How guest reviews work
Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We use a weighted review system which means that the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
- Politically sensitive comments
- Promotional content
- Illegal activities
- Personal or sensitive information (e.g. emails, phone numbers or credit card info)
- Swear words, sexual references, hate speech, discriminatory remarks, threats, or references to violence
- Spam and fake content
- Animal cruelty
- Impersonation (e.g. if the writer is claiming to be someone else)
- Any violation of our review guidelines.
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
Guidelines and standards for Reviews
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options may be available (by type of traveller, by score, etc.).

Verified reviewThe beds were comfy and had a nice little kitchen and huge sturdy bag lockers. The owner is very nice. I checked in late at night and he was there waiting for me and was very helpful and kind. He also let me store my bags there past checkout while I was exploring Mitla for the day. The volunteers working there were great as well. Located on a quiet well-lit street near street food, restaurants, and a Sorianna grocery store.
It was a few blocks from Centro but still very easy to get to and find.

Verified reviewOwner was really friendly and offered to help regularly, asking if we needed any information about the tours etc. If we had any issues we were able to message him or his volunteer. The bed was comfortable and we slept pretty well every night. Whilst there is some noise, it was pretty quiet compared to being in the centre. We stayed in a private room and these are in a separate building to the dorms which helps with noise too. Not having to use our own towels and soap was also really handy! The price is really good too!
Don’t like to leave negative feedback usually, especially as we really liked the guy, but hopefully the issues are sorted because it has potential to be a really good! The main issue we had was cleanliness. It felt pretty dirty (we saw the clean happen one day which only lasted about 10/15 mins) and it just needed a deep clean throughout, especially the bathroom which felt like it had only ever been mopped. Little things like the light switches and the mirror being really dirty are easy to fix. Hand towels in the bathroom and kitchen (plus a drying up towel for dishes) would be nice as we had to always use toilet roll or our cleaning towel to dry our hands. The shower also doesn’t always appear to work properly which was not ideal on the day we were leaving and had to wait for the water to work. Location isn’t too bad but it’s just worth noting you’ll have a 20 minute walk to and from the centre, which is more of a pain when you leave as you can’t order an Uber and will need to walk a while to flag down a yellow cab.

Verified reviewI stayed for more than a month in a spacious room with a private bath. The price was low and is the best that you can get in the Oaxaca area. The location is an easy ~20 min walk from the zocalo and is in a neighbourhood that in my opinion is closer to the real Mexican experience. There is a low-priced meat shop around the corner. Two of the best restaurants in Oaxaca (Hijo del Maiz and Criollo are ~5 mins walk away). It is also very close to the terminals from where buses go to different parts of Oaxaca and Mexico. The host is super friendly and during the course of my stay, I witnessed him taking time to provide relevant information and bending over backwards to cater to guest demands. Importantly, there is a significant water scarcity issue in Oaxaca, and the two properties operated by the business rely on a private water supply that is pumped frequently, which means you are least likely to face a multi-hour water outage if you stay here. There could be a few minutes gap between when the water runs out in the tank and when pump is turned on to refill the tank, but the owner is really diligent about water supply (both hot and cold) when prompted.

Verified reviewWe stayed in a private room which is an apartment that is across the street from the hostel. I didn't see the hostel. Our room was spacious.
There was no lock on the door; within the first 24 hours someone walked in on us twice!!! The kitchen was unequipped, there was a random dude that was always working with three computer screens at the table or sleeping on the couch in the shared space, our toilet was broken, the owner said he would turn the water on from 8-10 am but there was no water for showers.

Verified reviewOwner and Helper friendly! Bunk Beds are comfy, but very low. Water hot/could for free. Good coffee.
Not a nice inviting Hostel.Just to sleep.Kitchen is in the big Dorm. Never seen that before! 2 showers and 2 toilets in big Dorm. One didn't work. No warm water at one sink. No lightswitch inside small Dorm. Small space to sit.One sofa. The Hostel could be much better and nicer with a bit of work, details and colour. Moses we are in Mexico, put the beautiful colour of your country!
