How guest reviews work
Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We use a weighted review system which means that the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
- Politically sensitive comments
- Promotional content
- Illegal activities
- Personal or sensitive information (e.g. emails, phone numbers or credit card info)
- Swear words, sexual references, hate speech, discriminatory remarks, threats, or references to violence
- Spam and fake content
- Animal cruelty
- Impersonation (e.g. if the writer is claiming to be someone else)
- Any violation of our review guidelines.
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
Guidelines and standards for Reviews
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options may be available (by type of traveller, by score, etc.).

Verified reviewThe property had plenty of space to make you feel like you’re in nature away from everyone.
The long dirt road that leads to the property was about a 3 minute drive from the main road, takes a while getting in and out of there. If you plan on staying there, definitely rent a car or you’ll spend a lot on taxis
Thanks for your recommendation Ruby, it was great having you at Ecotucan!

Verified reviewSuper nice host, comfortable bedrooms, nicer than in the pictures. Really nice to stay in the middle of the jungle and very easy access to the lagoon. 10 min way from central bacalar (need to go by car).
Breakfast could be more diverse and with more healthy options specially for kids (eg no sugar yogurt).
Sofia, it was great having you and your family at Ecotucan, thank you for the comments that help improving our services.

Verified reviewBeautiful location in the forest with great gardens you can do a walking tour in. Very nice buildings and access to the lagoon. Good food in restaurant fairly priced.
Reception staff could have been more helpful with bags and getting a replacement fan. The fans in the room are not great so can get hot. Okay on April but I imagine very hot in the summer.
We appreciate your comments Karla. Thank you for staying with us at Ecotucan!

Verified reviewWe liked everything about this stay! I wish we had more than 1 night there. The villa is located in pictures place between green rainforest trees and it has all the amenities we needed. The bathroom was inside our villa and there were mosquito net on the bed, that we rally appreciated. We did not know that it did not have conditioning and glass windows (it has the mosquito net and wooden windows instead) but it was okay for our family and our little one (15 month old) in the bedroom we had big fan that was good for keeping comfortable temp. The only thing I would recommend for host is to get some glass jars for guests in the room, for visitors definitely have a big water bottle, you would need it for this trip anyway to stay hydrated.
Sergei, thanks for all your comments and recommendations, we loved having you and your family!

Verified reviewThis place is simply amazing: great spacious design villas in the jungle with amazing bathrooms and lovely patios. The restaurant food is great. The walking tour in the jungle was an unforgettable amazing experience. The pier on the lake is relaxing and peaceful and no boats are passing so very quiet.
I would consider having the bar / restaurant open for lunch too.

Verified reviewThe location was nice and sunrise we saw at the lagoon was amazing. The concept of the hotel was quite cool and we didn't have any windows so we constantly heard the sounds of nature (which was very very nice). The rooms were quite big.
I didn't like that the water that comes out of the shower and the taps was salty. My hair was very very dry after my stay and my skin was breaking out. Also, there was no WiFi in our room. In the room was no fridge, which I think is necessary with those hot temperatures. Limited breakfast options, especially for vegetarians. We ordered the omelette and on the menu it said that it comes with a variety of vegetables and cheese and ham inside. We told them that we don't want ham inside and as a result we didn't have anything inside of the omelette.
Juergen, thanks for taking the time to write about your stay at Ecotucan, we love the fact that you enjoyed the concept and nature. There is cold drinking water available 24hrs for our guests at the reception area. We apologize for your experience at breakfast. We do have plenty of vegetarian breakfast options for our guests, including the famous superfood chaya, maybe there was some misunderstanding due to language barrier? On our menu you find the options to choose from. The water of the Yucatan peninsula is very rich in minerals and therefore the slightly salty taste to it. Whenever it rains, we collect and use rainwater. Wifi can be temperamental, but the problem got solved.

Verified reviewWe loved our stay at Villas Ecotucan! The room was very spacious, clean and comfortable and the natural surroundings were beautiful. Perfect place to relax and disconnect (even on a very rainy day like the one of our stay). Dinner at the restaurant was a pleasant surprise, it was delish! Canoeing around the Bacalar lagoon was also a top experience; overall highly recommended!
We wish we had stayed longer!

Location is off town which make it harder to access restaurants and stores. It is a good walk to go to the Lagoon from the cabins.

Verified reviewPrivate access to the lagoon, free use of kayak equipment, the breakfast is good.
The options for dinner are limited and expensive. The water in the lavatory and shower tastes bad. The workers that fix the construction next to the lagoon are noisy.
