How guest reviews work
Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We use a weighted review system which means that the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
- Politically sensitive comments
- Promotional content
- Illegal activities
- Personal or sensitive information (e.g. emails, phone numbers or credit card info)
- Swear words, sexual references, hate speech, discriminatory remarks, threats, or references to violence
- Spam and fake content
- Animal cruelty
- Impersonation (e.g. if the writer is claiming to be someone else)
- Any violation of our review guidelines.
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
Guidelines and standards for Reviews
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.

Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.

Verified reviewWe thought the staff were very friendly and liked the location of this fun and quirky hotel. The breakfast was very good with a great selection of hot and cold foods and all the staff were helpful and friendly. This hotel has a great vibe and is in a good location for exploring Porto.
Nothing, there was nothing to complain about. Maybe a couple more towels in the bathroom and some flannels would have been useful.

Verified reviewLocation is nice. Downtrodden is very cool. Right across from a noisy bar but the garden room wasn't noisy.
Breakfast was very underwhelming, understaffed, hot food was a lump of scrambled eggs. Felt like it was constantly empty. And tables weren't reset. The two Staff were just overwhelmed by 50 covers at a time. It's an expensive hotel and really quite disappointing for the price. Rooms are nice but skip the Breakfast.

Verified reviewI loved this hotel. It’s fun, it’s funky, it’s friendly, it’s comfortable. Loved it! The staff is great, the breakfast is lovely and they offer free 4 o’clock tea, as well as a glass of porto and 10% off food. Clean modern rooms, plenty of space, lovely communal areas. The location is also excellent.
Oh, well, the wallpaper in the elevator is slightly peeling off, the grass could be real in the garden and the people outside could just stay at home and not shout all night (closed windows provide excellent soundproofing by the way), but this is me counting the three things I did not “like”. Honestly, this is a great hotel and I will stay again!

Verified reviewIt's the second time I stayed at Chic&Basic and it's seriously my go to place whenever I am in Porto. The staff is the NICEST, everyone is happily serving you and making sure you are having the best experience. The rooms are spacious enough, the balconies amazing to chill at after a whole day of sightseeing and the beds and bedsheets suuuper comfy. The variety at the breakfast (with vegan options available) is amazing and very tasty. The decoration of the hotel itself is amusing. The location is top-notch to walk around the main areas of Porto. I can't recommend this hotel enough!!

Verified reviewOverall, the hotel was really nice. The location was good - it was very central & most of our activities were walking distance. They have a nice outdoor sitting area, a lovely bar too. Staff were really friendly, they made me & my 2 friends feel really welcome. Small things like collecting free water bottles from reception desk after your complimentary one in room had run out was a huge plus too. Really nice touch - as your not having to spend so much of your money on buying bottled water from outside hotel room. Plus I also loved the fact that Check-Out was 12pm - less stress in the morning of Check-Out as you've got more time
My one fault with the hotel room was the bathroom set up. Me & friend were sharing a room. the shower was one seperate cubicle & the toilet another seperate cubicle. With a large sink & mirror in the middle of both cubicles. Having seperate toilet & shower wouldn't have been such an issue was it not for the fact both cubicles were made of glass glass walls! Glass was tapered glass but it was still see-through!! Like why not just have a typical bathroom with solid walls for crying out loud! And the bed was directly faced in front of both glass cubicles so no privacy given. Me & my friend were naturally really respesctful of each other & managed the bathroom situation by taking it turns to use facilities & looking away when one person went to shower/toilet. Apart from that, the room was lovely .....but I cannot stress what a let down the bathroom/shower/toilet situation was. It's fine for solo travellers or a married couple but for friends sharing ? A Big No. It's a shame as apart from hotel room bathroom set up, everything else about the hotel was lovely

Verified reviewEverything was just perfect, really, this hotel, this team knows how to do this! We booked the top floor terrace room, outside noise was okay there! Extra sweet from the staff that we got presents (wine, cake) during our stay! Breakfast is absolutely perfect, lots of choices. The hotel location is great, the area is packed with nice local restaurants, bars, a bit less tourist-filled!
Seagulls… they are sooo loud at night, if your room is on the top floor, you need airplugs! but of course it’s not the hotel’s fault! :)

Verified reviewThe staff were very kind and friendly especially on our arrival. I liked my room and the balcony i had. The garden area was lovely. The receptionist on arrival was very sweet and gave us port and nibbles and gave us some recommendations on a map of places to visit during our stay in Porto. She was very kind and accommodating as were all the staff.
I think the breakfast station could be kept more warm especially the eggs, beans and other warm bits. Otherwise, breakfast was nice and had a decent variety.
