We had a perfect stay at Ataraxia. If you are looking for a quiet, home away from home in a beautiful remote location for down time and with activities only a stone’s throw away, stay here. It’s a tranquil retreat in the jungle where you can eat in their restaurant as if you are dining at home. Yoga deck looking out. Amazing front deck outside our room, which we loved sitting out on every afternoon/evening to read/relax. Comfy bed. Yummy food by chef Nati who is Panamanian. Amazing hosts Manon and Pierre who helped us with everything we needed and were so friendly and the perfect hosts. We had a fun filled time here. Activities every day on every other island. Also they have snorkels and kayaks for free we used. And then ‘home’ for evening time. Heaven. We adored this place.

Nothing. It was one of our faves out of 30 places we stayed in 5 months!

We loved our stay at Ataraxia! It was our second time in Bocas and this time our experience was so much better because of the beautiful jungle lodge we stayed in! The experience waking up in the jungle is a unique experience that we enjoyed so much! We would definitely recommend Ataraxia to anybody looking for the perfect combination of beach and jungle :)

I would like to thank Pierre and his wife for all their attentions with us. Food was great and the facilities, away from towns were excellent to relax.

Warning: this is NOT about Ataraxia, but about transport from Almirante to Colon Island. In bad weather conditions, boats are certainly not safe. Pasengeres are not required to wear a life jacket, the ones I saw were ragged, filthy, dirty, and greasy; straps are missing and so on. It would take two seconds a wave to turn one of those boats upside down; it would take a person more than that to grab and fasten a life jacket properly. Imagine in an emergency... i wish i had the pen of H. Hemingway to accurately describe how vulnerable I felt during a windy and rainy journey with my children from Almirante to Colón Island.

Hola Luis and thank you for your review , we are glad you enjoyed your stay here and very sorry that you got such a big scare. The sea was unfortunately quite rough the day you travelled and security measures are supposed to be respected but not always enforced depending on the company 😔 I hope you will have a much smoother and enjoyable ride on the canal , tomorrow if I remember correctly. Kind regards, Manon and Pierre

We had a lovely stay, we stayed first in the double room and after in the bungalow. What an experience, also hiking to the old town was an adventure. We found many frogs and beautiful butterflies. On our last day we even spotted a sloth. *Book your tours through them! Highly recommend! *breakfast & diner was perfect, we really enjoyed. My boyfriend can’t stop talking about the tuna steak!

Pierre and Manon are excellent hosts with a wealth of information about the local area incl things to see and places to eat. Dinner is optional at their place and the food was excellent both nights we ate there. The bed was comfortable and there was plenty of space in the room. Kayaks are available and there is snorkeling right in front of the property. We were also fortunate to see a sloth waIk thru the garden. I would recommend staying at Ataraxia

Being so close to nature was amazing. We woke up with bird sounds, hummingbirds were flying around the veranda of our hut, we found sloths hanging n the trees and red frogs hiding in the lush forest. Also the breakfast but especially the dinner were very delicious. The host was very kind and hospitable.

Absolutely amazing place to stay. It was so lovely to be so close to nature in the lodges in the forest. Really nice walks around the property and the owners are great. It is well worth booking to eat dinner each night at the property's own restaurant. The food is delicious and great value.

The stunning lodge is set just back from the waterfront with several cabins high on the hillside overlooking the channel between Bastimentos and Isla Solarte, 2 km away. The view through the trees from our cabin (no 5) was stunning; it was easy to while away many hours watching birds (and sloths) from our huge veranda with the backdrop of the Caribbean Sea. Our cabin was large, beautifully laid out, spotlessly clean and with a really comfortable bed. The restaurant is situated even higher up the slope, where it really felt like you were perched in the tree canopy. Breakfasts (included) were always beautifully presented. The optional dinners were a set menu (and had to be ordered earlier in the day); they were invariably delicious. Pierre and Manon, our hosts, were ever helpful, kind and knowledgeable. They did everything possible to make our stay as enjoyable as possible. Jami, Nati and the other staff all went out of their way to look after us. Ataraxia is remote, which makes it so atmospheric. It is surrounded by jungle which abounds with birds, red poison dart frogs and, while we were there, several sloths. Really enjoyed kayaking along the mangroves. Thoroughly recommended and would love to return.

