A perfect, convenient hostel at Portobelo - ideal for diving and snorkeling

None, it fits perfect for the purpose, no luxury.

The hotel is mainly devoted to diving, and as such, the installations are oriented to this purpose. There is a private boat, leaving just from the hotel´s dock and equipment (snorkels, tanks,) is first-class. Simple, yet very tasty home-cooked food is available at very reasonable price. The location is very close to the entrance of Portobelo and its historic ruins, at walking distance. Portobelo is a quiet, very interesting, genuine historic and fokfloric location, blessed by a wonderful sea. The hotel is being improved and refurbished, the rooms are still very simple, yet enough for an unformal stay. A great plus, the very single ATM existing in Portobelo can be found at less than 80 meters, and protected by the police station. Staff is very, very kind, and multingual. Highly recommendable.

Unfortunately it was the rainy/wet season which I was unaware of (mid April to December) so we weren't able to go on the trips available but the the hotel was not to blame for this obviously.

The staff, including the owners, were exceptionally kind, friendly and accommodating. My friend needed a fridge for his medication and it was provided immediately. The food was freshly prepared and delicious. The location by the water was quiet. peaceful and breezy and plus it wasn't too far from Portobello proper.

    Hotel or Diving School?

A diving school operates from the hotel and some of the instructors live on site. They have a poor attitude towards hotel guests. When we checked in we asked the hotel receptionist if we could use the communal kitchen to access a fridge and heat water, which we understood she agreed. In the morning while heating the water, we were confronted by one of the diving instructors who demanded we get out of this area, as it was for staff only. Her aggressive behaviour towards us was totally unnecessary and left us feeling humiliated. As a result we would not recommend a stay here unless you are diving. It is a shame as the hotel staff work hard but sadly their efforts are ruined by some of the instructors who seem to think the entire property belongs to them. I hope they show more empathy with their diving students

Beautiful location only a few minutes drive from Portobello. Helpful hotel staff, restaurant onsite (closes at 6pm, very clean, nicely decorated.

An almost empty room for 77$. Two beds, one plastic cupboard, one bedside table. No chair, no desk, no reading lamp, no pictures, no hammok, cold shower. For this money I get a whole appartment on booking.com in the capital.

Very friendly and funny hosts. And they let me leave early without paying the rest of the booked days.

I'd recommend putting more chairs at the porch so guests don't have to share with other guests next door. Parking lot gets muddy when it rains, so placing a rug outside the door would help guests brush off the dirt before entering the room. In the bathroom, I recommend adding more towel hooks so guests can hang wet gear and towels. I recommend offering drinks at the outside bar at night and playing some lively music to draw out the guests. We ended up taking our store purchased beers there and enjoying the night from that spot, but I would have loved to buy cocktails if it was available.

Location has a boat dock, and an outside captain that can do snorkerling trips. It also has a little beach area where you can swim. The hotel has it's own diving boats and tours, so you can book with them directly for trips. There's an unused bar right on the water, so you can enjoy your drinks there. Room was clean, comfortable, and had enough beds for all of us. Sitting on the porch, you can relax listening to the waves and cool off from the ocean breeze. Staff was very friendly, and the managers speak English. The dining area has breakfast and dinner options (didn't stay long enough to find out about lunch). Dinner was delicious and reasonably priced. There's also another very good restaurant about 3-5 minutes walking distance away if you prefer to go there instead. I believe there's a police station nearby, so we were not concerned about safety/security. I liked that the managers gave you the option of late checkout when nobody is booked on your departure date, they're very accomodating.
