Read more– opens a dialog boxEach review score is between 1 and 10. To get the overall score you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of them. We use a weighted review system, which means the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. Guests can also give separate “subscores” in crucial areas like location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value, and free Wifi. Note that guests submit their subscores and overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an accommodation that you booked through our platform if you stayed there, or if you got to the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialize in detecting fake reviews submitted to our platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team so that our fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we'd publish every review we get, positive and negative. However, we won’t display any reviews that include or refer to (among other things):
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out. We may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old, or if the accommodation has a change of ownership.
An accommodation can reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (e.g. language, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). You can sort and/or filter them by time of year, review score, and more.
Sometimes we show external review scores from other well-known travel websites, but make it clear when we do this.
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly, without limiting expression or strong opinions. They're also applicable regardless of the comment's tone.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include hate speech, discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, or the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and other similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties, and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options might be available (by type of traveler, by score, etc...).

United StatesWish we could have stayed longer! A sweet, quiet little house right on the sea that's still walkable to anywhere in Madalena. Very friendly and helpful welcome, with a great room and lovely little terrace/sitting area with views of both the sea and Mt. Pico. Breakfast in the morning was amazing, with a wide selection of quality options.

SwedenBeds weren't the best - lumpy pillows, matress didn't breathe much so a little bit sticky. Noisy.
WOW Mona who runs this place is an outstanding host. She was super helpful and nice to chat with. She and her partner helped us book whale watching even though the weather was tricky and few boats went out during our stay. The location is perfect - walking distance to central Madalena but several good restaurants nearby. The view of the ocean and (weather permitting) Faial was gorgeous. We spent some time each day with a cup of tea just enjoying the view from the main lounge. So happy we booked this place rather than a more central one! Plenty space to park the car. Good value!

United Statesthe mosquitos in my room.
After exploring the island during the day, it was such a delight to come back to Casa do mar and enjoy the stunning views of the Atlantic Ocean from the terrace. Mona, the house manager, is very hospitable and can offer suggestions on things to do in the area. I would definitely stay here again if I'm so fortunate to visit Pico again. Breakfast included a nice spread including fresh bread.

United StatesIt can be noisy given the layout of how the breakfast area/kitchen/common area are adjacent to the main floor bedrooms. The yoga room was gorgeous, but I feel like the space would have better used as a guest room and having the yoga room a separate structure on the property. I was glad we weren’t on the main floor. Breakfast was plentiful and tasty. Being able to use the kitchen to make dinner and eat outside with the gorgeous view was a bonus!
The location is amazing! The views are gorgeous!

NetherlandsCasa do Mar stole our hearts! We loved everything about our stay. The view at sea and Faial is mesmerizing. The facilities in the house are superb, we cooked some lovely diners in the kitchen and enjoyed eating them on the shared terrace while enjoying the sunset. In the morning you are welcomed with a lovely breakfast and hot coffee. The bed and shower is good. There is osmosis tap water, therefore you do not have to buy big bottles of water. A huge supermarket is only 10min walking. The walk into town (Madalena) is only a few minutes where you can jump into the natural swimming pools, go for a nice diner or walk to the harbour to go for a whale watching tour. The interior of the house is very scandinavian and light, with lots of wood. As said… we loved it and if we ever visit Pico again we would definetely stay here again.

United KingdomThe lack of soundproofing was a bit of an issue for me. The building is made of wood which is very beautiful but means that you hear everything from the rooms around. At the start of my stay there were quite a few families and lots of children running about. Not very peaceful! It’s a great location for a family holiday of course but you can hear every footstep and voice which meant that there was quite a lot of noise throughout the day. The weather was hot when I was there - I understand that air-conditioning is not very ecological but a fan in the room would make all the difference.
The location is amazing - the view from my balcony was stunning. The room was clean and the building and grounds are very nicely presented. Hosts were very welcoming. Breakfast was tasty and plentiful. They will also organise an early breakfast for guests if required. The property is located a 10-15 minute walk from the centre of Madalena.

SwitzerlandJust as an idea: Some deck chair in the garden would be great to enyou the nice view.
Casa do mar is a peaceful place with a nice sea view, where you are just minutes (by foot) away from a nature pool to bath. The rooms are very clean, you can cook in the shared kitchen and make friends with other guests. Mona who runs Casa do Mar is very friendly and helpful. If your looking for that, Casa do Mar is the perfect place to be. If you‘re looking for the luxury of a five star hotel, you better go somewhere else.

United StatesThe rooms in this house are not all alike. We occupied the lower rooms looking out onto the ocean with our own little patios, and this was wonderful. The rooms are comfortable and clean with ample room, table with chairs and storage. The bathroom layout is efficient. We had access to the kitchen and common area and outdoor patio and yoga room, and we enjoyed all of them. The breakfast was wonderful: breads, eggs, meats, cheeses, fruit. The staff was knowledgeable and helpful. Just a walk to the edge of the property and one can walk along the shoreline promenade into town. The biggest challenge was finding how to drive to the property as Google maps didn't quite get us to the right spot.

SloveniaGreat 4 night stay for 2 couples spending 3 weeks in the Azores. A little tricky to find using Google maps. Ample parking, once we found it!! Easy walk to town along the ocean. Large grocery store and tasty restaurants all within walking distance. We enjoyed use of the kitchen for a couple simple dinners.

ItalyOn booking should be better described the accommodation. Like i.e., there is a time schedule for the hot water, the rooms are not tidy up during the stay and you have to take care of the plates and cutlery after breakfast... All of these things are absolutely ok, but it would be better knowing them in advance.
The position is absolutely amazing, just in front of the ocean, looking towards Faial.
