How guest reviews work
Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We use a weighted review system which means that the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
- Politically sensitive comments
- Promotional content
- Illegal activities
- Personal or sensitive information (e.g. emails, phone numbers or credit card info)
- Swear words, sexual references, hate speech, discriminatory remarks, threats, or references to violence
- Spam and fake content
- Animal cruelty
- Impersonation (e.g. if the writer is claiming to be someone else)
- Any violation of our review guidelines.
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
Guidelines and standards for Reviews
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.

The local restaurants are not very good and expensive. There is very little to do in the area outside of the national park. TV was very small which is needed given very little else to do in the area.

Verified reviewThe room was uniquly decorated and the grounds was beautiful. The bed was massive and really comfrotable. Had a wonderful stay and was lucky enough to be staying when the volcano erupted so we were able to quickly drive into the national park within 10 minutes.
Everything was great with the accommodation but prehaps a mini hob would be useful so we could cook simple meals. Though this wasn't the accommodation's fault the guests upstaris were very noisy throughout the night perhaps a sign reminding guests to be considerate of others and having a quiet time after 10pm.

A water filter at the reception would have been handy. Staff are not very quick to respond to queries but they do say that they are a small operation.

more facilities for cooking as this place is very remote and very little few places to eat or buy food. Also a bit tired looking outside if I was travelling on my own I would feel very vulnerable. No onsite personnel.

1) Room was tiny for the price we paid 2) shower stall is outdated and had mildew growing on the stone floor. I had to use rubber slippers to take a shower to avoid possible infection on my feet . My spouse chose not to bathe because the shower floor was unsanitary. 3) Maids did not clean up the shower before we arrived , leaving 2 wet used towels in the shower. 4) TV did not work the entire two days we were there. 5) Limited number of dishes , cups and utensils for two days , Only TWO total of each, requiring us to hand wash our dishes and utensils often for every meal we ate. 6) No microwave to heat our food. 7) Cozy Gas fireplace advertised on the website was unavailable for use. 8) Poor lighting in the room we rented at Chalet Kilauea 9) Only 7 small parking spaces. We had rented a suv and it was difficult to park in the small parking area provided for guests.

At Chalet Kilauea, all our bathrooms were recently remodeled and are cleaned thoroughly after each use, so we were surprised to hear about your concerns. Our rooms are designed for two guests, with supplies provided accordingly, including dish soap for your convenience. Each room is equipped with a microwave, so we’re unsure how that was missed. We checked and all our TVs are working as normal. We do not advertise gas fireplaces, so it is not unexpected that one was not available. Rest assured all rooms are equipped with electric heaters. With 5 rooms and 7 parking spaces, we find our parking to be sufficient for the property size. Finally, we regret that you did not contact us during your stay. Had you reached out, we could have addressed and remedied any issues promptly.

Verified reviewThe chalet was very unique. The grounds, plants and flowers were beautiful. The room was very spacious. I loved the table and the fact that the room had a microwave and dishes available for use. We picked up take out one night and were able to heat it up. The bathroom was huge and well appointed. I have never seen a shower that big!
I was concerned about the large step to get down to the bathroom. I left the light on so that I didn't trip getting up at night.
