How guest reviews work
Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We use a weighted review system which means that the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
- Politically sensitive comments
- Promotional content
- Illegal activities
- Personal or sensitive information (e.g. emails, phone numbers or credit card info)
- Swear words, sexual references, hate speech, discriminatory remarks, threats, or references to violence
- Spam and fake content
- Animal cruelty
- Impersonation (e.g. if the writer is claiming to be someone else)
- Any violation of our review guidelines.
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
Guidelines and standards for Reviews
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options may be available (by type of traveller, by score, etc.).

Verified reviewGreat location if you want to be in the hustle and bustle of Nungwi and the staff were lovely!
The showers are salt water and sometimes without hot. The laundry service was cheap but again the water ruined some of our clothes.

Verified reviewNothing to like
Cats everywhere, which causes pet hairs to be everywhere including chairs. It’s not ideal if your allergic to pets, there’s visible cracks in the doors that allow mosquitoes in your room all night, there’s no switch for the fan in the room so you have to use to use the AC, there’s no hot water either
Dear Guest, Thank you for your feedback. Yes, we do have cats on the property — they are peaceful and, like in many hotels on the island, live nearby. Hot water is always available in our hotel, as each room is equipped with a private boiler. All boilers are fully functional, and if you experience any issues, our reception team is always here to assist. Fan switches are located near the beds and are in working order. If you couldn’t find them right away, we would have been happy to help — just let us know. Room cleaning is done daily, and we also carry out regular disinfection against insects and mosquitoes to ensure your comfort. We’re sorry if something affected your stay, but we truly hope you still took warm memories of Zanzibar with you. Best regards, *Max Hotel Nungwi Team*

Verified reviewI chose this place for its convenient location and competitive price in the area. The location was good - if you have an organised day trip or excursion, most depart from Mama Mia, which is just a short walk away.
1. Salt water in both the tap and the shower! Never seen this before and it was a terrible experience (2. not even a bottled water provided to wash you teeth) 3. Only one body towel was provided for two guests, and it had a really unpleasant smell, leaving you feeling less clean after a shower. No hand towels were provided. 4. The reception person was never at the reception - when I checked in, a lady let me in saying her boss was minutes away - I never got to see them since I aimed to leave for an 8am excursion, at which time, the reception person had not arrived and I had to wait for them to arrive, the lady was very unfriendly. I would definitely avoid staying here again for this price, I really hope this review helps management change this as it’s a competing price for the zone, good location but highly over priced and the above should not be acceptable at any price point.
Hello! Thank you for your review, I would like to note that you spent only 12 hours in our hotel, arriving at 8 pm and leaving in the morning. Yes, we do not have fresh water in the shower, since we have our own well, we believe that using such water is more environmentally friendly and safer for the health of our guests, do not forget that you came to Africa. Free drinking water is in the coolers at the reception and in the breakfast area, it is unlimited, there were glasses for it in your room and you could brush your teeth with it. You had an open correspondence with the hotel, you could have said that there was only one towel in your room and we would have added more towels to you very quickly, sorry for this. In addition, you communicated with the manager (who was allegedly never at the reception), you were very nice to him and asked to keep your luggage until 5 pm. You didn't tell him about the problems that our hotel needs to fix, but only said that you will definitely come back to us again. Anyway, thanks for the feedback, and have a wonderful holiday in Zanzibar 🌴🌴🌴 In many hotels you will see non-fresh water in the shower, because we are on an island where there is no central water supply. You will also encounter problems with power outages, poor water pressure (but not in our hotel) and other nuances of a holiday in Zanzibar, but this is Africa and we hope that you will love it! All the best! Max Hotel Team

Verified reviewThe hotel has a perfect central location in Nungwi, with many cafes, bars, shops, and more nearby. Despite this, the street where the hotel is situated is quiet. The atmosphere at the hotel is calm and comfortable. At the reception, I was able to buy a SIM card at a reasonable price, because outside the hotel they tried to sell me a SIM card for three times the price, which was outrageous. The water in the shower is quite salty, but it didn't cause me any discomfort. They have their own water well, which I found to be excellent, and I am confident that the water is safe for my health. They provided drinking water for brushing teeth. By the way, the drinking water was available in unlimited quantities and was free of charge. The breakfast was good. The staff helped me get around Nungwi and gave me a lot of useful advice. I parked my rental car near the hotel without any issues. I can recommend this hotel if you are on a tight budget and do not require luxury.
Thank you Rosi! It's great to hear your kind feedback! Max Hotel Team

Verified reviewGreat experience. This was the only hotel in Zanzibar out of the five I booked that had really good water pressure! The water was also hot and came on instantly—you didn't have to wait or adjust the shower like in other hotels. Only at the end of my vacation in Zanzibar, staying at Max Hotel, was I able to have a proper shower, which is amazing... The breakfast was delicious. My stay at the hotel lasted only one night, and I deeply regretted not booking more nights at Max... It's time for me to head home. Zanzibar is a very beautiful island.

Verified reviewLoved the proximity of the property from the beach and other useful places. The property is spacious and have lots of trees and dedicated small sofa and table outside the room to relax and listen to birda chirping all day. Breakfast is filling and has variety to choose from. Staff is friendly especially the ladies who clean the rooms regularly. They are super hospitable and makes the room like new. I liked majority of the things in the property. They also provide drinking water.
Constructive crticism: All the faucets in the property release salt water for use and has a distinct rusty odour to it (Probably from the well it is stored in). So even after shower it feels like you have salt all over your body. Brushing the teeth becomes a problem and taking a shower with cuts and bruises if you have hiked before will be another problem. The water gets clogged in the bathroom after shower. Only the toilet needs some maintenance and proper drainage. Otherwise the room is cosy and spacious. Another issue i faced is not having window panes in any of the rooms. The outside voices might disturb you in the morning while sleeping. I was traveling solo. But the guest just right infornt of my room were a couple. Everyone in the property could hear all kinds of voices from their room. So if you are a couple on your honeymoon and need some privacy please avoid.
Dear Nida! Thank you very much for your review! It was our pleasure to take care of you! For our future guests we would like to draw your attention to the following thing - all our rooms have mosquito nets on the windows as well as glass. But some guests like to open the windows for fresh air, now in Zanzibar there is no strong heat and not all guests like to use AC. Sorry for the sounds you accidentally heard from your neighbors. Best regards, Max Hotel

Verified reviewI had a great night's sleep, my room was clean and the water pressure was strong! And I was finally able to wash myself with hot water!!! In other hotels the water was barely warm. Breakfast was good and served in a very nice place decorated with shells! The free drinking water was also nice. The place matches the description. I will be back Mr Dickson was very helpful!
