How guest reviews work
Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We use a weighted review system which means that the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
- Politically sensitive comments
- Promotional content
- Illegal activities
- Personal or sensitive information (e.g. emails, phone numbers or credit card info)
- Swear words, sexual references, hate speech, discriminatory remarks, threats, or references to violence
- Spam and fake content
- Animal cruelty
- Impersonation (e.g. if the writer is claiming to be someone else)
- Any violation of our review guidelines.
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
Guidelines and standards for Reviews
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.

Verified reviewThe flat is clean and beds àre comfy. Angela is helpful too. However, the bathroom is a bit uncomfortable, with both bedrooms having access to it as we are staying with a couple friends. We didn't get into the beach as the private access is closed. The photos are misleading as you can only enjoy the beach view through the host's main house. But generally, we had a great stay.
Glad you had a great stay. There must have been a misunderstanding about the track as we have 2 entrances, and I had said one was closed due to stock rotation. I had offered to show the other entrance. Both are on our private land of 10 acres. We state that the accommodation has a bush and garden view and show photos of the view from the apartment. We hoped you had received value for money, with us allowing a 5th person to stay even though we have a maximum of 4 and to allow you to host a BBQ gathering with your friends who were nonpaying guests. We enjoyed meeting you and the fun energy you bought. We appreciate your feedback.

Verified reviewA beautiful space overlooking the ocean. We were welcomed by the hosts, but then we had the space to ourselves to relax and enjoy. There is a community swimming spot within walking distance, and lots to explore in the area.

Verified reviewAngela, Lee and family were friendly and welcoming. The location is beautiful, the accommodation excellent. Comfortable and very clean with all the necessary appliances. Sunrise was magnificent. Angela also provided therapeutic massage for my wife at a very reasonable price. We are already planning our return for a longer stay to further explore this beautiful region. Lee suggested the Schapper Rock Restaurant in the local village which we would also highly recommend.
That we only stayed one night and had to leave.

Verified reviewLiterally everything!! The place, the location, the host, the amenities, the property, the privacy, the hiking trail to the water,… I can go on and on. This property is way more than meets the eye. I needed more time than only one night!! Hopefully I’ll make it back soon. And you can even get massage therapy for an extra fee while you’re there 🤯 I thought I was going to get there, chill out and then dive the next day. After meeting your host, you’ll be full of ideas of how to spend your time. I dropped my stuff, walked to the water, drove to the local beach and then hiked the Whale Bay trail to a secluded and safe spot by the water to watch the sunset. Wow 🥰
With room comfortably for 4 people in 2 bedrooms, I only wish I could have teleported my friends to share this piece of paradise with me. I sound like a commercial 😀

Very disappointed by the private cove. Was looking forward to swimming there but the path down was in desperate need of attention and the water in cove itself did not look inviting....covered with a weird film. Also just rocks and no sand. Do not recommend walking to it. Drive to Whale Bay. Beautiful.
Sorry you did not see the cove at its best. You arrived for 1 night just after a storm, the track does get a bit washed out when there has been heavy rain. It is a dirt walking track as stated and we do also state that it is a rocky bay. The film was due to the storm and yes would not have looked or felt pleasant. The cove is truly magical, and it is such a shame you did not get to see that. As mentioned by past guests, the cove has been one of the top highlights of many guests' trips. We appreciate your feedback and that you enjoyed the beautiful Whale Bay.

Verified reviewThe two bedroom self contained unit was tucked away in a pleasant, quiet location, attached to the owners property. It is a safe private area, among the hilltops and country lifestyle. 5 minute drive to the Tutukaka fishing wharf and a 20 minute drive to Whangarei. The home has everything you need, including a BBQ area and the sound of nature at your feet.
