A True Hidden Paradise – Unforgettable Stay at Akwaba Lodge

Absolutely nothing , everything was just PERFECT

I had the pleasure of spending four magical days at Akwaba Lodge in Bocas del Toro, and it was truly a dream come true! This place is a tropical paradise, perfect for anyone looking to relax, recharge, and reconnect with nature. From the moment I arrived, I felt completely at peace – surrounded by lush greenery, with the soothing sound of the waves in the background. It's the ideal spot for nature lovers and those who seek calm and serenity. What truly made the stay unforgettable were the incredible hosts, Mr. Jean and Natalie. They are warm, welcoming, and go above and beyond to make your stay special. Always ready with great advice, whether it's helping you plan excursions, suggesting excellent restaurants on nearby islands, or simply ensuring you're comfortable – they truly care about their guests. The food at the on-site restaurant is exceptional! Every dish is a delight – fresh, flavorful, and infused with a unique French touch that makes it absolutely delicious. Dining here was a daily highlight. Whether you're a couple looking for a romantic escape, a solo traveler, or a family with kids – this place has something for everyone. There are plenty of activities to enjoy together, and the whole property is thoughtfully designed to cater to relaxation and fun. I highly, highly recommend Akwaba Lodge to anyone looking for a unique and unforgettable holiday experience in Bocas del Toro. I can't wait to come back!

So peaceful and we used the kayaks to paddle to red frog Beach and hospital point and snorkeled along the way. We saw dolphins and sloths and monkeys. We took a tour to zapatilla islands with a water taxi guy. Had a great time!

The property is located on an island (isla Solaris) which is quite isolated from the rest - you always need a taxy boat to reach anything else. Some facilities are not really new But is a good compromise for the price.

Owners of the Lodge are very kind and help you with every need that you might have. They help calling you taxy boat and organizing tours. We decided to always have dinner at the lodge because the food is really good.

We rented the sailboat. We especially enjoyed the boat vibe, being close to the water for sunrise and sunset, the private dock with hammocks, watching the dolphins, the great snorkling experience right at our spot, the good cooking, the friendly hosts, the day travel to red frog beach with the canoes of the property. We throrougly enjoyed the tropical wilderness and being away from civilization.

It was a little bit isolated - we hadn’t realised that everywhere was a water taxi away (our bad)

We were made to feel very welcome by Jean Christian, Natali & family. We loved that it was a family affair. The food was excellent, and I personally enjoyed that dinners were a limited choice (freshness, avoiding waste etc), but others might not be so keen

We enjoyed our stay at Akwaba. The location is quiet and remote and we thought the food at the restaurant and the welcomng family that own the place were friendly. We personally struggled without airconditioning (which we obviously knew about prior to booking) as our room got super warm without much wind about. Make sure you pack your insect repellent too, as the midges/sandflies at dusk especially are brutal. We loved spending time in the hammocks down on the jetty and free use of stand-up paddle boards and kayaks was great. Recommend.

This is a quiet location, with fantastic, friendly hosts, who also cooked brilliantly. We went on tours daily, and used their canoes and paddle board to see the area close up. We saw a chocolate plantation, indigenous village, beautiful beaches, a sloth, red frogs, and dolphins, a Jesus Christ lizard, corals, starfish, countless fish and crabs.

First, the house we have got in my opinion was the best ( the size, the view, and the covered veranda ) Just few details will help to improve the stay: Some wall hooks, to hang clothes, hook by the door to hang the keys , and maybe some benches ( one in the bathroom!! ) to put our stuff. Regarding the breakfast, it was nice but skimpy, pot of coffee instead of one small cup please !! :) When I read about the house it was saying it has a kitchen and pats and plates, I was expecting also the usual rental house stuff ( some tea, sugar, salt etc ) but it was not there. I dont think it cost much the owners but it was inconvenient on first day. The place is great and hope this can help to the owners and new renters. I still could rent this again

The location was great, the landscaping was amazing, The food was REALLY tasty. Great cook. Complimentary breakfast was a plus ( but look what I did not like ) Natalie , the host was very helpful,

The food amazing, I had most of my meals there and they were all fresh and delicious. I loved the free kayaks, SUP boards and snorkeling equipment. It would be lovely to have a few loungers to lie in the sun although there were lovely hammocks in shaded spots.

Natalie and Jean-Christian were really lovely hosts in their little bit of paradise. If you are looking for peace, tranquility and nature this is a great place to stay and get away from it all - tiny hummingbirds, parrots, star fish and dolphins were bonuses. No beach but visit to red frog island had a wonderful sandy beach. Nathalie organised a tour to other islands which I would highly recommend. Sadly too rough for paddle boarding while we were there but I can imagine this would be amazing on a calm day. And finally - The suppers were delicious!

