How guest reviews work
Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We use a weighted review system which means that the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
- Politically sensitive comments
- Promotional content
- Illegal activities
- Personal or sensitive information (e.g. emails, phone numbers or credit card info)
- Swear words, sexual references, hate speech, discriminatory remarks, threats, or references to violence
- Spam and fake content
- Animal cruelty
- Impersonation (e.g. if the writer is claiming to be someone else)
- Any violation of our review guidelines.
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
Guidelines and standards for Reviews
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options may be available (by type of traveller, by score, etc.).

Verified reviewThe highlight was Liz herself. I would very happily return here next time I'm in the Hawkes Bay area. The house is very tidy. I really enjoyed waking up to beautiful birdsongs each morning. I also enjoyed having access to a full kitchen, bathroom, and loungeroom that you wouldn't get with a hotel stay. If I wanted to roast a leg of lamb, I'd have the facilities and have been welcome to do so.
Thank you Garth. it was lovely to have you in my home. The next marathon for next year is already planned. So hope to see you.

Verified reviewThe location was good to all locations we went.
Perhaps not to have too much personal stuff in the room. I know they are family memories but not keen looking at stranger photos in the bedroom.
This is my home, not a hotel. So I will have personal items in my home. You actually stayed twice so it can't be too bad.

My own fault I didn't read the report properly. There was no chair in the bedroom. Therefore no where to sit. And no Tv. As I said these are things I would have liked but the place was as advertised, my mistake
Thanks, Owen. Loved having you and your wife to stay. Yes, no TV and chair, as you mentioned, quite right, not advertised on my site. But then you have a lovely bed and comfy cushions to lean on.

The breakfast was a bit sparse no offer to watch the request to remove our shoes was fair enough but no seats were provided at one stage l had to sit on the floor to put my shoes on
I offered 3 cereals. muffins. toast both white and grain and two yogurts. A fruit bowl. 6 spreads. Tea and coffee. There were chairs available to sit down and take off shoes. This is a standard continental breakfast. I think the expected the guest a cook breakfast but quoted on my site it was a continental breakfast down to detail on what I offered on this.

Verified reviewVery quiet locale
Not so clean (e.g.mirror in bathroom, toothpaste on vanity)
Cleanliness was of the highest standard. A wee bit of toothpaste was left. You managed to go thru my cupboards and jam them up. Also, disobeyed rules in the house. Have reported guests on misbehavior.

Verified reviewFriendly welcome, the lovely room, the facicilities, the lovely breakfast.
We discovered fully hosted and sharing of hosts lounge etc is not for us.
It was lovely to have you both in my home. The description of bed and breakfast did say sharing home with host and facilities. The great advantage of staying with a host is the knowledge of the area, places to visit and generosity of the host with doggies bag of produce to take away and a free glass of wine of the Hawkes Bay region. Wouldn't you agree.

Verified reviewThe room was clean and the en-suite bathroom was nice.
The accommodation listing included many facilities which were not available to us. Guests have no access to the kitchen facilities or living area or anything other than a bedroom with en-suite bathroom. The listing is totally misleading. This property offers a bed and breakfast only, with no other facilities. My wife and I left and found an alternative accommodation. Subsequently we got a refund from booking.com.
I didn't set up as a motel. From the outset, you want to occupy my whole house. 260 square feet. Description states bed and breakfast only. Booking.com has set facilities that on my end are not correct. I tried to comprise with guests. guests said they were fine and would go out for dinner. Guests wanted to use my lounge. However, the room they stayed in is huge. don't know why you are reviewing my property when you didn't stay and you have a refund. Extremely hard when 6 years in bed and breakfast had a guest walk out. However, you stayed a time before leaving.Booking.com didn't ring me about this. pay Commission, and yet hosts are not correctly serviced. could have been avoided. I don't know why even booking.com let guests review when they accommodated you, or elsewhere seems unfair.

