A very great stay. Staff was friendly and helped if we had any questions. The room and kitchen were clean and the bed was comfortable. Not too noisy and only a 10-minutes walk to the beach.

Great location! Right in between the beach and the monkey sanctuary.

Not a lot of available information about activities in the area, I had to look it up on my own.

The hotel/hostel is situated in AKUMAL village, therefore you will have to walk along the overbridge in order to reach the beach (for which there is an entry fee). The walk to the beach is about fifteen minutes. The hotel has wonderful private rooms and a spacious dorm with very comfortable beds. The kitchen is big and well equipped and is kept spotless by the lovely staff. There is also a big sitting room where you can watch TV or just relax. Lara, the owner, is delightful and the rest of the staff are very friendly and helpful. I really felt at home and even decided to extend my stay.

    Property response:

Dear Lorella, we enjoyed so much having you stay with us. You are a delight and I loved having you around. I am glad you enjoyed your stay and I hope that maybe one day our paths cross again ;)

I've stayed in dozens of hostels in North America and Australia - Itza is one of the best hostels I've ever stayed in. The owner is welcoming, friendly and helpful. The kitchen is big and well equipped with gas stove (all burners work!), an oven, a toaster a large refrigerator, plenty of pots, pans and eating utensils - and they serve delicious pancakes every morning for breakfast - BRAVO! The dorm room has comfortable beds, air conditioning that always worked (you need it!) and plenty of storage for your luggage. The bathroom is unisex, was clean and had spacious showers with plenty of hot water. The pool on the roof is small but clean - a nice break from the Mexican heat. The Hostel is in the Pueblo of Akumal. There is an excellent Fruiteria 3 blocks into the town (I'm gonna miss those Mangoes!) The Pollo Asado vendor on the main road 3 blocks into town is excellent - he does NOT overcook the chicken! - A tasty lunch for 50 pesos.

The hostel is in the Pueblo of Akumal a long walk from the beach across the highway. Too far to carry my paddleboard. Beach access in Akumal is TERRIBLE on foot - blocked off by private property - BOOO! Akumal, like every other town I've been in in Mexico is VERY NOISY - motorcycles racing up and down the roads (super noisy - I don't think they have mufflers!), trucks rumbling down the road, dogs barking, people shouting, etc....You can even hear noise on the top deck. And be careful crossing the street! And typical of so many areas I've visited in Mexico, LOTS of trash strewn about. Trash and garbage are deposited in bags on the street just outside the hostel and the dogs rip the bags open and spread the garbage around - they also do their business on the sidewalk and street near the trash deposit - I just about stepped in it when I first arrived - YUCK!

    Property response:

Harry! Thank you for the detailed feedback! I am glad you enjoyed your stay with us! Come back next year! we will still be here, and so will the mangos!! ;)

It felt like an Island, Tower, or Fortress amidst a not-so-comfortable yet probably quite regular and normal environment. I loved the ho(s)tel, its staff, and their service. I wouldn't hesitate to return. I walked to all the great beaches and snorkeling places in Akumal. If you can walk, you will be able to as well.

Just surroundings, the whole pueblo could be a little more developed.

The Itza is a fantastic budget-friendly option for travelers visiting Akumal. We were really happy with our stay. The rooms are spacious, clean, and well-equipped, with a comfortable double bed, a bunk bed, and a private bathroom – everything we needed. The location is great too! It's an easy walk 15-20 min walk to Akumal Bay, where we had an amazing time swimming with turtles (definitely get there early before the crowds!)! Back at the hotel, the rooftop pool was a huge bonus, and catching the sunrise from up there was absolutely worth waking up early for. The staff were also incredibly lovely and friendly, making our stay even more enjoyable.

Just a heads-up: getting to the beach involves crossing a busy road; the footbridge and flyover can be a bit daunting, especially after a few tequilas! And although I love dogs they were pretty vocal at night!

Breakfast (just pancakes) and shower gel provided. Rooftop pool and communal area. Very close to shops and restaurants, walking distance to the beach. There was an outdoor washing line to hang up your damp things to dry.

Towels weren’t provided, but you could rent them

We were very pleasantly surprised by this hotel/hostel. We slept in the dorm room, the beds were very comfortably with a nightstand and locker for our backpacks. There were pancakes for breakfast and a big kitchen with a fridge to store your things. The roof top pool was also quite nice. Over all we really enjoyed our stay and would come back any time.

One of few places to stay in the town part of akumal. good location, friendly staff, nice pancakes and coffee in the morning, comfortable rooms with good showers. Roof top area is pretty nice, with a clean pool and lot of space to hang out. More of a hostel vibe than hotel, so every chance to be social if you want.

Nothing really. The water was off a few times on separate days, but that seemed to be a city-problem, not hotel-problem.

The accommodation was average. However, on the entire Yucatán, beach access is charged. I don’t understand how the locals let the sea be stolen from them. The prices for access to the water are completely unreasonable. They are comparable to the entrance fee for a luxury water park, except that all you get is a dirty, overcrowded beach and dead coral. By the way, the coral is dead throughout Mexico, including Cozumel. Unfortunately, these destinations rely on old reviews. Overall, this is definitely not a backpacker destination, as you need to add the cost of beach access to the price of the hotel. As such, it’s just an average hotel in a Mexican village.

    Property response:

Thank you Martin for your feedback and for describing us for what we are: a small, local, family owned, small town hotel. We never advertised as anything else and are just trying to bring a friendly and family vibe to an area that has developped a lot in the past years. A development which we, as locals, have no control over. Just as we have no control over coral bleaching or public policies. We appreciate your concern for us and hope you support more local businesses in the future, by giving fair reviews, for example.