We stayed in one of the new chalets made completely of wood which face out to the sea. Was great to enjoy a nice glass of wine or two and just listen to the sounds of nature all around you. Be aware you do need mosquito spray here. Natali (host) together with her husband and sons were fantastic hosts. Super friendly. The on site restaurant made some lovely meals which we enjoyed.

The location is sensational, little piece of paradise in the Caribbean. The free kayaks, paddle boards and snorkeling gear were also in good quality and fun to use. Finally, the diner on its own was just perfect and delicious. My husband said he ate the best octopus of his life!

Akwaba lodge is located at the middle of Isla Solarte about a 10 minute boat ride ($10/person) from Bocas del Toro. It is on a hill overlooking the water and Isla Bastimentos Breakfast is included in your stay. Lunch dinner and beverages are available at a very reasonable price. The lodge is an eco style lodge surrounded by jungle. Though there are no hiking trails through the jungle you are serenaded by the sounds of birds. Kayaks, SUP and snorkeling equipment is available for your use. Your host and their children are wonderful and will do anything to make your stay a pleasant and wonderful experience. Things to know, the lodge is off the grid with good WiFi and does not have AC, but we were comfortable with our open windows and ceiling fan. The lodge accepts credit cards, but tours and water taxis are cash only so bring US dollars. Side trips to Red Frog Beach and Green Acres Chocolate are a must. Pack insect repellent and anti-itch cream.

We stayed in the Jungle lodge house, which is in a perfect location, a little further away from the main building. We enjoyed sitting outside on the porch early in the morning with a cup of coffee and watching the water and a beautiful nature around. Sunrise and sunset at Akwaba lodge are amazing! Natali and JC are wonderful hosts - very attentive and ready to help at any moment. We also enjoyed evenings and dinners: great atmosphere, excellent cocktails and food (special thank you to a great chef Rodger), music and delicious desserts. We had a wonderful time at Akwaba lodge. Thank you!

    Remote jungle getaway

We spent 4 nights in the Jungle Bungalow - clean and spacious with a nice deck. However most of the windows did not have screens and so we were not able to open the windows at night (except one) as the area is bad for chitras (small invisible biting insects). There are a lot of stairs to get from the bungalows to the reception/dining area which wasn't a huge problem but it might be for people with mobility issues. Upon arrival to our bungalow we were told that there were beach towels and cold drinking water available in the reception area but it would have been a nice touch if the fridge was turned on with cold drinking water already there as well as the beach towels in the room, rather than having to immediately go up and down a hundred steps. Although the food was generally good, we would have appreciated having a couple more choices since there was nowhere else to eat anywhere nearby.

The lodge sits on a large beautifully maintained property. There was a small but excellent reef right off the dock for snorkelling and there were also many starfish (there is snorkel equipment available for free). We enjoyed the complimentary use of kayaks - one day we paddled about an hour to Hospital Point which had a beautiful beach and great snorkelling. Another day we took a short paddle to small river lined with mangroves. One morning we ventured on a trail further into the property to find dozens of red frogs (be sure to wear proper hiking footwear). The breakfast was plentiful, although it would have been nice to be offered a second cup of coffee. We enjoyed the pizza at lunch. I loved waking up to the sound of birds and lots of squawking parrots!

A moment out of time, a fantastic stay. Incredible lodge surrounded by lush nature. Everything was done to ensure that our stay went smoothly, and that we were able to make the most of it (snorkeling equipment available, help and advice on the sites to see in the area....). I would just say if you want to spend a lot of time in Bocas take a Hotel in Town as the Watertaxi to the Hotel costs about 8$ per person.

Hands down the best place we have stayed on in any of our travels. We enjoyed being a bit more isolated from Bocas itself. The island is amazingly vibrant and natural. The owners are just so friendly and the food was really amazing. Being able to borrow the Kayaks and Snorkeling gear was a nice plus. One day we Kayaked over to Red Frog Beach and saw some Dolphins along the way. If you Kayak along the shores there is a good chance to see sloths as well. We also really just enjoyed spending time in the Hammocks on one if the docks.

Everything was perfect. The owners and the staff were super friendly and nice, the place itself is surrounded by paradise, there's also a backyard jungle. The food is delightful (if you're visiting - definitely book a dinner as well). Besides the amazing nature we also saw a lot of different animals including sloths, dolphins, tropical birds.. you can use kayaks for free and go explore the surroundings by yourself. The water is super clear, you can see starfish, small rayfish, even a small tiburon (a vegetarian one - no worries). I wish we could have stayed longer. Definitely miss this amazing place already! PS - there are small small mosquitoes called chitras. Make sure to be prepared for those.
