How guest reviews work
Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We use a weighted review system which means that the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
- Politically sensitive comments
- Promotional content
- Illegal activities
- Personal or sensitive information (e.g. emails, phone numbers or credit card info)
- Swear words, sexual references, hate speech, discriminatory remarks, threats, or references to violence
- Spam and fake content
- Animal cruelty
- Impersonation (e.g. if the writer is claiming to be someone else)
- Any violation of our review guidelines.
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
Guidelines and standards for Reviews
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options may be available (by type of traveller, by score, etc.).

Verified reviewThe property was located across from beach access, next to a breakfast spot and in walking distance to Washington street mall. Porch in front is nice common outdoor space. Awesome historical building with a lot of character.
It’s old and outdated. Knew this when booked so expected it. The porch is shared with outsiders that dine at the restaurant which is a conflict zone. The stairs to the rooms are only access, which is fine if your not toting too much.

Room was essentially on the 4th floor and there were a lot of steps. When returning from evening activities, there were no parking spaces left.

Verified reviewGreat location and great bagel/smoothie place downstairs, nice porch with chairs looking out. Beach is right across the street and the hotel has beach towel rentals. Rooms were cleaned daily but usually not until past noon. Room is a good size for 2 people and I loved how there were many mirrors which made getting ready at the same time easier. I also liked that there were two of those things you can set your luggage on. Staff were mostly friendly some people at the front desk were nice especially the nice lady who checked us in. She asked if we would like a storage shelf hanger hung up in our room since the closet space was small and set it up for us. Our housekeeper did a good job tiding the rooms. The room had like 3 trash cans I was impressed but I do think that since the hotel emphasizes recycling they should just designate one of the three as a recycling only bin instead of asking us to keep it out of the bin entirely. Also we had a little window AC. There was also a big AC above the room door on the wall but we couldn't find the remote so we assumed it wasn't for us to use. Window AC worked well but it is noisy. It doesn't bother me as I lived in Boston and survived off of these kinds of ACs but if you're a guest who is sensitive to sound it could bother you
Definitely pricey but so is entire Cape May. Only thing I'd say is our bathroom had some 5 or 6 ants pop up over the 3 nights we stayed there. I think there must be an opening somewhere in the bathroom near the sink but personally it didn't bother me we were barely in the room anyways and they were never in the actual bedroom.

Verified reviewYou are clearly paying for the location at the Hotel Macomber, which is just across the street from the beach, the arcade, mini golf, Kohr Bros, and several restaurants. We enjoyed being able to roll out of bed in the morning, walk a few blocks to Uncle Bill's for pancakes, stroll back, pick up our beach chairs, and head over to the beach for the day. The convenience cannot be beat. Beyond the location, the other positive aspect of the Hotel Macomber to me is its gracious front porch where you can sit in a rocking chair and watch the world go by.
Other than the location and the porch, this hotel is lacking in amenities and customer service. There isn't even a bathroom that guests can use in the lobby; when I checked out, I asked where the restroom was, and I was told the only bathrooms were in the guest rooms, I had to go down to the bagel place on the ground floor to use their bathroom! That's just ridiculous. There is also no place to refill a water bottle or any other type of amenity, such as an outdoor faucet to rinse off sandy feet, chairs, etc. Overall, the hotel feels very dated, and not in a good way. Our bathroom was VERY small and dark, and the shower handle had black mold growing inside it. The hotel seems to pride itself on its inaccessibility to individuals with physical impairments, making it very clear that there is NO elevator and that there are many stairs to be climbed. The lobby is in need of an update, as are the hallways. (Updated lighting, fresh paint, and new rugs can go a long way.) Our room was a decent size and clean, but it did not make great use of the space there was. The chairs in the room looked like they came from an old dining set, and the only bureau in the room was wicker with drawers that either got stuck or didn't close. There just doesn't seem to be a whole lot of care put into the upkeep of this hotel, especially given the price. The owners seem to be doing the bare minimum, which they can get away with because the location is so good.
Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback. While we’re glad to hear you enjoyed our location and porch, we’re sorry to learn that other aspects of your stay did not meet your expectations. We’d like to clarify a few points that may help provide some context. Our hotel is a registered historic building, built over 100 years ago. We are not permitted to make certain structural changes, including the addition of elevators, as they would compromise the building’s historic integrity. This is something we’re very transparent about in our booking process. Regarding the lack of a lobby restroom: unfortunately, our historic floor plan simply doesn’t provide the space for one. This isn’t an oversight, but rather a limitation of the original building design, which we are required to preserve. We do our best to accommodate all guest needs within these constraints. We also want to address the comment about the building's condition. We take maintenance and upkeep very seriously and, in fact, repaint the entire building every year. However, by late summer — the tail end of a long, busy season — some wear is inevitable, especially in high traffic areas. That said, our team works diligently to keep things clean, functional, and as fresh as possible throughout the season. Ultimately, we recognize that historic hotels aren’t for everyone, and we hope you’ll consider whether a modern property might be a better match for your travel style in the future. That said, we’re grateful you stayed with us, and we wish you all the best on your future travels.

Verified reviewExcellent location & friendly staff. Overall very clean and maintained. Bagel time was packed and plenty of dining locations nearby. Easy walk to town for people watching and directly across from beach entry point and tag purchase stand ($10). Adequate parking in side lot and rear.
Room could have been cleaned better. Found dust and food wrappers between bed and hallway wall. Small ants in bathroom on floor. Air conditioning was robust to the point of being cold. Be prepared to walk up 4 flights if that is where your room is.
