How guest reviews work
Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We use a weighted review system which means that the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
- Politically sensitive comments
- Promotional content
- Illegal activities
- Personal or sensitive information (e.g. emails, phone numbers or credit card info)
- Swear words, sexual references, hate speech, discriminatory remarks, threats, or references to violence
- Spam and fake content
- Animal cruelty
- Impersonation (e.g. if the writer is claiming to be someone else)
- Any violation of our review guidelines.
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
Guidelines and standards for Reviews
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options may be available (by type of traveller, by score, etc.).

Verified reviewThe staff were so kind for my one night stay before heading to Malapascua the next morning. Romeo guided me to the Joyful Hut and arranged a short motorbike ride to Maya Port at my desired time the following morning. It was the warmest welcome to the Philippines, and made me feel super comfortable as a female solo traveller from the UK.

Verified reviewThe staff was available. Spacious.
It was dirty, smelled bad, got a weird vibe from the staff and felt really uncomfortable. The whole area around was really loud you can hear everything around you and we woke up to the neighbors karaoke party at 7am. It’s not close to the maya-malapascua port as advertised (20 min walk and not 3).
Thank you for your feedback. We're sorry to hear that your experience didn’t meet your expectations. We are proud to be consistently reviewed as very friendly and accommodating staff, and it’s unfortunate that you felt otherwise during your stay. Regarding the location, walking times can vary depending on the route and walking pace, but you can always check Google Maps for an accurate estimate based on your preferences. As for the noise, we understand how important rest is. While we can’t control external factors like neighboring karaoke parties, we’re looking into possible ways to help minimize disturbances in the future. We appreciate your comments—they help us improve—and we regret that your stay didn’t reflect the experience we strive to provide.

Verified reviewRomeo, however, was very kind and nice. Thank you!
One of the worst night I have ever had. The bed was small and the place was okay. There was noise outside since 1:30am in the morning, it did not stop all morning, and we hardly slept. I would recommend going elsewhere if you want to sleep. We got charged 170php for a 5 minute journey to the port, very expensive.
Thank you for your feedback. We’re sorry to hear that your stay didn’t meet your expectations. We understand how important a good night’s sleep is, and while we do our best to maintain a peaceful environment, external noise is unfortunately outside our control. We’re glad to hear you found Romeo kind and helpful—he’s a valued part of our team and always goes the extra mile for our guests. Regarding the transport fee, the 170 PHP charge is not part of our service—it’s set by the local drivers and is a fixed rate. We understand everyone has different views on pricing, but at around $3 USD, we personally don’t find it unreasonable given the area and availability. We appreciate you sharing your thoughts, and we’ll continue working to improve the experience for all our guests.

Verified reviewIt’s by far the cutest, nicest and coziest place we stayed in the Philippines so far. We arrived really late (1:30h am) and the owner was still waiting for us to give us a nice welcome!

Verified reviewIts a pretty nice house right on the sea shore, however its not so suitable for swimming. Water, instant coffee was provided.
We arranged a pick up with the staff for the next morning to the port and they told us to be ready at 7:40 in order to catch the 8am boat. We were ready by 7:40 and nobody showed up. They arrived at 8:20, saying we cannot make it to the 8am ferry yet (obviously) and they will be back by 8:40 to catch the 9am one. We were waiting and no one showed up again, so because of them we missed 2 boats. We arranged our own trasport in the end, I believe we would be still waiting for them now. The whole interior is basically outside as there are no proper walls, it can get very noisy and hot (a rooster farm is literally 2 meters from the bed and there was a very loud celebration in the village that night until 2am) might be something to consider if you are a light sleeper.
Dear Guest! Thank you for your feedback and for sharing your experience. We’re glad you appreciated the location and the setting of the property. Regarding the transfer, we’d like to clarify that the driver is not part of our staff and does not work for us. We arranged this service as a favor to assist with your transportation. Unfortunately, delays occurred due to circumstances beyond our control, and we sincerely apologize for the inconvenience caused. Your feedback is valuable, and we will work on improving communication in similar situations. We hope you were still able to enjoy your stay and wish you safe travels ahead. Verified reviewThe place is very well maintained and all the facilities are in good conditions. Romeo was very attentive, by far the best host we had on our 36-day trip to the Philippines. He gave us very valuable tips on how to get to the hotel. When we arrived, it was night and raining, the van dropped us off on a street near the hotel and he was there waiting for us with two umbrellas.

Verified reviewVery helpful and accommodating owner, there was no problem with late night arrival. The roosters will not let you sleep but you will see a beautiful sunrise. You enjoy breakfast in the garden and thanks to the proximity of the neighbours you are like a local for a while.
We fell asleep to the sound of the waves, from 2am onwards the waves were replaced by the roosters, which abounded around the area and never stopped. 😂

The water pressure was a little low. But this is the Philippines provinces and it is to be expected. The bed is a little small but it is advertised as such.

Verified reviewThe hut has a beautiful garden, a terrace on the first floor, and it's a beautiful little place. The shower was great, the living room too, and I didn't even realise there was a second floor with the room and terrace! The bedroom had a mosquito net and a fan, it was ideal for a night before taking the ferry to Malapascua. I could have stayed longer to truly enjoy the place!
It was a bit tricky to find at night from google maps: just ask the hosts for directions, they actually got someone to wait for me so they could guide me in!

Verified reviewOur overall stay was alright, but unfortunately, we had a disappointing interaction with the owner. Initially considering extending our stay, we opted against it due to feeling judged for not maintaining pristine cleanliness with kids around. Balancing family fun and tidiness can be challenging. We had intended to tidy up after a quick trip to Malapascua Island but were met with a complaint upon our return before we had even checked out. While the place was indeed messy, we had not yet completed our stay or the necessary cleanup. It was a frustrating experience that overshadowed an otherwise decent stay.
Thank you for your feedback. However, I must address some serious concerns from your stay. You booked for 2 guests but brought 5 adults and 3 children without notifying us or paying for the extra people. The property was left in a deplorable state, requiring extensive cleaning. Additionally, you used the inflatable boat without permission, violating our safety policies. Further, you extended your stay past the checkout time without informing us. Your complaint is misleading, as we had no notice of this unauthorized extension. This is the first time we've received such feedback. Typically, we receive hospitable and appreciative remarks from guests worldwide who recognize the care and attention we put into maintaining our property. It is both surprising and disappointing to receive such a complaint, especially from a fellow Filipina. We take great pride in representing our culture through hospitality and kindness, and your baseless feedback undermines that effort. Our rules ensure a safe and enjoyable experience for all guests. We hope for better adherence to our policies in the future. Thank you.
