How guest reviews work
Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We use a weighted review system which means that the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
- Politically sensitive comments
- Promotional content
- Illegal activities
- Personal or sensitive information (e.g. emails, phone numbers or credit card info)
- Swear words, sexual references, hate speech, discriminatory remarks, threats, or references to violence
- Spam and fake content
- Animal cruelty
- Impersonation (e.g. if the writer is claiming to be someone else)
- Any violation of our review guidelines.
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
Guidelines and standards for Reviews
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.

Verified reviewTo me personally for the price it was very fair and a very good deal. The person running the place Irene was a fantastic host even got us a new night light as purs we broken. Very friendly and convenient spot to stay in if you are looking to go see Kek Lok Si, Penang Hill as the temple is just behind the stay and is very near to a bus stop which takes you into town.
The toilet honestly is very clean most of the time but the sitting toilet has very bad flushing pressure so might sometimes end up with a surprise gift before doing your business, as the stay is above a chinese kopitiam (coffee shop) the smell of raw pork will linger (not really a convenient smell) around but then again that is more of a preference thing. Other than that room was very very comfortable

Verified reviewGreat staff. Hospital levels of cleanliness. Hotel is above a coffee shop so free coffee with every stay. Don't try and go directly to the hotel to book. They don't have a reception.
No bed side light but it's not expected at this price.

everything was impressive until found out that one of the towels was an already used one with bad body odour! immediately contacted them through WhatsApp that this is a serious hygiene issue.

1 strong smell of pigs at stairs -feel like to vomit ! Downstairs selling fried pork 2 No own parking space available . Use public parking . park car very far away . 3 Price is not worth it considering the above 2 reasons .
HI! We are sorry you had not enjoyed the best time in your stay. Everything is written in our listing description (we've plenty of public car park in front of the guesthouse), parking is never a problem for guests who read the listing description and perhaps you did not read it due to your last minute reservation made on your trip - reservation made at 6pm and your arrival time is 7pm. Besides, there is no issue in the room in terms of the air circulation (so far none of our guests feedback with the issues), air freshers were provided in the rooms + common area. Sorry for not unable to satisfy your demand requirements such as 60 inch TV in the common area + free food in the mini bar. Please be understand we are budget guesthouse and we are not 5 stars hotel which is able to satisfy your luxury requirements. Thank you!

It's shared bathroom, it was not stated in facilities description. No simple amenities like bottle water or parking The towel provided will leave loose fiber and and bits on your body. The rooms are totally NOT soundproof but they stated otherwise. 3am rubbish truck noise 4am market people talking noise. Very noisy. For this price, there are many other better options
Hi Alvin, thanks for your comments. Pertaining to the shared bathroom comments - we indicated clearly in our listing description - "At the hostel, the rooms are equipped with a desk. All guest rooms feature a shared bathroom, a hairdryer and bed linen." and perhaps you overlooked the description🙏🏻. Besides, we also indicated the check in/check out hour in our listing as well - Check-in: 14:00 and Check-out: 11:00. Unfortunately you checked out 1 hour late during the departure date which has impacting our cleaning process for the next upcoming guests but we do not incur any extra charges to you (as a special favor). In regards to the noise during your stay (during Chinese New Year period), it is inevitable that you will face firecrackers and other uncontrollable noises. You may have to understand that Kek Lok Si Temple is located in a very lively place, so there will be many tourists and backpackers visiting during this period - fortunately we have not received any feedback from other guests about the noise issues - we believe most of our guests understand that. Lastly - about towels: we've reported the issue to our towel supplier to rectify this issue seriously (apologize!). Last but not least, we are providing quality facilities to our guests even though this guesthouse is a budget hostel (as it names -Bargainous): clean and IG Theme rooms, quality mattresses, duvets and linens, with all day long free Internet access. We offer affordable rates so EVERYONE CAN STAY 😇😇😇.

Verified reviewCheck in and check out SOP is good. The room is very clean and very comfortable, the location is strategic, inside very happening area. It is 3 minutes away from the Kek Lok Si Tempe’s cable car. In the morning, there are various foods nearby, walking distance to the famous laksa. Very recommended to those who want to visit Kek Lok Si Temple.
