Parking is free everywhere but the hotel has no dedicated parking so you have to find a free place somewhere nearby and the distance can vary but we found a bay very close. The hotel is located on a busy junction by the canal side and a bridge which is pretty and a great place to people watch with a beer or coffee but can be a little noisy during the day but later it goes very quiet during the evening and at night it is totally silent so sleep is not disturbed. Rooms do not have hairdryer in them but one was available at anytime if no one else is using it from a wardrobe on the landing outside the rooms. We would have preferred one in the room but only a minor issue really and not a deal braker. We stayed with two motorbikes and parked them on a bay behind the hotel in the open. We would never normally park them outside like this and out of sight where they could be stolen but no harm came to them and on this occasion and we felt they were very safe in this little town but when it rained overnight they got wet and we would have preferred under cover and dedicated parking somewhere at the hotel or nearby.

A lovely hotel, cafe, restaurant and bar with inside and outside seating alongside the canal in an idyllic Friesland small town amongst quintessential Dutch people and life. Perfect location for exploring Friesland with only short travel distances between 20 minutes and 1 hour to everywhere. Good shops and supermarkets all easy walking distance and canal side bars and restaurants and historic buildings. Easy access for walkers and cyclists to miles of scenic cycle and walking routes amongst canals and wildlife. Population and staff all speak English to a high level and just could not be more friendly and helpful. We will visit Balk again and we will book rooms here again. The building is old but we liked it as it is maintained to very high standard and has so many traditional features and style with lots of lovely wood fittings and furnishings and a lovely atmosphere. The hotel has a good and extensive food menu all day long from snacks to full meals. The hotel allowe us to add all drinks and meals to our room bill which we did not have to pay until departure and they take cards or cash. We highly recommend a visit to eat at The Golden River Chinese restaurant and something that should not be missed it is 5* Rooms have multi channel TV. The rooms have good basic but functional and clean showers and bathrooms with good quality complimentary shower gel, soap, shampoo, towels and face cloths. We found all prices on a rough par with UK and good value for money.

Due to the town centre location, there is no car park, but on-street parking is available nearby, so it's not too much of a problem.

The twin room was clean and well equipped, with tea, coffee and a kettle. The standout feature was the superb restaurant. Good quality food, perfectly cooked and well presented, with great service from the staff.

I love this little place and the reason I return year after year. Great location right on the canal with outdoor seating for drinks snacks and meals. The restaurant and bar is very traditional and quaint, serving best drinks and food for miles. This is a family run establishment - all the staff are very warm and friendly.

The waitress of the restaurant didn't know English. I ordered something, She brought something else, which was also double the price. So that was a disappointment

Quiet rooms at back of an amazing restaurant. Fantastic fresh breakfast. Very clean and comfortable (not new furnishings if thats what you need), good showers, dark curtains, tea and coffee in room. Lovely team. Super value for money.
