Read more– opens a dialog boxEach review score is between 1 and 10. To get the overall score you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of them. We use a weighted review system, which means the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. Guests can also give separate “subscores” in crucial areas like location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value, and free Wifi. Note that guests submit their subscores and overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an accommodation that you booked through our platform if you stayed there, or if you got to the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialize in detecting fake reviews submitted to our platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team so that our fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we'd publish every review we get, positive and negative. However, we won’t display any reviews that include or refer to (among other things):
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out. We may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old, or if the accommodation has a change of ownership.
An accommodation can reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (e.g. language, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). You can sort and/or filter them by time of year, review score, and more.
Sometimes we show external review scores from other well-known travel websites, but make it clear when we do this.
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly, without limiting expression or strong opinions. They're also applicable regardless of the comment's tone.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include hate speech, discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, or the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and other similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties, and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options might be available (by type of traveler, by score, etc...).

CanadaWe chose the room with the terrace which makes it sound nicer than it is - which was just a roof. This could have been set up with some seating, umbrella, plants etc as it did overlook the lively street and cathedral. As it was, we never used it.
Loved the location - the best! The staff were very helpful as well

United StatesThe bathroom is very small and has a sliding door which is not sound proof and there is no ventilation in the bathroom.
The host, Rosario and her staff, were very friendly and so welcoming. They went above and beyond to ensure we were comfortable and felt at home. They offer a basic breakfast with drinks and fresh fruit everyday. They welcome everyone with mezcal and a gift and even surprised us with a cake since we were celebrating a birthday. Truly exceptional hospitality (thank you so much!). The facilities are clean and in good condition. The rooms are equipped with plenty of mirrors, water, have lots of natural light and the room we stayed at felt very private since it was on the second floor next to the terrace. There was good water pressure and temperature in the shower. Beds are comfy and the AC works great.

I wouldn’t consider staying anywhere else in Oaxaca, thanks to the thoughtful hospitality of Casa Esmeralda’s owner, Rosario, and her kind, efficient staff. The 8 room hacienda-like hotel is bright, welcoming, colorful, clean, comfortable (with modern features, including air conditioning), safe (surveillance cameras and doorman restricted access), and is a 5-10 minute walk to Templo de Santo Domingo, Centro Cultural, Jardin Botanico, Centro Gastronomico, galleries, museums, mercados, and the Zocalo. Our large room on the top floor gave us full access to the terrace to enjoy coffee, workout, and a fortunate birds eye view of festive parades during the week long Guelaguetza celebration. Rosario (a former chef) recommended otherworldly restaurants, connected us to a well informed taxi driver (Hugo) who gave as history/anthropology lectures on our early morning drive to Monte Alban, and since his son is a muralist, art history perspectives and street art walk suggestions. Rosario’s kind thoughtfulness will remain an enduring memory of this trip. Although physically handicapped, she asked her husband to purchase an analgesic balm when my sister fell (old knee injury), and hours after Rosario departed for the evening, she returned at 9pm with a birthday gift for my sister (lovely traditional embroidered blouse and earrings). Rosario’s interactions with us were not business transactions, but rather, humorous, warm, considerate conversations reserved for family members. We can’t wait to return, and highly recommend Casa Esmeralda

United StatesThe best thing about Casa Esmeralda is the proprietor, Rosaria! She is super friendly, makes great recommendations for food in the area, and made us feel at home from the minute we arrived. Casa Esmeralda was also exceptionally clean, our room had a lot of privacy (felt more like an apartment on the second floor), and the rooftop was wonderful for enjoying the cool evenings and view.

United StatesNo kitchen for breakfast but I preferred to have a coffee in room then visit one of the coffee shops or restaurants steps away.
Absolute best location in Oaxaca. Steps away from all the top restaurants, art galleries, mezcalerias, and sites. Outstanding warm, friendly, and knowledgeable staff. The owner, Rosario, is typically there during the day to assist with any traveler needs. Room was clean and modern. Bed is comfortable. Bathroom is new, sleek, and had walk in shower. Very tall ceilings with high windows so room has lots of natural light. Coffee maker in room came in handy. A/C worked great. Nice inner courtyard with secure front entrance. Courtyard has huge retractable sun roof to keep temp comfortable. Rooftop patio with view of Santo Domingo Guzman church and Auditorio Guelaguetza.

United StatesThe lady administering the property made us feel like she was making us a favor by either checking in earlier and leaving our suitcases longer. Certainly my sister and I were very grateful she let us do both, but this lady made us feel uncomfortable.
Location is great! Everything walking distance.

United StatesNo mini fridge in room. It would be lovely to have a place to keep waters, cold drinks, leftover fruits, etc.
Fantastic location, right near the Santa Domingo cathedral. Easy to walk everywhere. The owner is very attentive, makes you feel like family. She even allowed us to place pictures of our late family members on her alter, (ofrenda), for Dia de los Muertos ☺

SwitzerlandOnly negative experience: leaving the hotel as the vacation was over. Thank you for everything!
We have liked everything about this stay - the hotel is perfectly located in the city of Oaxaca for exploring the city, for eating out, for going to the markets (there is an artisanal market just around the corner) and also for leaving for tours in the surroundings. The hotel itself is a charming historical townhouse with a beautiful interior court where you can spend plenty of your time. For breakfast we have been provided with fresh fruits every day. The owner and the employees really care about the well-being of their guests (there are only six rooms) and help wherever they can - e.g. making reservations, giving tips for exploration or even calling some places in Mexico City for us. We extended our stay by one night as we liked the hotel and the city so much and would absolutely recommend it to you!

CanadaNothing. We were very satisfied.
The location was a 5 minute walk from the most beautiful church in Oaxaca City, Santo Domingo de Guzman, and surrounded by restaurants and shops, so Casa Esmeralda was ideally placed. Senora Rosario was absolutely charming, and very helpful to those of us who didn’t speak Spanish.

United StatesThe noise from the lobby traveled easily, although, fortunately, the noise from the outside was not bad.
Excellent location. We walked everywhere except to and from the airport. Very close to wonderful restaurants and sights. Loved the tile floors, the size of our room (room #1), the size of the 2 beds, the cheery and colorful decor, the wonderful staff. The owner, Rosario, was very helpful and fun to talk to. Her English was quite good.

Rosario, the owner, made us feel like welcome friends from the moment we arrived - where we were greeted with a shot of mezcal! She provided us with lots of helpful recommendations and she and her whole team were so kind and accommodating throughout our stay. The hotel is right in the middle of Oaxhaca and is the perfect base for exploring the city. It is also exceptionally clean, comfortable and spacious - much nicer than it looks in the pictures! We couldn't have asked for more.

CanadaWe were first in the room facing the street but the noise of the bars around until late was very disruptive for sleeping. We were kindly moved to a back room which was much quieter. Our room did not have any windows or natural light however and opened onto an indoor courtyard. The showers in this room did not have good pressure or ventilation
The host was a wonderful lady, attentive and available . She helped us book a taxi for the day and gave restaurant suggestions. Her English was very functional. The beds and linens were top notch and the wardrobes were fantastic and a good design. The location was excellent and central. The roof had a great view of San Domingo and was a quiet place to unwind outside when back at the hotel. The hotel is quite newly renovated with good design.
