How guest reviews work
Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We use a weighted review system which means that the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
- Politically sensitive comments
- Promotional content
- Illegal activities
- Personal or sensitive information (e.g. emails, phone numbers or credit card info)
- Swear words, sexual references, hate speech, discriminatory remarks, threats, or references to violence
- Spam and fake content
- Animal cruelty
- Impersonation (e.g. if the writer is claiming to be someone else)
- Any violation of our review guidelines.
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
Guidelines and standards for Reviews
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options may be available (by type of traveller, by score, etc.).

Verified reviewNice location, easy walk to restaurants, shops and water front.
Old style bed frame stuck out at the bottom causing multiple occasions of stubbed toes. No exercise facilities.
Thank you, Richard, for your feedback! We're sorry to hear about the bed frame. While The St. James doesn’t have an on-site fitness center; guests are welcome to use the full facilities at the Red Wing Family YMCA just down the street!

The noise that we heard all night long Cars squealing tires, honking horns Trains and Sirens We hardly got any sleep This was Terrible, especially for the price I paid
Thank you for taking the time to give us some feedback from your recent stay. We are so sorry that there were some inconsiderate people outside the hotel disturbing your sleep. We do our best to call the local authorities when this happens. We are installing new windows in the hotel which will better abate these noises. The SJH Team

Verified reviewI believe the room we got was set aside for booking agencies, because I felt it was below standards. No pictures on the walls. A narrow bed. The shower curtain was all rust along the bottom. Door was hard to shut. Maya was not overly welcoming. I passed by the front desk 4 times only to see her face glued to her cell phone. I believe I was a victim of price gouging for this River City Days weekend. We were very disappointed.

Verified reviewThe hotel was charming and the restaurant, "Scarlett" was fabulous. Hannah, the gal at the desk when we checked in was very helpful & super friendly. She went above and beyond to help us. Loved her! We loved the fact that we could sit in the library room with the fireplace and get some work/planning done. That was a huge plus!!
Bed was uncomfortable. You shouldn't feel the rim of a bed when you sit on the edge. Otherwise, everything was great except the day we left, a maintenance man was painting our door and trim. When I walked out of the room, I got paint on me and had to go back into the room to wash it off. It was not his fault, he didn't know the room was occupied. He was very apologetic. AGAIN, This was not his fault. I felt the ladies at the front desk really didn't care that his happened. I would have liked to have been offered a discount or a discount for a future stay...I wouldn't have probably accepted it...but an offer would show integrity of your establishment and that you value your patrons.
Thank you for taking the time to share your experience with us. We truly appreciate your feedback. We are happy you enjoyed the hotel, Scarlet Kitchen & Bar, and the Library. The library is a popular area of the hotel that guests enjoy year round. We are sorry to hear that your bed was uncomfortable, we have let our management team know and they will be assessing it's replacement. We are also sorry for the paint issue, our maintenance team should not have been painting when guests are occupying the room and we should have been more empathic to your situation. We have let the Director of this department know of the issue and will address this matter. If you would like to discuss this further please reach out to info@st-james-hotel.com We do hope to see you again. Thank you The SJH Team

Verified reviewFriendly staff, clean, comfortable rooms. Bed was very comfy! Excellent dining options and shopping close by. Especially loved our experience at The Port restaurant, a memorable place!
The shower water pressure was low, and the bathroom could be updated. The trains woke us up periodically. The room, while clean and nice, had a bit of an odor. The room was bug free. However, there were a prolific amount of insects on the outside of the building. They could clean that up a bit, so the outside space is as inviting as the inside.
Thank you so much for the kind review. We are so glad you enjoyed your stay both in the hotel and at The Port. I have let our maintenance team know about the water pressure of you room, we apologize for this. Unfortunately the trains at this time, are unavoidable due to a major crossing behind the hotel. As for the odor in the room we have informed the housekeeping staff to ensure this is addressed. Now for the insects, being next to the Mississippi has its advantages and disadvantages. The beauty of the river is wonderful however, with a healthy river comes a mayfly hatch. This happens every year and can occur 1 to 4 times. Millions of them swarm the area and are attracted to lights. We do try to get the lights turned off around the hotel to mitigate the numbers however our proximity to the river we can only do so much. We do wipe down the windows once the hatch is done. Then wait for the next one! I hope this helps and we hope to see you again soon! The SJH Team

Cob webs in room. No refrigerator in room. More vegetable options with meal. Steak was okay but really not any better than Texas Rodehouse.
Thank you for taking the time to share your experience from you recent stay. We truly appreciate your feedback and are sorry to hear your stay did not meet your expectations. We sincerely apologize for the state of your room, certainly fell short in our duties and the housekeeping staff has been informed of the situation to make sure it does not reoccur. We do not have refrigerators in the rooms due to the historic nature of the hotel. We do have some on hand should you need one for medical purposes. I am unsure of which restaurants you dined in but our culinary team prides itself on quality and flavor. I have relayed your comments to our Executive Chef. We do hope you will come see us again. We are delighted you enjoyed the historic nature of our hotel and hope you were able to participate in the self guided tour on our 150th year.
