Read more– opens a dialog boxEach review score is between 1 and 10. To get the overall score you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of them. We use a weighted review system, which means the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. Guests can also give separate “subscores” in crucial areas like location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value, and free Wifi. Note that guests submit their subscores and overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an accommodation that you booked through our platform if you stayed there, or if you got to the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialize in detecting fake reviews submitted to our platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team so that our fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we'd publish every review we get, positive and negative. However, we won’t display any reviews that include or refer to (among other things):
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out. We may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old, or if the accommodation has a change of ownership.
An accommodation can reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (e.g. language, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). You can sort and/or filter them by time of year, review score, and more.
Sometimes we show external review scores from other well-known travel websites, but make it clear when we do this.
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly, without limiting expression or strong opinions. They're also applicable regardless of the comment's tone.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include hate speech, discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, or the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and other similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties, and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options might be available (by type of traveler, by score, etc...).

United StatesIt is not a dislike, but guests might want to be aware that the kitchen is outdoors on a covered lanai. It is perfect for al fresco breakfasts looking out over the "jungle".
The location is terrific for exploring the east side of Hawaii and Volcanoes National Park. Patrick is a wonderful host; super helpful and available to answer questions, give recommendations, and just exude hospitality! The property is located off a quiet street and we felt we were in a comfortable cottage in the middle of a jungle! The frog serenade took a little getting used to at night, but we found it added to the ambiance! We felt it was an excellent value for lodging. Staying at the Red Cottage did feel like an authentic experience of Hawaiian life.

SpainHow remote the location actually is. Without a car reaching the location is a 2.5 mile hike from the regular bus stop. There is a closer bus to Keeau (0.3 miles) but it only goes in the morning. We suggest renting a car as we did for an optimal experience!
The wonderful feeling as if you are existing in paradise. Patrick was the friendliest and nicest guy you could ever imagine having as a host. His stories are truly legendary! Note: as this is in the rainforest, you will hear the lovely sounds of the Puerto Rican tree frogs each and every night. This is only for nature lovers who are relaxed by the sounds of the jungle! Expect to regularly see the families of geckos who help out along with the tree frogs to eat many of the flies and mosquitoes! 🤩🦎🐸 Finally there's Queenie the hen who will likely say hi at least once during your stay! 🐔

United StatesIt was beyond our expectation. We felt at home.
Patrick was communicative from the start. Our flight was late , 11:47pm, and he accommodated us making sure we were settled in well. This Red Cottage was so comfortable like a home away from home. So much aloha. We loved our stay and will return. Thank you Patrick.

United States- Something seemed to have gone wrong with the cleaning service. When we arrived we had to broom out the cottage because there was dirt on the floor. We mentioned to the host, and it seems something had gone wrong with the cleaning crew. - The advertised A/C is not really strong enough to cool down the room. We slept okay by using the natural breeze and ventilators to cool down the room at night.
Patrick the host is doing everything to make sure you have an interesting and fulfilling stay. He is fabulous, and it is a pleasure to talk to him and listen to his stories. The cottage is in a quiet neighbourhood and surrounded by nature. You will hear nothing but coquis and other animal sounds. Very relaxing. Full kitchen providing anything you might need.

AustraliaPatrick was the best host and was super accommodating, especially since we booked very last minute to escape a nightmare accommodation situation we had found ourselves in. Red cottage was stunning, comfortable, romantic and the bath was incredible. Don't even look anywhere else in the area, just do yourself a favour and book Red Cottage next time you're in Keaau or looking to stay near Hilo

HungaryWe had the best time in Patrick’s stay. The accommodation was perfect, close to nature, clean, well equipped in an amazing location. We loved all the details such as a vinyl player with Hawaiian songs. Patrick was a great host, he suggested local recommendations which made us see the ‘real Hawaii’. We would be happy to stay here again in the future.

United StatesWe recently had the pleasure of staying at a charming Hawaiian cottage, and can't recommend it enough! From the moment we arrived, we felt a sense of peace and tranquility in this secluded haven. The cottage itself is quaint, with a cozy atmosphere that made it feel like a home away from home. Complete with chickens, coqui frogs and a little pond! There is a record player with Hawaiian music to listen to as well. It gives nice relaxing vibes to the place. One of the highlights of our stay was the incredible coffee made by Patrick. What a nice surprise it was and a wonderful start to our day! Patrick was very nice to deal with and incredibly accommodating, ensuring that we had everything we needed for a comfortable stay. The cottage was clean and well-maintained, which added to the overall comfort. If you’re looking for a serene getaway in Hawaii, this cottage is the perfect choice!

United StatesPatrick sets the bar for hosts, and his place is the standard to which all bookings should aspire. You should feel lucky to get a chance to stay here. Let me tell you why. After coming down off a mountain after a hike, Patrick expedited cleaning to allow us to check in early (on Christmas Day), which was a boon to our tired bodies. Then he met us in the driveway with Irish cheer and showed us to our room, even starting the record player for us in a flourish of good will and hospitality. He regaled us with stories of coming to Hawaii and gave us innumerable suggestions on things to do while on the island (highly recommend planting a coconut on the black sand beach). After settling us in, he made himself scarce, and we had the magical place to ourselves. After a soak in the tub, we sat outside to drink a bottle of champagne and listen to nature (and more Hawaiian records). That night we slept like logs in the comfortable bed, and we awoke to a beautiful morning on the big island. He told us the big island was about the elements, and we had already seen fire (erupting volcano) and ice (summit of Mauna Loa), so we should see the wind meet the water on the cliffs of black sand beaches, which we did. Bottom line, this place is more than a stay, its an experience, and one that I highly recommend.

CanadaThis is an amazing adventure unlike anywhere else we have stayed on the Big Island. The accommodations are rustic and private and make you feel like you are in a jungle setting. When the sun has set, take your glass of wine and sit at the counter in the open air kitchen. The wildlife sounds are captivating. Thank you, Patrick, for a wonderful stay at the Red Cottage and for your captivating stories.

CanadaIt was as described and therefore, no issues.
Adorable little cottage in a quiet beautiful jungle. The pictures are accurate...there is an outdoor kitchen with lots of birds, frogs and chickens around to enjoy. The bedroom - bathroom are enclosed, so comfortable for sleeping. Patrick met us and provided an excellent overview. The little record player and records as well as the bowl of treats was a very thoughtful touch. Just ensure you are aware that you are 30 mins from Hilo and not too much around. This could be a positive for some.
