How guest reviews work
Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We use a weighted review system which means that the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
- Politically sensitive comments
- Promotional content
- Illegal activities
- Personal or sensitive information (e.g. emails, phone numbers or credit card info)
- Swear words, sexual references, hate speech, discriminatory remarks, threats, or references to violence
- Spam and fake content
- Animal cruelty
- Impersonation (e.g. if the writer is claiming to be someone else)
- Any violation of our review guidelines.
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
Guidelines and standards for Reviews
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options may be available (by type of traveller, by score, etc.).

Verified reviewAs a solo traveler they took the time to orientate me to the city. They gave me lot of tips and advice. It was within a nice walking distance to the things I wanted to see. Coco (the dog)was such a welcoming ambassador.

Hola Fabian. Unfortunately during your stay we experienced a water leak from a recently opened new room that affected below room. On your first day it took some time for breakfast but on your departure date it was served in less than 15 minutes.

Verified reviewThe hostel is a short walk from the bus station, about a 5 minute walk. I heard from another guest that the breakfast was luxurious - a fruit bowl with waffles, unfortunately I was on two full days tours that started before breakfast, so I didn't have the chance to try it, maybe it would be nice to have them a little earlier. You will be greeted at the hostel by a very friendly little dog Coco, she was amazing. For these I would reccomend it still but they should fixed few things.
I'm sorry, but my stay didn't start off the best. First of all, I informed the hostel about my night arrival in advance, at 9 o'clock, still an hour before the end of check out, to my surprise it was closed, I would have appreciated the bell, I had to wait about 20 minutes and sit outside the door after a full day of bus travel, even knocking on the glass door didn't help, nor did a message to the hostel, when Coco barking at the door saved me, to my surprise, after opening the door, the lady who didn't speak much English looked quite annoyed and didn't apologize at all when I told her how long I had been waiting. In the end, she didn't even have change to return after paying for the stay, which I haven't seen yet.It doesn't matter anymore, the most unpleasant surprise for me was the door to the room, which was broken and jammed so much that it was impossible to get in or out of the room, you had to use your whole body weight and fight with it. When I got stuck outside, even the receptionist couldn't do it and we had to get help from a guy. That was all night, because my roommates came in at different times and couldn't get in and knocked on doors, and trying to open it was exhausting and many times beyond our efforts - they finally fixed it the next day, but thanks to that I didn't sleep one night because of trying to help others get into our room. The entrance to the hostel in the evening is via a pin code, unfortunately I entered the wrong code once and due to how sensitive the lock was to touch so that the numbers lit up at the same time and you knew what you were entering - when the screen in the middle of the display has to be unlocked before the pin, when as soon as I pressed the lock it wouldn't let me enter the pin and reported the wrong code and after about three attempts it blocked the system so I couldn't get into the hostel and had to knock on the window from other room.
Hola Katerina. Thank you for the nice comments about Coco, she is a lovely pet. We feel bad for your experience at the hostel: staying outside for 20 minutes should have not happened and we understand your feelings. We have installed a door bell. The lady that opened the door is Ale a collaborator we appreciate that is learning English; probably it would have been a good idea to be patient since you are travelling in a Spanish speaking country, and part of the experience is having language interactions with local people. The management speaks fluent English but we don't require that skill to our employees. The dorm room getting jammed was very very disturbing and we apologize; as you mentioned soon we fixed it . Not much to say about the door code experience, you made the necessary process to block a system that up to date every one operates without issues. Finally we would like to thank Ale waking very late at night up to open the door for you.

The room smelled like mold and rotten wood, and does not have any windows or ventilation, and it's full of moskitos. They don't change the sheets. The mattress was very old and the metal springs hurt your body. The near by streets get very flooded even with the slightest rain, U will wet your shoes on dirty sewage water. Looks like nearby sewage it's not working at all. An employee accused me of causing the "hostel smell", and asked me if "I was talking medications". (She heard me earlier talking over the phone, about transporting medications, which i didn't carry with me.) Pretty low move of them. The receptionist is quite rude and I'm sure they were looking through my bags when I wasn't there. The place is dirty and dusty. They provide plastic glasses to drink water, but those are dirty as well.
Hola Alexa. Being as assertive as we can we'll just focus on addressing false statements 1.- Dorm smell is perception and perception is reality 2.- You stayed 1 night in the mix dorm that does has a window and there was no need to change sheets. Anyhow sheets are changed every checkout, on long stays every week or per guest request 3.- Mattress are very well qualified, just read other reviews 4.- Streets flooded (in the entire city) was due to a huge storm, hostel has nothing to do with it 5- Merida does not has sewage system, every house of business is obligated to use bio-digestors. Rain water is sent to water table thus impossible to have "dirty sewage water" 6.- Nobody accused you of nothing, staff was trying to make conversation about the herbs you brought 7- Staff does not touch guests belongings and Hostel provides lockers and locks to avoid statements like: "I'm sure they were looking through my bags when I wasn't there." 8.- Hostel is moped and cleaned on daily basis, bathrooms 3 times a day 9.- For security reasons we don´t provide crystal glasses. Guests are asked to clean their glasses after using them, anyhow if left aside staff will pick them up and clean them. We wish you the best of lucks finding another stay option if you come back to Merida

Verified reviewGuaya Hostel has all the amenities necessary for a very pleasant stay. Its location places all the main city features within easy walking distance and the ADO bus station is only 300 metres away. Breakfast is included and provides a good start to the day, except for the Bimbo bread. The staff are very helpful and always around
Guaya is a good all-round hostel.
Hello. We are thrilled that you had a good stay experience in Guaya. We look forward receiving you on your next Merida visit

Verified reviewWe loved the awesome breakfast that was included in our price and the help and care of the staff and owners of the accomodation. We did lack hot water two of the 7 days but they ran out of propane and that happens to us at our own house as well. It was not a problem as the cold water wasn't really "cold".. We enjoyed meeting other guests at the breakfast table, getting ideas of places to visit, had great help finding Uber to the airport at an amazingly low cost which allowed us to make a really strong tip (propina) and in perfect time. All in all, it was a great stay in Merida!
Can't think of anything that would have made it better except hot shower the two mornings that we lacked. They were very quick to remedy the situation. What good people, doing their best to make affordable and good accomodations for people who are traveling... They are working to improve the hostal every day and it's working!
Hola Jennifer. We enjoyed the your stay. It was a pleasure meeting you and having time to chat. We look forward seeing you next time you visit Merida

Verified reviewStaff were exceptionally friendly and kind. A good collection of other travellers were there too. It was near the bus station which is perfect for day trips or for early departures/late arrivals. I chose the location because I was taking Spanish lessons downtown and wanted to start each day with a nice walk.
