How guest reviews work
Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We use a weighted review system which means that the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
- Politically sensitive comments
- Promotional content
- Illegal activities
- Personal or sensitive information (e.g. emails, phone numbers or credit card info)
- Swear words, sexual references, hate speech, discriminatory remarks, threats, or references to violence
- Spam and fake content
- Animal cruelty
- Impersonation (e.g. if the writer is claiming to be someone else)
- Any violation of our review guidelines.
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
Guidelines and standards for Reviews
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.

Verified reviewI extended my stay to 3 nights, when Ngarie popped in to collect payment. Loved how the Chalet is tucked away in the most perfect place.(the rock path is tricky-sensible shoes a must...says she who wore heels) I sat for hours listening to the theraputic rhythm of water, dancing down a stoney bed of rocks n boulders. I requested some wood (managed to stretch it over 2 nights, bonus!!!) for the brazier. It was magical to sit & hear both the brook babbling along & the fire crackling. I fully recommend Chalet Karaka. pg♡2025

Verified reviewCleverly renovated into a charming and private chalet with a very comfy bed. Great wee bathroom and lovely hearing the stream nearby.
Only downside was there was no hot water our second night.
Our apologies about the hot water. We have a gas califont system with 2 bottles, so this shouldn't happen again.

The cooking facilities, no microwave and a less than ideal oven.
Hi John, our cooking facilities are a mini oven, a double hotplate and BBQ. We have a microwave available on request as can be seen in the photos and description.

Verified reviewSuch a unique property to stay at right beside the river in the trees. Very private, we had the river all to ourselves. The shower and bathroom have giant windows looking into the garden which is quite spectacular. Bathrobes were handy as you need to go outside to get between the bedroom and bathroom. The coffee machine was a bonus and the bed was very comfortable. We will definitely stay here again.
Didn't realise there was no milk provided, but a quick trip to the supermarket sorted that.

Verified reviewThe property was rundown, rodents in the wall lining, garden completely overgrown with noxious weed(wandering Jew). The bed and linen and pillows need replacing. The drains are clogged so not running properly. We would not recommend
Tradescantia found near Golden Bays rivers can be irritating to dogs (if you let them wander), while harmless to people and certainly not in the immediate surround of the chalet. We have a had a plumber in and upgraded our facilities. Thank you so much for your feedback.

We did not get the room that we had booked. The 2 towels provided were very small, thin and not adequate for a 2 night stay. The microwave was unusable.
Kia ora, thanks for staying with us. You booked the Rameka Studio which is the one you stayed in. The microwave works perfectly, it needs to be plugged in to be used. Spare towels are in the drawers in the bedroom.

The description of the place, including the photos, were of another unit. Our unit was right off the road, every car that went by we could hear. Also, the WiFi was useless - not enough signal even for the cell phone to use. We would have been better at a campsite. Ended up leaving one night early. Also, owner was not at the site and was unavailable for communication via phone. Their description of checkout wasn’t accurate (door wouldn’t lock properly). I would not recommend this place.
Sorry for the confusion with your room. When we listed the second chalet, we did not know the photos would be mixed up and it would be so hard for you to tell which room you were booking. The streamview cabin photos are available to see when you click on the room you are booking. This cabin is no longer availble through this booking avenue to avoid future confusion. We are available for communication during your stay.

Verified reviewIt is a delightful little chalet, with everything we needed. The tinkling of the stream was rather special. The shower was the best I have encountered; the superb enclosure; the water pressure; the high-end shampoos and the exposure to the bush outside! Wow!
