How guest reviews work
Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We use a weighted review system which means that the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
- Politically sensitive comments
- Promotional content
- Illegal activities
- Personal or sensitive information (e.g. emails, phone numbers or credit card info)
- Swear words, sexual references, hate speech, discriminatory remarks, threats, or references to violence
- Spam and fake content
- Animal cruelty
- Impersonation (e.g. if the writer is claiming to be someone else)
- Any violation of our review guidelines.
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
Guidelines and standards for Reviews
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options may be available (by type of traveller, by score, etc.).

Verified reviewI had the pleasure of spending four magical days at Akwaba Lodge in Bocas del Toro, and it was truly a dream come true! This place is a tropical paradise, perfect for anyone looking to relax, recharge, and reconnect with nature. From the moment I arrived, I felt completely at peace – surrounded by lush greenery, with the soothing sound of the waves in the background. It's the ideal spot for nature lovers and those who seek calm and serenity. What truly made the stay unforgettable were the incredible hosts, Mr. Jean and Natalie. They are warm, welcoming, and go above and beyond to make your stay special. Always ready with great advice, whether it's helping you plan excursions, suggesting excellent restaurants on nearby islands, or simply ensuring you're comfortable – they truly care about their guests. The food at the on-site restaurant is exceptional! Every dish is a delight – fresh, flavorful, and infused with a unique French touch that makes it absolutely delicious. Dining here was a daily highlight. Whether you're a couple looking for a romantic escape, a solo traveler, or a family with kids – this place has something for everyone. There are plenty of activities to enjoy together, and the whole property is thoughtfully designed to cater to relaxation and fun. I highly, highly recommend Akwaba Lodge to anyone looking for a unique and unforgettable holiday experience in Bocas del Toro. I can't wait to come back!

Thank you so much for your lovely review and perfect rating! We’re thrilled that you enjoyed the peaceful atmosphere and the adventure of paddling to Red Frog Beach and Hospital Point — and it’s wonderful that you got to see dolphins, sloths, and monkeys along the way! We're also happy you had a great time visiting the Zapatilla Islands. It sounds like you truly made the most of everything Bocas has to offer. We’d love to welcome you back to Akwaba Lodge anytime! Verified reviewOwners of the Lodge are very kind and help you with every need that you might have. They help calling you taxy boat and organizing tours. We decided to always have dinner at the lodge because the food is really good.
The property is located on an island (isla Solaris) which is quite isolated from the rest - you always need a taxy boat to reach anything else. Some facilities are not really new But is a good compromise for the price.
Thank you very much for your feedback and kind rating! We’re happy to hear you enjoyed our hospitality, the food, and our help organizing excursions and water taxis during your stay. Akwaba Lodge is located on Isla Solarte, immersed in nature, offering a true sense of disconnection — yet just a short 10-minute boat ride from Bocas town. Thank you as well for your note on the facilities; we always strive to find the right balance between comfort, authenticity, and affordability. We’d be delighted to welcome you back for another peaceful tropical escape! Nat & JC

Verified reviewWe were made to feel very welcome by Jean Christian, Natali & family. We loved that it was a family affair. The food was excellent, and I personally enjoyed that dinners were a limited choice (freshness, avoiding waste etc), but others might not be so keen
It was a little bit isolated - we hadn’t realised that everywhere was a water taxi away (our bad)
Thank you so much for your kind words and for sharing your experience. We’re very happy that you enjoyed the warm family atmosphere, the homemade food, and our intentionally limited dinner menu — designed to ensure freshness and reduce waste. As for the location, Akwaba Lodge is on one of the islands in the Bocas del Toro archipelago, where even the main island, Isla Colón, is only accessible by boat. In fact, almost everything in Bocas is done by boat, including the vast majority of excursions. It’s an essential part of the local experience, though we understand it may come as a surprise to those unfamiliar with the region. It was truly a pleasure to host you. Nat & JC

