How guest reviews work
Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We use a weighted review system which means that the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
- Politically sensitive comments
- Promotional content
- Illegal activities
- Personal or sensitive information (e.g. emails, phone numbers or credit card info)
- Swear words, sexual references, hate speech, discriminatory remarks, threats, or references to violence
- Spam and fake content
- Animal cruelty
- Impersonation (e.g. if the writer is claiming to be someone else)
- Any violation of our review guidelines.
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
Guidelines and standards for Reviews
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.

Verified reviewI loved everything! This place was a so clean and comfy, I will defs be back when I'm in JHB. Sharon was amazing, she even managed to arrange a ride home from the concert we attended. It is clear that they know what they are doing at 49 on Cherry. Its quiet and beautiful. I loved that you could do your own breakfast at your own leisure time and not have to rush and get up early just to have breakie.
That I couldn't stay longer.

Verified review49 on Cherry is perfect for a family stay. The spacious backyard/garden is the real highlight. Our little ones loved the trampoline and my husband even used the gas grill. Our only regret is that it was a bit too cold for us to use the large pool. Sharon was wonderful in letting us check in very early as we were on our way to Lion Park.
The suite was a tad smaller than what we are used to but there was room for everyone.
Hi Helena, thank you for the review! During the week we seem to fill up with business people so it is extra special to have families with children here over weekends. The trampoline is our secret weapon; - seems to help the children sleep VERY well :). The pool is definitely meant for summer even if our lovely sunny days make it look enticing. The upstairs 2 bedroom suite is a little smaller than the downstairs suite so we must be sure to book you in there if you come back to Johannesburg - unfortunately it was already occupied this visit. Verified reviewWe have just spent a wonderful week at 49 on Cherry. Sharon went out of her way to welcome us, and I don’t think we have slept in such comfortable beds with such quality linen before. I will be dreaming about those beds! Everything was spotless in our suite, laundry was done super fast, and the garden and trampoline a bonus. We highly recommend 49. Fast internet, secure property, and great facilities.

Verified reviewBreakfast concept is weird. We don't mind making our own breakfast, but not having a hob is challenging. Eggs in a microwave aren't great. Neighbours were a bit noisy
Hi Louise, the majority of our guests love the breakfast as it allows them to eat at whatever time suits THEM - be it early in the morning before rushing off to work, OR a flexible brunch whenever they choose to wake up while on holiday... Our suites are not self catering so the fridge microwave, egg boiler, toaster and kettle in the kitchenette are provided more for simple food prep and reheating. I'm sorry about the neighbours noisiness. Had you informed me at the time, I could have spoken to them. I hope your daughter enjoys the rest of her holiday. regards, Sharon

The children were so well behaved and considerate of others... while still being 'boys' and having fun! :) As for the Princess... well she RULED us as well as the whole family (we were all willing to serve her every command!!) Yup, no stove - our suites are not self catering although one can do a lot with the fridge, microwave oven, egg boiler, toaster and kettle. Next time - your Mom said you're coming back next year :) - include the breakfast and I'll show you the really good meals you can prepare. regards, Sharon

Verified reviewThe location is good and safe. Things like the malls are aways off but it's okay. Quiet street with a pool and the house itself is quite nice.
Honestly, place is great... only issue is service. 1. You carry your own luggage up and down the stairs so pack light 2. The manager is quite unhelpful unless she wants to help many gaps here. We even ordered Uber eats and when they buzzed all she did was say that SHE hadn't ordered anything yet you have several "apartments" with people why not ask us?! Thank God we were so hungry we were tracking them on the app and intervened. 3. They need a desk manager day and night... you have to walk around with these bunch of keys all over Joburg... quite annoying. Also means you all have yo stick together as if you seperate you would have to really cordinate activities around entry and exit otherwise you are in hot stew!! 4. The breakfast provided is quite inadequate. Not a hot meal at all, should be referred to as something else. 5. The bedroom with 2 beds should be for kids only or at most teenagers. All beds are quite comfy but the two are quite tiny.
Hi Elidah I will respond to each point so this will be long… ‘Malls are off’? Cresta Mall is 2km away with 260 shops. Within 3.5km, are another 5 smaller shopping centres. Service: Luggage. Guests generally manage their own luggage but our staff are ALWAYS willing to help. They work from 8am to 5pm so they were not available when you checked in later in the evening. Food deliveries. Depending on the app used, some deliveries require a code. When a guest informs me and provides the code, I am able to assist. Some orders are COD – unless a guest informs me, I am unable to assist. We have 8 suites. When your delivery guy rang the bell, you had not messaged me that you were expecting a delivery so I did not know whose food it was. Rather than me messaging and disturbing ALL the guests, I asked your driver to phone the number on the order to contact the person directly. This is what they are supposed to do in a complex/multiple-use building so he was quite happy to do so. At no point did you have to intervene to ‘save’ your food. He was busy dialling your number. 24 hour desk manager. This is a guesthouse, not a hotel. Booking.com clearly states our reception hours as does the sign at the entrance gate. Breakfast. Again I would refer you to booking.com as well as our own website which clearly states a ‘continental breakfast’ – we just add extra. We provide cereal, Weetbix and muesli; eggs (with egg boiler) or they can be scrambled with cheese and tomato also provided; plus health bread for toast, juice, yoghurt and muffins – the difference is that guests prepare it themselves in their rooms, at THEIR convenience which works for both our business and holiday guests schedules. 2nd bedroom. The bedroom is furnished with 2 full size single beds – not narrow children’s beds - and is listed as such on booking.com and our website. We frequently have adults using it with no complaints. The problem was probably the amount of luggage you ladies travelled with. Other points you have omitted: The first night you switched off your phone and left your friend who flew in later than you did, ‘stranded’ from 2am until I woke up, found out what had happened and let her in, at which point she refused to talk to you. You requested a driver service at certain times but repeatedly made him wait (in excess of 4 hours overall). His fee was fixed and did not cover his wasted time. You disregarded our no visitor rules and were loud and disruptive to other guests who were trying to sleep at 2am. I’m sorry that you did not enjoy your stay and strongly recommend you use a hotel for your next trip. sincerely, Sharon

(It works well for business people) But we packed it with the same luxury and comfort... even a little extra with the bath tub :) and I'm glad you enjoyed your stay with us as brief as it was.
