How guest reviews work
Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We use a weighted review system which means that the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
- Politically sensitive comments
- Promotional content
- Illegal activities
- Personal or sensitive information (e.g. emails, phone numbers or credit card info)
- Swear words, sexual references, hate speech, discriminatory remarks, threats, or references to violence
- Spam and fake content
- Animal cruelty
- Impersonation (e.g. if the writer is claiming to be someone else)
- Any violation of our review guidelines.
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
Guidelines and standards for Reviews
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. The breakfast was expensive and horrible. Save your money and get breakfast somewhere else. Also, the room smelled a little musty but being able to open the windows was awesome!

Very over priced, AC broken, Wifi did not work, no USB connections, staff uninterested, no breakfast available. Room was next to exit where all staff used to smoke dope so constant noise and smell of marijuana!

This certainly is not our intention. We take all reported maintenance issues with seriousness and move promptly to correct any issues we have been made aware of, I will be sure to have our property management team ensure this was done. Your room was a pet room. For the convenience of pet owners, these rooms are placed by our rear exit which leads to a grassy pet area. As it is an exit, it is sometimes used by guests for smoking. It is not an area that is used by the staff, and I am unaware that has been done so, but I am will be sure to reiterate this policy. Thank you again for bringing your concerns to our attention.

While neither have a walk in shower, our accessible rooms are equipped with larger bathrooms and grab bars by the rub and toilet. It does look like your card was charged twice in error and that a refund was issued immediately. While charges seem to go through right away, refunds usually take at least 72 hours to show on accounts. This would not be something we would have any control over. I do apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused you. Of course, that would not have been our intention. I hope this occurrence did not put a damper on your stay and I hope will see you again the next time you are in the Gardner area to allow us a chance to prove our dedication to hospitality.

Verified reviewWe didn't have the breakfast, so can't comment on that. The location was perfect for us as it was close to our family. But there are so few hotels in that area to choose from that we are amazed more people don't stay there. We really feel at home when we are there. Great place.

Verified reviewI came off the Midstate trail after 4 days of solo hiking and camping and the staff really took care of me and my sore and tired body. They showed me to the laundry, the hot tub and the restaurant, where I had an excellent meal. Best sleep in that awesomely appointed room. The hotel is gorgeous. I will make this my annual finishing point for some TLC after a long hike.
Your photos online do not do justice to the property. Please show off a bit online and run some more marketing. People need to know more about The Colonial Hotel.

There was no breakfast buffet and we had to pay for morning coffee and toiletries that other hotels offer complimentary And the pool water was ice cold !!! 🥶🥶🥶🤢🤢🤢

Fire alarms went off at 6 am. Which has never happened there. I mentioned it to the staff when checking out and the said it was a weird thing. I feel like they should have offered a discount on the next stay or something. We got a room to get away from all the noise and to be able to sleep in. The fire alarms going off made that difficult. It wasn’t a busy night so offering a discount to anyone that mentioned the fire alarm shouldn’t have been a problem.

The hot tub did not get hot, it was lukewarm. In addition, some of the jets in the hot tub were shooting out cold water.
I am happy to hear you enjoyed your stay Anastasia. I am sorry that you did not find our hot tub settings to your liking. We have it set to the Board of Health recommendations which is between 100 and 102 degrees. We check this often to ensure this is what the temperature is. While we understand that many of our guests would prefer a higher setting, we do have to keep in mind the health and comfort of all of our guests. I have investigated your issue and as far as I can tell, you never brought this matter to our attention during your stay. If you had, we likely would have been able to address it at the time. Our front desk reported the issue to our housekeeping manager upon your departure who checked the shower which seemed to be working properly and we have received no other complaints. I do understand your frustrations but as we did not have the opportunity to assist you during your stay and there appears to have been no maintenance issue, no compensation will be given.
