How guest reviews work
Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We use a weighted review system which means that the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
- Politically sensitive comments
- Promotional content
- Illegal activities
- Personal or sensitive information (e.g. emails, phone numbers or credit card info)
- Swear words, sexual references, hate speech, discriminatory remarks, threats, or references to violence
- Spam and fake content
- Animal cruelty
- Impersonation (e.g. if the writer is claiming to be someone else)
- Any violation of our review guidelines.
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
Guidelines and standards for Reviews
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options may be available (by type of traveller, by score, etc.).

Verified reviewThe experience of staying on an actual beach ecosystem. We encountered a lot of curious crabs. The hostel's location is right at the both sides of the island: the ocean side and the laguna side with tranquil waters perfect for swimming. We rented a kayak to explore the mangroves. The food is elaborate and very delicious!
We used the tent, which had mattresses in it. However, we were a bit surprised there were no cushions or sheets. We had to rent them as an extra.
hola thanks for your return. we are sorry about sheets and pillows but it's written in the reservation that it's not included if you reserve a tent. it's just 3$ per person for all long you stay not by night. when you reserve a cabaña it's included. gracias

Verified reviewWe arrived by boat (Jean Pierre picked us up) and it was an amazing experience. They have a large property and different huts- for eating, living lodges and two showers. I loved our hut, the showers and toilet hut, they are all natural, made of coconut materials, from palm trees and leaves, coconut shells, with attention to details. You get water and electricity from sunlight, you get a very special experience of calm, close to nature stay, relaxing.🤩 Irina is an amazing cook, I highly recommend to take lunch and dinners, you will get great fresh cooked food, healthy and nutritious. With touch of European cuisine and all local ingredients. Also jams and lemonade from own grown fruits 🫶 The best part was of course the turtle - we were lucky and even at the end of turtle egg season we saw at night a big turtle (species verde) laying eggs. Jean Pierre is an amazing guide, he explains how turtles lay eggs, how the orient themselves, details of behavior and how we can preserve them. The turtle nest nursery on the hostel territory has nests and we witness two days in a row birth of baby turtles and released them. 🐢👌🙏🏻 We are so thankful that Jean-Pierre and Irina let us join the process fully. Not only watching, but digging, picking eggs and baby turtles. After this experience I feel that I was 100% part of it. This is fantastic experience 👏🏻 thank you! During the day we were swimming oder kayaking through the mangroves.
Nothing to complain. All was great 👍🏻

Verified reviewThe highlight of our trip to Panama, it's like heaven on earth. Jean Pierre and Irina are wonderful people and everything was perfect. We didn't want to leave. We were lucky to see both laying and hatching turtles with Jean Pierre, and the lagoon was bioluminescent during our stay.
There was nothing not to like.
hola Sophie thanks a lot. we try to do the best and sure you're lucky because you are nice people and the turtles know that and give you presents !!!!!! see you soon. best regards Irina and Jean Pierre

Verified reviewA stay at Pachamama ist a great experience. Located in the middle of Isla Cañas it is surrounded by two water fronts with a wonderful beach and lots of coconut trees. Jean-Pierre and Irina are wonderful hosts, so that you feel welcome at any point. They put lots of effort building up the place with little Palm tree houses as accomodation. But the tent is a great budget option. Facilities are simple but clean and everything you need. Really enjoyed my stay and would come back any time!
Nothing for poeple that like luxury, but If you like the simple life and nature it's the place to go.

