Each review score is between 1 and 10. To get the overall score you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of them. We use a weighted review system, which means the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. Guests can also give separate “subscores” in crucial areas like location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value, and free Wifi. Note that guests submit their subscores and overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an accommodation that you booked through our platform if you stayed there, or if you got to the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialize in detecting fake reviews submitted to our platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team so that our fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we'd publish every review we get, positive and negative. However, we won’t display any reviews that include or refer to (among other things):
- Politically sensitive comments
- Promotional content
- Illegal activities
- Personal or sensitive info (e.g. emails, phone numbers, credit card info)
- Swear words, sexual references, hate speech, discriminatory remarks, threats, or references to violence
- Spam and fake content
- Animal cruelty
- Impersonation (i.e. if the writer is claiming to be someone else)
- Any violation of our review guidelines.
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out. We may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old, or if the accommodation has a change of ownership.
An accommodation can reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (e.g. language, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). You can sort and/or filter them by time of year, review score, and more.
Sometimes we show external review scores from other well-known travel websites, but make it clear when we do this.
Guidelines and Standards for Reviews
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly, without limiting expression or strong opinions. They're also applicable regardless of the comment's tone.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and other similar details.

Northcliff is a lovely safe area.We went to Olivia’s Bakery just down the road for the most amazing breakfasts. Our room no 3 is a corner top level room with stunning views of Joburg. The bed and duvet were extremely comfy and top quality. The shower was powerful and both bath and shower had plenty hot water, the heating was great. The location was perfect for us visiting family , lots of restaurants and Churches nearby and Cresta shopping centre a short drive away too.

The breakfast that was promised did not meet our expectations. The steep steps leading to our unit are dangerous

We stayed in a studio room. Our only issue was the noise factor. It is difficult if a couple has one person who gets up before the other person. You simply can't be quiet in the room. There were little things that could be improved to help - for example, rubbish bin was metal with a metal lid, bathroom door was squeaky, shower recess was plastic making it really loud when taking a shower, the shower door was clunky, crockery was loud on the kitchen benchtops, cupboard doors didn't close smoothly. I think these are little things that can be big things in the early mornings when you're trying to be quiet. We could also hear the neighbours through the walls. The TV was too small and too far away. Can't watch it easily from the bed.
Location was perfect as a base for our activities during the day. View is amazing.

Elna instantly made us feel at home. Spotlessly clean room, spacious and very well equipped. The view was beautiful, the location excellent and we could relax completely. We had an awsome time and will definitely book again when we are in Johannesburg.

It couldn't be helped, but the electricity outage over our period of stay was the only issue.
The hospitality was great. The set-up was most comfortable and spacious.

The Guest House was easy to find. The host was lovely and welcomed us warmly. The room had a phenomenal view. The aircon worked very well. There was netflix available. The bed was comfy. And the bathroom and bedroom was extremely clean. All around, our stay was very comfortable and we will definitely be returning. If you're thinking about where to stay, look no further.

The rooms are spacious and stunning. It is very neat and the host is absolutely amazing. My husband and I have been staying here as our go to boutique hotel in Johannesburg for the last 5 years. We love it.

Every thing is good but could do with more 2 pin plug points.
Excellent location. It's clean . Has everything from hairdryer to iron. There's coffee tea and rusks. A very nice touch especially if you check in late when everything is closed.

I absolutely loved this place! Surrounded by nature, it's the perfect spot to unwind and relax. The beds were incredibly comfortable - I slept soundly. Our host, Elna, was warm and welcoming, ensuring we had everything we needed. She genuinely cares about her guests, making our stay truly special. Thank you, Elna, for a wonderful experience! Located on one of the hills of Johannesburg, this is an ideal place to enjoy the city whether for business or leisure. The accommodation has everything essential, very cozy, clean and comfortable, and its owners are there always ready to give you a hand. What a beautiful view! What a wonderful place! A 100% highly recommended place.