    Nothing. It was lovely

I still dream of Ataraxia and its beautiful surroundings. The food was exquisite, super fresh and homemade. (Also great for vegetarians). The free use of kayaks and snorkelling gear was great, we even spotted a dolphin from the dock. The staff is super friendly and make you feel right at home without being intrusive.

This place is basically like paradise. The cabins are absolutely beautiful as is the entire property. The restaurant on top of the hill provides not only beatiful views, but also delicious food. The hosts are incredibly nice, like to chat with the guests and offer many great suggestions on what to see and where to eat in the area (every suggestion we've tried was excellent). We also used the provided kayaks to explore around the island. If you are visiting Bocas del Toro, I recommend Ataraxia with all my heart.

The owners Pierre and Manon were super nice and very caring and helpful with booking tours and giving tips. Waking up with the noise of the waves and birds was unforgettable. Being immerse in nature was a unique experience.

I booked this place without doing too much research, so it's partly fault. It is not a place for everybody. As it is very isolated I would have expected higher services within the hotel, in particular dinner which was a set menu for $25 and lacked choice. To reach the restaurant, which is located upwards on the hill, is a short hike itself. The town is 30 minutes hike across the jungle, not a basic one. The water of the beach is muddy which means you also need to move during the day.

    Property response:

Hi Giorgio, thank you for taking the time for writing this review. it is a bit disappointing to us that most things that come as a negative to you (isolation, food option for example) are specifically explained to all our clients before coming. We take the time of sending people this information to avoid surprises, and it is a shame you did not take the time to read this info and then raise it as negative point about the hotel. We are indeed not the right place for single travelers looking to party and meet people, and we try to make it as clear as possible. Regarding the hike to town and the murkiness of the water at ataraxia, December and January have been the rainiest months we have experienced in Bocas in our 8 years here and the quantity of rain affected both the quality of the hiking trails as well as the cleanliness of water. Luckily it is back to being beautiful after a couple of sunny days. We hope you enjoyed the rest of your trip in Miami and wish you all the best.

Ataraxia was amazing! The hosts were super attentive and very helpful. They always made time to answer our questions or to provide suggestions for where to eat or visit while in Bastimentos. We had a couple of dinners in the restaurant which was so special. The location of the restaurant is stunning and the food was super tasty. The experience is like having a private chef cook for you. The breakfasts were delicious too.

Incredible and unique place, but it may not be for everyone. The owners are very kind and helpful, the area and the huts are amazing. Due to the nature of the place (pun intended) it comes with some challenges (remote place, bugs, geckos entering your room, taking a short hike to get to the dining area, jungle noises at night...) but I couldn't list them as negative things since it's a part of the experience. Make sure you read the description carefully and especially the message sent by the place after booking to avoid surprises!

Thanks so much for the nice review. Hope you had a nice stay in Costa Rica

Wow, this accommodation blew us away! Pierre and Manon who are running this property with a lot of LOVE are incredible people worthy of admiration! They bought a house with a good amount of land around it and have constructed several cabins, a yoga deck, a restaurant and a boat house over the last few years. Ataraxia has its own pier, so boatmen will easily take you there from Isla Colon. At the back of the property, there is a nature reserve, a jungle with so many treasures! We were able to spot the red frogs, caimans, a racoon, yellowtail birds, giant turquoise butterflies, turtles, giant ants, we rented a free kayak and paddled through the mangroves nearby, and we walked on several occasions to Old Bank, the main village on Isla Bastimentos, and once to Wizzard Beach. Manon also booked us a trip to Zapatilla (including sloth, dolphin and starfish spotting and snorkeling) and Pierre arranged our transportation to the airport. Several ideas for activities in the area conveniently presented in a booklet in the room (Zapatilla trip, Wizzard Beach hike, Red Frog & Polo Beach, bio-luminescence tour, etc.). Free kayaks and snorkeling gear available. If you are into botany and medicinal plants, you will have a lot to talk about with Pierre who planted so many of them around the property. Running a guesthouse in the middle of the jungle is a hard task, yet the couple somehow manage it and always keep smiling and interacting with guests at all times. Thank you very much, we will never forget our stay with you! You are a true inspiration! Be aware that: there is no hot water or AC and you cannot use a hairdrier, as the place runs on solar energy. There is wifi. Rooms are cleaned daily and are very spacious. Cold drinks available in the common fridge and option to have dinner. Tasty and creative breakfast included.

Are you kidding? We had a blast!
