How guest reviews work
Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We use a weighted review system which means that the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
- Politically sensitive comments
- Promotional content
- Illegal activities
- Personal or sensitive information (e.g. emails, phone numbers or credit card info)
- Swear words, sexual references, hate speech, discriminatory remarks, threats, or references to violence
- Spam and fake content
- Animal cruelty
- Impersonation (e.g. if the writer is claiming to be someone else)
- Any violation of our review guidelines.
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
Guidelines and standards for Reviews
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.

Verified reviewRoom was spacious and everything was very clean. There were restaurants and shops within a short walking distance. The breakfast was excellent, lots of choice. The staff were all extremely friendly and helpful. We went on 2 trips they organised for us which were really good. We would definitely recommend this place to others and if we ever stay in St Lucia again we will stay here.

Verified reviewI loved everything about it. The location was perfect. So near to the Isimangaliso wetland park and the city. The staff were amazing and so helpful and accommodating. The place is neat and clean and there is a back entrance to rooms so you are welcome to come in and out as you please. We really enjoyed our stay.

Verified reviewThere was no water heater and we were freezing in the morning. At night the bed was comfy but something was off with our feelings (idk).
We were not aware of the check out time of 10 am, we left at 5 am for morning safari and came back to find our things were removed to the office. Maybe the host could have informed and we would have removed ours things and put it into the car.
Thank you for your review, however we do feel that this is a very unfair score considering some of the issues regarding your stay with us. I would like to address your issues as well as ours below: 1. We apologise about the water being cold, due to the unexpected power outage that the whole town experienced for 24h during your stay the electric geyser would not have been able to maintain its heat. On check in we invite all our guests to ring the bell in reception if they have problems or require assistance or information. If you had communicated this with us we could have by provided you with warm water for a bath. 2. In the booklet in your room and on Booking.com it clearly states our check-in and check-out times, All hotels and guestouses have similar checkin and checkout times, this should not have come as a surprise to you. We do allow for late checkouts on arrangement, which you did not request. Had you done so, you would have realised why we had to remove your luggage from the room as we had a checkin for that room scheduled for between 2 and 3pm. 3. You also failed to communicate with us that you would be on Safari on your check out date resulting in staff preparing breakfast for your family for which you never arrived. 4. The noise you and your children made leaving at 4.30/5am resulted in a lot of fellow guests complaining about the noise and lack of consideration for the fact that others in the guesthouse were still asleep at that time. 5. We had new guests checking into the room therefore we had no choice but to move your luggage in order to get the room ready for the next check-in, This was crucial as you only came back from Safari well after 13:00 (due to our check-in time being from 14:00 it would have given us too short a window to service the room so we had no choice but to move your luggage). 5. When you first booked the room you only booked for 2 Adults and 1 child however when you arrived there was an additional child with your party. Not only did you try to hide an additional child, but you tried to mislead us regarding their age (to which your child indignantly corrected you in our presence). This would not have been a problem had you communicated it with us beforehand (we did not even charge you extra for the additional child on your departure). We pride ourselves with our warm friendly atmosphere and we happily assist and accommodate our guests where ever possible, Your stay and our experience of your stay would have been so much more positive had you been open with us in the very short time you were with us.

Verified reviewI had such a great stay at the Santa Lucia Guest House. From the moment I arrived, the staff made me feel right at home. The room was clean, comfy, and had such a cozy vibe to it—perfect for a relaxing getaway. I loved waking up to the peaceful surroundings, and the breakfast each morning was amazing, with fresh local ingredients. The place is in a great spot—quiet and private but still close to everything you might want to check out. I definitely left feeling refreshed and can’t wait to come back next time I’m in the area. Highly recommend this spot if you’re looking for a chill and welcoming place to stay.

Verified reviewA wonderful place to stay. It's very peaceful but also very close to walk to the restaurants and shops. The owners are extremely welcoming and friendly. The team helped to book activities. Breakfast is really excellent and plentiful. Look out for the local hippos that come out to graze in the park next door at night!

Verified reviewEileen and Philipp and the whole staff are amazing people! We loved to chat and listen to them. They gave our trip a warmth hug. The room was beautiful, large, with good beds (!) and absolutely quiet. The small pool just right to have a refreshment after a hot, humid day.
Everything was really fantastic, especially the self-made muffins, fruit salad by (unfortunately I forgot her name).

Come back some time and see how we've changed it! We offered you two other bedrooms with softer matresses. When you left we asked how it worked with the duvet cover we put under the bedsheet, and you said it was "perfect". So I am surprised that this was brought up now on this platform. Unfortunately mattresses are personal taste and we cannot please everyone in this regard. Our mattresses are specifically selected in the midrange to suit the majority. Your score us a 5 on cleanliness - could you elaborate on this please? Did the staff not clean the room properly? This is our lowest score yet, and we take our cleanliness very seriously. I'm sorry you did not bring this up while you were here. Goya appreciates the special mention. :-)