Verified reviewHospitality and kindness of the family and owners. They were very responsive to our questions and needs, providing us with a fan in our room and preparing dinner with limited time to spare. They provided helpful recommendations about local adventure activities and organized transportation back to the airport for us.
The mosquitoes, bats, and jungle atmosphere. We did not anticipate this from the description of the place entirely. Although we used bug spray (DEET and Picardin), and wore long sleeves, we woke up every morning with multiple new bug bites. There was no mosquito net in our home (despite online description), and there were critters every morning around us in the bedroom, small kitchen area, and bathroom. We had a family of bats living outside our home, and that creeped us out! There were limited food options near the lodge (besides the lodge itself), and we had to take a water taxi everywhere.
Thank you for taking the time to share your experience. We’re glad to hear you appreciated our hospitality, flexibility with dinner, and help organizing your transportation during your stay. We’re truly sorry that some aspects of the natural environment did not meet your expectations. The Jungle House, which you selected, is fully immersed in nature and designed to offer an authentic experience — something many of our guests seek, though we understand it may not suit everyone. We’d also like to clarify that all windows and openings in the Jungle House are equipped with fixed mosquito screens, and we take great care to minimize the presence of insects inside. That said, in a tropical setting, especially during humid seasons, some presence of wildlife is sometimes unavoidable. Thank you again for your comments — they help us keep improving both our communication and the comfort of our guests. Nat & JC

Verified reviewWe enjoyed our stay at Akwaba. The location is quiet and remote and we thought the food at the restaurant and the welcomng family that own the place were friendly. We personally struggled without airconditioning (which we obviously knew about prior to booking) as our room got super warm without much wind about. Make sure you pack your insect repellent too, as the midges/sandflies at dusk especially are brutal. We loved spending time in the hammocks down on the jetty and free use of stand-up paddle boards and kayaks was great. Recommend.
Thank you very much for your kind words and helpful feedback! We're glad you enjoyed the peaceful location, the meals, and the time spent relaxing in the hammocks or exploring the area with our kayaks and paddleboards. You're right — our lodge is designed to be naturally ventilated, and while most of the year the sea breeze does the job, some still days can feel warmer. We appreciate your understanding and your note about insect repellent — a great tip for future guests, especially at dusk. It was a pleasure hosting you, and we’d be happy to welcome you again at Akwaba Lodge! Nat & JC

Verified reviewSet in lush grounds. Kayaks and snorkeling gear of decent quality. Fresh bread at breakfast. Quality of the cooking. Reluctant to be critical as Natali works really hard but we wish we had know this info. beforehand.
Both the price point and descriptions give impression of somewhere of much higher quality. all negative aspects came down to adding to the poor value for money. Natali cooked flavoursome meals, but $25 for 3 chicken and pepper fajitas and tomato sauce and eggs isn't good value. Facilities generally and in room were poor. Supermarket pump soap, one shampoo/bodywash in shower. No hot water in sink, basin or shower. Quality of fittings low grade. Stove top coffee pot but when we asked for a spoon, were told no spoons available in the room. Any hot drinks additional cost. In 3 months of travel never had to pay extra for cereal, yoghurt, eggs. Coral/snorkeling direct from property is middling.
Dear Guest, Thank you for your feedback, although we are of course disappointed that your experience at Akwaba Lodge did not fully meet your expectations. However, we would like to clarify a few important points: 🔹 Hot water: Hot water is fully functional in all our rooms, including the apartment you stayed in. It is not a solar-powered system, but a reliable gas water heater. No other guests reported any issues during your stay, and we would have been happy to assist you immediately had you mentioned it on-site. 🔹 Toiletries: We provide a high-quality 2-in-1 body and hair gel imported from Germany, available in eco-friendly dispensers. This is part of our commitment to reducing plastic waste without compromising on quality. 🔹 Apartment amenities: The apartment is fully equipped with a stove, utensils, cookware, dishes, fridge, coffee maker, kettle, etc. If something was missing (such as a spoon, as mentioned), a simple request would have been enough — we are always happy to provide whatever is needed. 🔹 Meals: Our $25 dinner menu includes a homemade starter and main course, prepared with fresh, often local ingredients. Considering our location on an island accessible only by boat, this price is fair and reflects the logistical constraints. You also had the freedom to cook in your apartment if our offer did not suit your preferences. 🔹 Snorkeling: Equipment is available free of charge. The snorkeling experience naturally varies with tides and weather. For more exceptional spots, we offer guided excursions, which we’re always happy to organize for our guests. We are still glad you enjoyed the natural setting, the fresh homemade bread, and the breakfast. Natali is deeply involved in hosting our guests, and we truly care about offering a peaceful, high-quality stay in harmony with nature. We sincerely hope you still keep some fond memories of your time with us. Warm regards, Nat & JC Akwaba Lodge

