casa Cactus, from the carefully decorated room, to the food that is creative, delicious and fresh, to the garden with beautiful plants, a pool to refresh and attentive staff. To make the most of Casa Cactus I recommend having your own car (although the hosts can help with arranging a taxi). The place is perfect if you are looking to relax, lay back and enjoy nature, but also be able to get to more lively places like Bacalar which is 20-30 mins by car. Jasmin and Sebastian made everything to ensure our stay would be perfect and gave us great advice on things to do and visit to get a real authentic experience. (They suggested a nearby spot for a beach day on the lagoon. The spot was secluded, and felt very intimate and private, with the jungle in the background, it was a bless compared to the crowds in Bacalar. Furthermore Buenavista is a perfect spot to visit Bacalar, but also other attractions nearby like Mahahual, a town on the Caribbean side, the ruins of Chacchoben or doing guided jungle tour.) Be aware there's not much choice for eating out in Buenavista, but you won't need it with the delicious food prepared by Jasmin. We preferred having dinner at Casa Cactus because of how good it was. Me and my girlfriend had the best stay here and would definitely recommend it.

Verified reviewWe had an amazing time at Casa Cactus. The hosts, Jey and Sébastien, were very kind and welcoming, always ready to offer great advice on places to visit and recommendations. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay in their peaceful and beautiful property, surrounded by a lovely pool and an exotic garden. We highly recommend it – it's the perfect spot if you're looking to experience an authentic village, with a car to explore the surrounding areas. We also had the sailing experience with Sébastien, which was a private and great moment on the lagoon. Thank you, Jey and Sébastien!"

Verified reviewRelaxing and calm place. You feel like in the middle of nowhere. Perfect place to relax. Hosts are really nice. Buenavista is a small village. But all people in village is super friendly. Very nice community. Beautiful garden and clean pool, from water of the lagoon. You can feel the nature.
We didn’t include the breakfast on our booking. So we believe food price could be cheaper for what you get when paid directly on site. Bed was not the most comfy one for us. It was a bit hard but this is always a personal feeling. 😉

Verified reviewThis was one of the most special places we stayed during our trip! From the very first moment, Sebastian and Jey made us feel so welcome — like being part of a family. Their warmth, kindness, and care for every little detail created such a beautiful atmosphere. Our 3-year-old son felt completely at home and could move around freely and safely, which made the stay even more relaxing for us as a family. The room was perfect — spacious, comfortable, and ideal for our needs. The homemade food was absolutely delicious, and sharing a meal together felt like dining with friends. We also took a boat tour with them, which was a fantastic and unforgettable experience. The garden and pool area are calm, shady, and full of love for nature — perfect for unwinding. You can feel that everything here is made with heart. If you are looking for a place that is more than just a hotel — a place with soul, genuine hospitality, and a family-friendly atmosphere — this is it. We are so grateful for the time we spent here and hope to return one day!
There was truly nothing we didn’t like — our only regret was that we couldn’t stay longer, as our trip had to go on.

Verified reviewVery nice accommodation. The room was spacious and comfortable, and the outdoor sitting area and pool were great. There was plenty of greenery and many birds in the garden. The owner and staff were also very friendly.
The bed was a bit hard, but other than that, everything else was great.

Verified reviewI spent more than 2 weeks in Mexico with my partner and friends and this was definitely the best accommodation. The rooms are very spacious and nicely designed. I really liked the garden and swimming pool area (very relaxing!). Casa Cactus Buenavista has a great location to explore places like Bacalar, Los Rapidos, Mahahual. Regarding food, the host can prepare it for you if you order in advance (it was so delicious!!!). You can also visit a local restaurant located few minutes on foot from Casa Cactus (there is also an option to have it delivered). Close to Casa Cactus there are also local shops with food, honey, souvenirs. Wifi signal was strong and available everywhere (not only in rooms). Jay and Sebastian are fantastic hosts. They took care of us so well. I felt like at home :) I truly recommend Casa Cactus Buenavista and will definitely go back when I am in Mexico again.

We loved exploring the area then returning to the comfort of our luxurious cabanas. The hospitality of our hosts knows no bounds. Within hours we felt like family. Verified reviewThis place is PERFECT!!! If you are looking for a nice quiet getaway, this is the place! The rooms were spotless, the grounds were beautiful, and the staff was extremely friendly! I've been coming to the the bacalar area for the past 5 years, and this is by far the best place I've stayed. The quality of the rooms and other amenities like the pool are perfectly hidden in a very authentic Mexican Pueblo.
It is a perfect place for a quiet retreat from the normal tourist spots but It is necessary to have a car because it is too far away from bacalar without one. However, if you have a car, the distance is not a problem at all. 20 minutes down the road and all the great restaurants are at your fingertips. But without having to suffer through any of the noise and nightlife! This place is wonderful!