Verified reviewThe location is amazing if you're looking for a quiet time, walking on an almost empty beach, swimming undisturbed in the ocean, watching the sun rise up from the water, having a drink at the sunset, gazing at the stars at night, listening to the waves, enjoying great food... The hosts Pierre and Irina are great at making the stay as smooth and enjoyable as possible for all guests, and they make everyone feel welcome in this little corner or paradise :)
The remote location can be challenging to reach and requires a bit of patience -- but that's part of what makes the Pachamama hostel special! The amenities are simple and in the same time charming, so expect little and you'll have a pleasant surprised :)

Verified reviewIt was the perfect location to disconnect. It feels like an abundant island to connect with the nature. If you want to stay alone at the beach and enjoy yourself, that’s the perfect place. The owners are very warm, welcoming and care about everyone that comes around. It’s a place where simplicity overrules comfort but in a good way. Our cabaña was clean and isolated from the rest to fully enjoy been kind of isolated. Something to point out is that you pre-booked dinner will be served and enjoyed together with the other residence. The offered meals aren’t too costly and delicious. They serve cold Atlas Beer in the Color of Panama and France 👍
We caught a pretty windy night that you really feel within you cabaña. It’s quite a trip to get there but JP is glad to pick you up with the private boat Taxi what we would really recommend to get there. Be aware that there is only limited power during the daytime (solar power) and you need to take care of your mobile data since there is no WiFi. But that could be something you really want at that place.

