How guest reviews work
Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We use a weighted review system which means that the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
- Politically sensitive comments
- Promotional content
- Illegal activities
- Personal or sensitive information (e.g. emails, phone numbers or credit card info)
- Swear words, sexual references, hate speech, discriminatory remarks, threats, or references to violence
- Spam and fake content
- Animal cruelty
- Impersonation (e.g. if the writer is claiming to be someone else)
- Any violation of our review guidelines.
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
Guidelines and standards for Reviews
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.

Wanette and Shawn are the best hosts and were super friendly and always available if we needed something. Security guards were always around and smiling. I would highly recommend this place and will go back there anytime.

Verified reviewLocation, Location, Location! The beach is just a few metres away, allowing you to jump into the Indian Ocean whenever you like without the hassles that occur once you are even just a few hundred metres away. It's ideal for children: a shallow entrance and smooth waves. Special thanks to Wanette and Shawn, the managers of the lodge. Everything was expertly managed plus their advice and support in booking activities in the area was invaluable. From snorkelling to see seahorses and hundreds of sea stars, to collecting pansy shells or doing a quad-bike tour into the area or going whale shark viewing. I can highly recommend venturing out. The chalets themselves are not new but well maintained. We bought fresh Portuguese rolls from the locals every morning and also amazing tiger prawns for the braai. They were very friendly and I recommend supporting them. Alternatively there are two restaurant options in walking distance just along the beach. Green Turtle is pricey/upmarket, but don't we all need some spoils during our vacation? Overall we had a great time in Barra!

Verified reviewThe location is fantastic - right on the beach. The accommodation had all the basic amenities. Felt safe with good security. We were able to meet our basic daily food needs such as bread (pao), fish and prawns through local traders visiting the lodge. Staff were always polite and friendly.
No internet connection because of a cyclone a few weeks earlier. Had to buy our own airtime. A portable fan in the living room would be great.

Verified reviewIt is a very nice and tranquil place. After some initial problems, we got a different apartment and all was great. Management was great in solving the problem, working hard and always good for a chat. You are directly on the beach , can go on snorkling tours, have a jump in the pool and so on. Afterwards a braai on the porch, great. Unfortunately the restaurant on the premesis was closed due to a fire, but an alternative, the Neptune, was just 50 meters up the beach (bring some time, Mozambiquan time).

The cottages need a lot of upgrading for the price you pay.
Thank you for taking the time to post a review. Very happy that you find the lodge's location a plus point, as well as our guards and Manageress - Wanette. Also noted your negative comment re cottage needing upgrades and particularly your low score for 'value for money'. During the Covid period all units were re-painted and some roofs (thatch) redone. Cupboards in the kitchens were upgraded, equipment (kettles, toasters, some stoves/aircons etc.) replaced. Lack of funds prevent more 'luxurious' upgrades, i.e. new upholstery on chairs, etc., but is done as budget allows. Our aim is to provide a 'home away from home', with as much comfort/facilities as income allow us to add to our houses, so that guests can wind down, relax and return home refreshed. We know there is always room for improvement and constantly pay attention to reviews/comments to offer the best facilities and comfort at a competitive rate. Value for money: Your rate was Mzn3594.46/night (2x persons), = Mzn1797.23/p/n which is +/- ZAR528.59/p/night (South African Rand). This INCLUDED, free breakfast, air-conditioned room, all taxes included AND, this was your 2nd booking with us, indicating that our rates must be reasonable and value for money if you booked with us TWICE!

Some of the equipment looks old, but you can expect it when the property is directly in front of the ocean!