Verified reviewVery quiet. Nice breakfast . Great shower Liz not intrusive
Bed small . No radio in bedroom Did not feel comfortable making cup of tea after 9pm in kitchen Bit restrictive
Sorry about the restrictions, but policies stated curfew hours and quiet times. These were sadly ignored and were reminded of messages when booked back in October. Guest came into the kitchen about 10.30pm and put lights on well after quiet hours.

Verified reviewSpacious bathroom and comfortable bed.
Lots of private items in the bedroom making it a bit weird. Pretty basic breakfast but was ok.
I offered a breakfast of local produce. Fruits, 7 spreads, cereals two lots and included local honey and figs. Fruit mince pies. As for personal items, it was travel photos and travel books. And a few family photos. You are in a person's home. I went out of the way to offer wine and reserved a table at the local restaurant.

Verified reviewLiz was such a great host, welcomed me into her beautiful home with a smile. Always made sure I had what I needed and I was warm and was always down for a good yarn! Felt very safe in her space and the breakfast was just what I needed in the morning. Space was spotless, couldn’t even feel how cold it really was. Frimley is also such a beautiful neighbourhood. 10/10 recommend, will definitely be looking up Liz again when heading back to Hastings
Thank you. What a lovely guest to have in my home. A wonderful human being, qualities of understanding individual, who will make a tremendous teacher. It was such a pleasure to have you in my home.

Verified reviewShared kitchen and shared place which was not mentioned in booking .com. 9pm to 7 am – there is a curfew imposed we were not allowed to go to the kitchen to get even water, we had been asked to get water from the toilet during this time. Rude and threatening behaviour which left me shaken on my competition day. Furthermore, the booking stated a Buffet/continental breakfast. Sunday morning, when we were leaving at 9am – All that we saw placed in the kitchen was 1 piece of Kiwifruit. No bread, no milk in the fridge or peanut butter jam. This was a very bad experience and we would like you to investigate and we should be refunded the booking amount in Full.
Dear Booking.com What a horrifying experience we had at Liz at Lowery place. I booked the accommodation in Hastings as I had a sports competition there. Based on the listing, we arrived at 6pm excited for my event the next day. The First impression was weird when Liz explained that we had a room with attached bathroom and everything else was shared The description on the booking does not at all mention that this was a shared situation. We explained our schedule that 8pm I had to attend a briefing and tanning for the bodybuilding competition to be held the following day. We left at 8pm and after the tanning at around 9pm, we bought dinner and come back to Liz. We sat done on the bar stool by the Island in the kitchen to have our dinner. We obviously switched the light and were not even speaking to each other when Liz stomped out of her bedroom and started scolding us that after 9pm to 7am – there is a curfew imposed and we have to remain in our rooms only and the kitchen should not be entered. She said that she is a support worker and works shifts and cannot sleep if the kitchen light is switched on and any light in the house is switched on. We must remain in our rooms – I explained that we do not have the habit of eating in our room on the bed – we always ate in the dining or lounge or kitchen – I promised to be quiet and quick. But this further infuriated Liz and she kept abusing us until we left the kitchen and went into the bedroom. Nothing was mentioned on booking.com that it will be shared kitchen or shared place. There was no Tv, bedroom was cramped and only enough for bed and a work table and office chair. We were promised continental breakfast for us as mentioned when we book the place. Liz sent the policy of her house once we paid the amount. We were aware of quite time so Friday night after my comp prep came home at 9.30 quietly turn on kitchen light to have dinner. Liz came and started scolding that we void the police and we kept asking about our mistake.
You abused me. These curfews are written on booking.com and quiet hours. I wasn't abusive but being assertive. I asked you about breakfast, but you didn't want it. Als, I've had put complaints as you are both unreasonable to booking.com. You also left stained linen and a pillow case. With no note and explanation. I've had no other people been unreasonable about it. There is an equiette with hosts and bed and breakfast.
