How guest reviews work
Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We use a weighted review system which means that the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
- Politically sensitive comments
- Promotional content
- Illegal activities
- Personal or sensitive information (e.g. emails, phone numbers or credit card info)
- Swear words, sexual references, hate speech, discriminatory remarks, threats, or references to violence
- Spam and fake content
- Animal cruelty
- Impersonation (e.g. if the writer is claiming to be someone else)
- Any violation of our review guidelines.
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
Guidelines and standards for Reviews
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options may be available (by type of traveller, by score, etc.).

It was really too too dirty

Verified reviewThe price was the main factor. There is a nice breakfast.
The place has no WiFi. As the quality of the building is very poor, the warmth of the father and daughter running the place is compensating. For this quality of a place you’d pay about 3 USD in Indonesia.

It was very unclean & I found bedbugs (although this was mitigated by a sheet that was provided)

Verified reviewThe owner didn't give me time or opportunity to like anything.
If you want to avoid being stranded for the night, stay away from this place. Despite having a reservation made a few months in advance, the owner first refused me to check in and said that there were no available beds. And it seems that he knew that earlier, but didn't even try to write to me. Apparently, he saved such important news for my arrival at the hostel. He was rude and unhelpful, making no effort to resolve the situation and essentially left me out on the street in a foreign country.

Verified reviewThere are many other hostels in the area to much higher standards at better prices (search Daterra). This is low effort and generally grimy and ill-cared for place.

Verified reviewThe host was ok.
1. The bedsheet was a bit dirty, so I asked the host to change, but did not change, so I had to cover it with the blanket, and getting cold at midnight.; 2. The toilet faucet was not clean with no hand washing liquid. 3. I was also disappointed on the breakfast, that it can be taken at 8:00-9:00AM, but 8:15AM passed and there was no breakfast, as I should leave earlier.

Verified reviewWanted to try something different and this place attracts a fascinating mix of people from around the world. Real old school sharehouse feel. Incredibly cheap. Bathroom looks old but actually shower pressure is fantastic. Air conditioning in my room.
No wifi. Some beds extremely hard with old worn out mattresses- back sore after a night there. Some areas were unpaved so one had to walk through a muddy dirt area to get get to a dorm. Not near any major amenities- have to walk 15-20 minutes to reach the shopping mall (or take the local share taxis if there is room in them, often there is not)

Verified reviewThe place need a some deepncleaning and renovation. The bed is hard. The guys does everything to be nice and kind but it really should improve a bit. The bed is rock hard, the mattress is 2 inches thin and the AC insufficient. It’s a bargain per se, close to the airport and easily accessibile with number 9 Mikrolet… but that’s all.

Verified reviewThe location was nice. Walking distance from Timor Plaza, Dili's biggest (and perhaps the only) mall. Microlet (public minibus) no. 9 also pass by near the hostel, making it convinient to go to other places using public transport. The staff were helpful and friendly.
There was a road construction when I stayed there March 2025.

Verified reviewThis is a fabulous place. Like the real backpackers for real travellers, like from old times. Super friendly, cozy, functional, perfect location. Highly recommended.
There is nothing not to like. As long as you come here expecting travelers hostel (and not 4* hotel), you will be happy.

Verified reviewThe staff was really friendly and helpful. They helped me to book a motorbike and had a lot of knowledge about how to get around town.
It was really dirty. The room was somewhat clean, but there were lots of fliers and papers left behind from previous travelers, and it was dusty in the closet. A wander through the kitchen unveiled dirty dishes, the pots and pans were uncleanably gross and they provide free water jug, but if you look at the straw inside of it, it’s covered in mold. The bathroom has never been cleaned, like ever. And you had to hold the shower nozzle because there’s no latch for it on the wall, and there’s only 1 shower room for the entire place which means you are often waiting to use it. This place has so much potential, it needs more care and cleaning though. I have travelled all over Asia, even India and Pakistan, but this place wins the award for the top two dirtiest places I’ve ever stayed.

Verified reviewFriendly owner who allowed brief generous use of hotspot on his phone for wifi access in sitting room. Good walk to Timor Plaza with food, supermarket options.
Could not stay long in sitting room as had allergic reaction to the cats, irrespective of whether they were there (admittedly my problem!) No wifi. My room (2 I think) ceiling fan too high to get cooling effect. And straight after shower immediately hot and sweaty. Loud adjacent kitchen noises from 6 in morning, I think from other guests.

Could have used more charging outlets in the dorm room if I'm being nitpicky, plus the metal bunks were squeeky and swayed, but that's really it

The saying "You get what you paid for" is true - the cheapest is not always the best! I don't need hyper comfort but sleeping on such a thin mattress that you actually sleep on the floor is lowest standard I ever had. No mosquito nets either. Had my own and when I moved the bed to attach it I saw that they never brushed under the bed!!!! Owner mostly slept on the couch.... one guest missed his ferry due to nobody being there when he arrived! Breakfast is (either half or very small) egg with a slice of toast - just to say *breakfast included* it's a sad statement!

Verified reviewFriendly and helpful owner, give lots of tips about places to visit, where to eat, helped to rent bike. Also good place to meet fellow travellers. Good value for money compared to other accommodation in Dili
Rooms are old and need some renovation but nothing unexpected as can be seen in the photos

Verified reviewWas a very pleasant stay. The staff were lovely and the room was nice and cool.
I found Dili difficult to navigate without my own transportation, but the hostel is on the number 9 microtel route (just flag them down anywhere and pay the 25c when you get off). Timor plaza was also walking distance away which is handy, can catch many microtels heading to centre there.
