How guest reviews work
Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We use a weighted review system which means that the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
- Politically sensitive comments
- Promotional content
- Illegal activities
- Personal or sensitive information (e.g. emails, phone numbers or credit card info)
- Swear words, sexual references, hate speech, discriminatory remarks, threats, or references to violence
- Spam and fake content
- Animal cruelty
- Impersonation (e.g. if the writer is claiming to be someone else)
- Any violation of our review guidelines.
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
Guidelines and standards for Reviews
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.

Verified reviewDidn't know what to expect from a hotel where there was no staff on site. I was blown away! For an area with such limited space it is amazing & beautifully done. The room was clean with a very modern feel to it. Lots of light and even a small balcony. The "chips" they left for me bought a round of drinks at the bar downstairs. The rosemary fries and dipping sauce are delicious! The rooftop is equally beautiful and relaxing. A special shout out to Ryan! We only communicated via text, but he was awesome! I left something behind and texted him at 2:30AM 4 days after I left. I was shocked to get an immediate response from him! He assured me he would locate my lost item and get it back to me. We texted back & forth until 3:15AM. Who does that? That is incredible service and absolutely elevated my guest experience. Thank you, Ryan! You're a Rockstar! I look forward to staying at the Hotel Castro again!

Room 304 at the back of the building. No street noise but vent filter at the back of the building ran 24/7. Loud engine noise not ideal if you just want peace and quiet. Could hear neighbors having a domestic argument.

The room is nice and comfortable, just very small, with not much living space, but it has a beautiful view and is equipped with everything you need. Moreover, the shower is very spacious and large. I'm not used to online and self-managed check-ins and check-outs, but I must say that I had a great experience—everything went perfectly. Thank you!

No room for luggage. No staff to talk to. We were promised a bigger room but the property manager “I will be back in a few minutes” never got back to us. Since there is no lobby, no reception and no staff, we had to call Kasa in LOS Angeles to solve our problems. Finally, we had 2 TV sets in the room but only 1 remote control.

Verified reviewthe location was amazing! it was in the heart of the castro but not directly on the street so it wasn’t as loud and active. it felt safe and clean. we got the bowie room and i loved that it was in the back of the building so even more privacy and less noise than if you got a room in the front. the bed was amazing (king deluxe) and having a nice tv with streaming services was relaxing. the shower was lovely tho small. the sink faucet was so low you can’t fill anything up with it (we used the shower head to fill our coffee kettle). easy to get around SF from this location. you store your luggage next door at hansens laundry. the owner was so kind and saw that we loved tea and gifted us with a herbal tea from his own collection. truly a gem and i would stay here again and again 🤍

Verified reviewthe checkin with virtual desk was awful. Need to forward checkin instruction prior to arrival, as I was required to submit confidential info as I was checking in, and had no idea if it was a scam or what asking for my cr card, dr license, etc.. with NO WARNING.
the whole virtual experience was strressful and calling to a number where no one picked for after 15 minutes, as I waste away in the lobby of this lodging-cant call it a hotel

This place has no reception, and you need to pre register documents...We booked 2 rooms and only got one link, so getting codes for second room was a hassle Don't expect their support number to answer quickly Also no left luggage facility, cafe they mention to leave luggage isn't always open, also UPS option closes at 5pm

Verified reviewThe location was the best part. The self-service piece was neat, but at times I missed having a lobby area. Because it was run without staff it felt heavily surveilled with cameras at every and all corners of the hall, entrance, roof deck which felt a little bit of an intrusion. The room was much smaller than expected, and while marketed as a suite, it felt more crowded and congested than a standard room. Also there was not a true kitchenette, with no actual fridge (just a lined open drawer for cold items) and no microwave.
The location, roof deck, and decor were the best parts and made up for some other areas to justify the cost.