Verified reviewThe island is beautiful and the village has nice people, bars, restaurants, minimarkets, public boat going through the mangroves... And we even saw the bioluminescence in the ocean one night.
Way overpriced The hut we stayed in was basic with bats hanging above the bed that shat on the moscito net right above our faces and with cockroaches on the table and bed - the owners say it's natural - if you tell them about your worries that they may transfer diseases you might get insulted and called "too soft to live in the nature". If you don't want to walk 2km by the beach, they charge you 16$ to get you by boat - to put this into perspective: a person working in a laundry in Panama gets payed 2,80$ per hour. If two groups arrive at the same time each is charged 16$. There is only one toilet - so you are asked to pee in the woods. He says you should save energy, as it is all solar-powered yet he has a giant fridge and a diesel electric generator. To use the fridge you pay extra. You are not allowed to drink your own drinks. People who cook for themselves are not welcome. They are asked to collect their trash in an individual plastic bag and take it home with them. So if you don't take the overpriced boat service you can carry this bag for 1 hour with you. At the place where you are supposed to leave it we saw children burning trash. If you don't want to carry the trash with you, you are charged 2$ per day extra. If you don't agree with that, you get friendly words, then angry whatsapp messages and finally the trash bag thrown at you (literally onto your body). They offer breakfast for 5$ and dinner for 12$ The meals are very simple like toast with eggs for breakfast. Not as good as in the village but 3 to 4 times as expensive. Beer is twice as expensive as in the village. By boat the place is really easy to reach and they also have motorcycles and quads to reach the village in 5 minutes, yet they exploit that you don't get around as easily without them. You are asked to pay a deposit before you come, via PayPal or Western Union and so you pay all the fees by yourself instead of them to Booking.
Hello, Thank you for your feedback and we are sorry that your stay did not bring you total satisfaction. On the other hand, we have to make some clarifications on our side, and re-establish the truth on certain points. Even before making a reservation, you have a lot of information that unfortunately few people read. Like the fact that we are on an island and that you have to take a boat. The different options and prices are indicated in the section "TO KNOW". So you have the choice according to your budget before you even book. What does this have to do with the hourly wage of a local worker ???? The journey with the private boat is 4 kms from the mainland to the Pachamama by appointment at the desired time. This makes 8 kms because we make a trip to pick you up. The price does not only include fuel, but also engine oil, depreciation and maintenance of the boat, time, license, etc ... Whereas with the public boat the crossing is less than 200 meters and the price is subsidized by the municipality. Regarding your remark about the different price per group for the boat, do you ask a special price to the airline because you are in the same plane with people you do not know? For the prepayment it is normal that the Paypal fees are at your charge. We have made an exception for you by not asking you to pay in advance. And we pay commissions to Booking and it is wrong to say that you have to pay them. The Paypal or Western Union fees have absolutely nothing to do with Booking. The traditional huts are located directly on the beach and there is a lot of life here. Insects, bats, lizards, field mice, birds, ants, mosquitoes and even roaches. That's why we ask you not to keep food in the cabins. It is totally impossible to ask Booking to tell you all these details. All this is not listed in the booking form. We are sorry if this has inconvenienced you. To avoid this discomfort, it is better to choose less exotic establishments. Concerning the toilets, there is an error on the booking site, it is mentioned that there are several toilets and only one shower. It is the opposite. We will contact them to ask for a modification. Please note that unfortunately the editorial is written by booking.com and not by us. We don't force anyone to urinate outside, it's just a recommendation to avoid a waiting time. About energy, we are not connected to the city grid, not by choice but because it is not possible today. We use a solar installation to supply the Pachamama with clean energy. However, when 10 people recharge their phones or batteries, or their computers, and when the operation of a family refrigerator and not a giant one is mandatory, we are obliged to use a back-up generator that runs on liquefied gas and not on diesel. This is for the comfort of all. The refrigerator is only for the restaurant. It is totally wrong that you have to pay to put your food in it because we do not offer it. Regarding the meals and drinks you may find them too expensive but please don't judge because you didn't take any. And look at the other comments to see what those who have tasted Irina's cooking think. So that this message can be useful to our future visitors, Breakfast includes a hot drink of your choice, toast, fruit, ham or cheese omelet for vegetarians, or coconut oatmeal for vegans, homemade jam, honey and cane honey. The meals are composed of 2 courses, a starter and a main course. For example a gazpacho as a starter and a fish en papillote with yuca. All cooked at home. We also offer vegetarian or vegan menus on request. The beer costs 2 US dollars for 355 ml whereas in the village it costs 1 US dollar for 250 ml and you don't have to go 4 kms to get it. Indeed we do not accept that you consume your own drinks in the restaurant area and on our private beach. And we find that quite normal. On the other hand, in the space you have reserved and on the public beach, it is perfectly possible. What do you care if we have vehicles to move around? You are not going to reproach a cab for having a car and doing you a favor by charging you for a ride. What's more, you haven't asked us for anything. So why blame us? As soon as you arrived, you knew that you would have to take your waste back to the mainland because there is no collection or treatment service on the island. And you agreed or at least you did not object. At least not until the day before your departure. Why do you give as arguments that you saw children burning their garbage to avoid taking yours back to the mainland? It doesn't make sense !!! We do give you an individual garbage can so that you don't have to bring in other people's bins. And so far we have never had a problem in 5 years ... except with you. When you take meals at the restaurant, it is our responsibility to treat the waste. However, the waste you generate by cooking for free in the communal kitchen is your responsibility. We do not charge you for the gas you use. So sorry but being obliged to re-establish all the unfounded negative points that you express and at the sight of your behavior during your stay, neither hello, nor thank you, nor anything, and your arrogance the day before your departure, I got carried away rightly I think. We never asked anyone to pay 2$ a day for the garbage except you. Which you didn't pay by the way. Criticism is constructive and we will try to do our best, but it must also be fair and justified. Sincerely Jean Pierre.

Verified reviewFantastic location. Amazing elevated hut with comfy bed, right on the beach. You can see and hear the Pacific from your bed. Your own hammocks underneath the hut. Surrounded by hundreds of palmtrees, and only the sound of birds and the ocean. Irina and Jean Pierre are wonderful hosts. The great communication and help to get there, the pick up (by boat!), all went perfect because of them. I felt really welcome. Irina is a master chef if you ask me. She prepares the most fantastic breakfast, lunch and dinner you can imagine. Definitely worth the extra money! I love going to places that are a little out of the ordinairy and Pachamama is definitely one of the best I've been to so far. From the community area, till the outdoorshowers. The unique toilethut with its own palm lane... Higly recommended!!
Hola Susan, Thank you very much for your comment. We are very touched. Looking forward to seeing you again here or on your island!!! Best regards Irina & Jean pierre