Verified reviewThe location was great, the landscaping was amazing, The food was REALLY tasty. Great cook. Complimentary breakfast was a plus ( but look what I did not like ) Natalie , the host was very helpful,
First, the house we have got in my opinion was the best ( the size, the view, and the covered veranda ) Just few details will help to improve the stay: Some wall hooks, to hang clothes, hook by the door to hang the keys , and maybe some benches ( one in the bathroom!! ) to put our stuff. Regarding the breakfast, it was nice but skimpy, pot of coffee instead of one small cup please !! :) When I read about the house it was saying it has a kitchen and pats and plates, I was expecting also the usual rental house stuff ( some tea, sugar, salt etc ) but it was not there. I dont think it cost much the owners but it was inconvenient on first day. The place is great and hope this can help to the owners and new renters. I still could rent this again
Thank you so much for your thoughtful and detailed feedback! We’re delighted that you enjoyed the peaceful atmosphere, the landscape, the food — and that you found the house and veranda perfect for relaxing. Your kind words about our cooking and hospitality mean a lot to us. We also truly appreciate your suggestions. You’re absolutely right — small additions like hooks, a bathroom bench, or basic kitchen staples can make a big difference, and we’ll be working on those improvements. If you are looking for peace, tranquility and nature this is a great place to stay and get away from it all - tiny hummingbirds, parrots, star fish and dolphins were bonuses. No beach but visit to red frog island had a wonderful sandy beach. Nathalie organised a tour to other islands which I would highly recommend. Sadly too rough for paddle boarding while we were there but I can imagine this would be amazing on a calm day. And finally - The suppers were delicious!

Location. Totally isolated on Solarte. If you want that great, but if you are active traveler you are constrained to tours/water taxis which I knew, but didn't realize how constrictive/expensive that would be. If you want freedom/flexibility - stay on Isla Colon.
Dear Colin, Thank you for taking the time to share your thoughts about your stay at Akwaba Lodge. We’re delighted to hear that you found the property beautiful and enjoyed our food – it truly means a lot to us. We understand that our location on Isla Solarte, while peaceful and secluded, may not suit every travel style. However, it’s worth noting that we are only a 10-minute boat ride from Isla Colón. Additionally, most of the main activities in Bocas del Toro take place outside of Isla Colón, making boat transportation a necessity regardless of where you stay. At Akwaba Lodge, we make this easier by offering all excursions directly from our property, ensuring both comfort and convenience. It is on a hill overlooking the water and Isla Bastimentos Breakfast is included in your stay. Lunch dinner and beverages are available at a very reasonable price. The lodge is an eco style lodge surrounded by jungle. Though there are no hiking trails through the jungle you are serenaded by the sounds of birds. Kayaks, SUP and snorkeling equipment is available for your use. Your host and their children are wonderful and will do anything to make your stay a pleasant and wonderful experience. Things to know, the lodge is off the grid with good WiFi and does not have AC, but we were comfortable with our open windows and ceiling fan. The lodge accepts credit cards, but tours and water taxis are cash only so bring US dollars. Side trips to Red Frog Beach and Green Acres Chocolate are a must.
