Each review score is between 1 and 10. To get the overall score you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of them. We use a weighted review system, which means the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. Guests can also give separate “subscores” in crucial areas like location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value, and free Wifi. Note that guests submit their subscores and overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an accommodation that you booked through our platform if you stayed there, or if you got to the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialize in detecting fake reviews submitted to our platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team so that our fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we'd publish every review we get, positive and negative. However, we won’t display any reviews that include or refer to (among other things):
- Politically sensitive comments
- Promotional content
- Illegal activities
- Personal or sensitive info (e.g. emails, phone numbers, credit card info)
- Swear words, sexual references, hate speech, discriminatory remarks, threats, or references to violence
- Spam and fake content
- Animal cruelty
- Impersonation (i.e. if the writer is claiming to be someone else)
- Any violation of our review guidelines.
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out. We may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old, or if the accommodation has a change of ownership.
An accommodation can reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (e.g. language, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). You can sort and/or filter them by time of year, review score, and more.
Sometimes we show external review scores from other well-known travel websites, but make it clear when we do this.
Guidelines and Standards for Reviews
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly, without limiting expression or strong opinions. They're also applicable regardless of the comment's tone.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. No complaints... its is just a easy place to stay and enjoy the area
Happy and Belinda were extremely helpful and kind, making sure we were well taken care of.. location is great with easy access to Gateway and hospitals... Great for a quick few days to explore the Umhlanga and easy on the budget

Only complaint - they had put two single beds together to make a double bed, the mattresses were different so that was a bit uncomfortable but they body got used to it.
The location of the accommodation is quite close to the Umhlanga Village, which is really nice as we didn't have to travel that far to get to the beach, restaurants etc. The host, Happy, was very accommodating to our needs when it came to leaving early or coming back late.

Gosh I like the bed it was so comfy and smelling nice the room was so clean and the view from the bed was very cute. Not to mention the staff the lady name is Happy she was very welcoming and helpful.

My only gripe, was, the first night I was put into a room I never booked, it was a bit on the cramped side. It was explained that the client occupying my room asked for another night. I feel strongly that he should have been moved and not me.
I had such a wonderful stay at Umhlanga Guesthouse. From the moment I arrived, I felt welcomed and comfortable. Happy and Belinda were incredibly friendly and attentive. Clean, cozy and beautifully decorated, the room I was eventually settled into. The first night I was in a room I never asked for, due to the room being accommodated by a client who asked for another night. The atmosphere, peaceful, homely and relaxing, Location perfectly situated, close to the promenade, great shops and restaurants. It was a perfect getaway, I left refreshed and happy. I would highly recommend this guesthouse to anyone visiting. I can't wait to come back again.

The pictures on the site did not do justice for this place. Thank you to the the Lovely Happiness for making sure our stay was comfortable and memorable. Great place for family trips with the kids. Group of friends or just couples. Will definitely be coming back here soon.

Everything! It was perfect. The hospitality, cleanliness, comfort, outdoor space, location. Excellent communication and really kind hosts. I highly recommend this guesthouse. Iv even extended my stay :)

The rooms are cold when you ask for aircon they say they don't allow guests to switch them on. Someday they don't clean.

I would like to say the only real issue I had was how I could hear everything happening next door. The sounds proofing needs a bit of work please.
I loved the location, right in a safe are of Umhlanga, and near the mall for all your needs. Down the road form the restaurants and close to the highway.

Absolutely nothing
Everything about Umhlanga self catering was perfect. The kind welcoming lady with big smile and respect. The friendly owner and her daughter ❤️and all the staff members were just 10/10. The idea of ironing for guests at a very reasonable price took the cup for me 🫠🫠. May God bless that place with more Guests just for their professionalism and Heart warming hospitality.
