Discovering Lions, following leopards and cheetahs, seeing the magnificent beauty of the Giraffes and Elephants. But what truly set Makweti apart were the small, thoughtful touches that made our stay so special. Let’s talk about the beds—honestly, the most comfortable I have ever slept in. After a day of adventure, climbing into that heavenly bed was bliss in itself. And the hot water bottle surprise tucked in waiting for us? Such a simple gesture, but it made us feel completely looked after and cozy. The attention to detail throughout the lodge was impeccable. From the beautifully curated decor and cozy fireplaces to the gourmet meals that rival any top-tier restaurant, every moment was filled with care and elegance. The setting—overlooking the stunning wilderness—was so serene and picturesque that it felt like a dream. The staff were simply exceptional. Warm, knowledgeable, and genuinely invested in making our stay unforgettable. They anticipated every need before we even thought to ask. And just when we thought the experience couldn’t get any more magical—an elephant wandered down toward our room as we were checking out and casually drank from our plunge pool! It was such a surreal and beautiful moment that perfectly captured the wild, unscripted wonder of Makweti. Our stay at Makweti was great. Joseph was a very knowledgable and friendly guide, and the game drives were excellent. We saw four of the Big Five (elephant, rhino, buffalo, lion) during our four day stay, and many other species, including a cheetah from afar. Welgevonden is a beautiful part of the Waterberg, with an interesting variety of landscapes. Our hosts Byron, Jacqui and Josheph went out of their way to make our stay a memorable one. All meals were delicious, and the facilities were excellent.

The accommodation has place for up to 10 people in 5 different houses. With an extra spacious main house and lobby, the Makweti is the perfect place for a peace of mind. Extremely quiet, no children and with no fence around the premises, the bush is always nearby. Couldn't whish a better place to relax and reset from the day to day (technology-based) life. It would have been nice if the plunge/spa pool on our deck was heated, as we never got to use it due to the weather being too cold for most of our stay. We also never got to experience the Boma area. To be honest, I didn't even think to ask about it while there, as we were so pleasantly overwhelmed with everything else. However, having just seen it on the website's photos, it could have been a nice place to have dinner one evening.

Wonderfully friendly and attentive staff. Our game ranger, Byron, was fantastic. You could really tell that he's passionate about what he does and was determined to ensure we got to experience the best the bush had to offer. Obviously there's a good amount of luck involved, but thanks to Byron's skill and determination, we boxed off the big 5 in our first two days and got to witness some very rare sightings, such as a leopard and her cub feeding at night and a one week old baby rhino. Another real bonus is that Makweti is permitted to operate two game vehicles for only 10 guests, meaning there is only max 6 persons in your vehicle. Often me and my partner had the vehicle to ourselves - while some other lodges were cramming 14 into a single car! Our room was cleaned immaculately every day. The complimentary decanter of port was a nice feature (I think it was complimentary?!). The main lodge had stunning views of the bush and cozy fireplaces for the chilly days. The staff really went the extra mile wherever they could, with hot water bottles, fleece ponchos, blankets and handwarmers for the cold weather game drives. Hot towels and ceremonial drums to welcome you back to the lodge. The food was a real highlight and something to really look forward to after each drive. On first impression, it would seem like the portions were a little too small (I'm a big eater), but I actually never felt hungry at all while I was there. I would recommend Makweti to any travelers looking to experience all the wildlife of the bush in comfort and luxury.

We had a wonderful experience at Makweti for 3 nights. The lodge is beautifully designed, and feels very traditional yet modern. The room was exceptionally comfortable with a gorgeous deck, indoor and outdoor showers and super comfortable bed. The staff were absolutely amazing - Joseph and Byron took fantastic care of us from dawn until after sundown. The food was above and beyond my expectations - varied, healthy, fresh and balanced for every single meal. The game drives were fantastic and lasted 3 hours twice per day. We saw 4 of 5 of the Big Five in our 3 day stay. I would absolutely love to stay at Makweti again.

Rooms can do with a little upgrade please, linen had a tear. Game drive stop snacks can get a little attention compared to Cliff top.

I loved it all!

Joseph and the game drives were amazing. We saw elephants, lions, cheetahs, giraffes, hippos, rhinos... Etc Great private and beautiful reserve, room was huge and dip pool was refreshing! Front of house team were also spectacular and food was yum.

Magweti is a true magical place within the Private Welgevonden Game Reserve, about 250km north of JoBurg. The location, the people, the lodges and the food all are all on a very high standard, but on a very intimate scale.

We drove by ourselves. Staff send us a map because at the end of the route there is no phone reception. We saw there was a note on the map which indicates TAKE CASH WITH YOU FOR THE TOLLS. Unfortunately we saw that after we started the journey :) you wont be able to find any change office on the route, tolls dont accept credit cards. We managed to withdraw money at some kind of market but it was deffinetly challenging. Beside this there wasnt any problem, I am great we did this vacation

Great experience… this was our first safari and I’m sure we wont forget about anything about it. It was also our honeymoon and staff was great, they made sure that we had a great time at there. We stayed for only two nights, only regret that we have is we wish we made it longer.

There was funny smell coming from the closet. I couldn’t tell what it was.

The meals served at the lodge were just amazing. The springbok steak, homemade pie and trout were top notch. They were one of the best I have eaten before.The room was tastefully decorated and was spacious enough for two adults.

We liked all this wonderful lodge had offered, from the beautiful Bushveld, to the friendly and helpful staff, as well as the most delicious food! Phillip our chef and his team were great. The lodge is a real gem offering luxury and relaxation. Our rooms were spotless clean, beautifully decorated and catered for ones every need. What an unforgettable experience we have had to pay a visit and spot four of the big 5 animals up close! Our ranger was Joseph, who was not only an excellent guide and driver, but who has estonished us with his rich knowledge on animals, trees, birds and even butterflies, he eagerly shared with us. Upon receiving info that lions had been spotted, he has taken us to the area as quickly as possible and ensured a sighting we will always remember! Every effort had been made to accommodate us and to provide for all our needs. Everyone has contributed to ensure that our stay was fantastic. Neil and Jessica are wonderful managers with a team that deserves an applause! We thank you for making our stay fantastic and unforgettable!

We spent 10 fantastic days here, previous experience of three days safari was not enough. Great food, nice wines, good company, excellent atmosphere, lovely hosts and incredible game drives were amazing. Our guide Roelof was exceptional his knowledge was amazing and did his best to accommodate our needs together with partner Tatum and Neil, Jessica and Joseph made our trip to the Bushveld a holiday to remember. If you love nature are an early riser and like being spoilt this is a trip for you.....
