How guest reviews work
Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We use a weighted review system which means that the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
- Politically sensitive comments
- Promotional content
- Illegal activities
- Personal or sensitive information (e.g. emails, phone numbers or credit card info)
- Swear words, sexual references, hate speech, discriminatory remarks, threats, or references to violence
- Spam and fake content
- Animal cruelty
- Impersonation (e.g. if the writer is claiming to be someone else)
- Any violation of our review guidelines.
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
Guidelines and standards for Reviews
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options may be available (by type of traveller, by score, etc.).

Verified reviewEverything. The ambience of the location in the evening. The soothing energy of the beautiful historic site. The view of the sparkling city lights. The fresh air. The books. The sleep I had. The breakfast menu choices. The tasteful and carefully selected decor. The mass variety of restaurants and activities available to do in the neighbourhood. The hot water bottle and warm bed. I found Gina the owner to be a spectacular host. Like I said everything....

Verified review“A colossal affair by any standard—it was a factual imitation of some Hotel de Ville in Normandy...” The Great Gatsby is a lovely randlord mansion on leafy Munro Drive in Houghton Estate, chockablock with antiques from the Roaring Twenties. Hostess Gina Gabriel, who has owned the house for a couple of decades, is a charming ranconteuse who provides wonderful conversation and advice. The Library is an excellent choice, just next to the Boudoir. Highly recommended!

Verified reviewI was so impressed with the presentation of the food. It was fresh and full of flavour. Gina really understands her way around the kitchen. The location is also perfect. I am familiar with the area but my time at the Gatsby gave me a different experience and perspective of the area. Gina is one of a kind. She's welcoming and accommodating. The interior styling in the main house is so refreshing to the eye, like something out of a vintage vogue magazine. I stayed in the Princess room and felt like a real princess. My stay was so good, I didn't wanna go back to normal life just yet and ended up extending my time there which was worth every penny. I highly recommend The Gatsby, whether you're traveling for work or a local just wanting a few quiet days away while being catered to, then Gina is your girl and Gatsby is the place.

Verified reviewWe loved the enthusiastic welcome Gina and her team, Mike and Privilege, gave us. Nothing was too much trouble! It’s like being whisked back a century to a time and place where the rich Randlords built small castles where they lived in supreme luxury - and we were invited to enter and share in living this enchanted life. Splendid time travel indeed! We were lucky enough to be upgraded to the Library Room which is sumptuously comfortable and has the most delicious en suite shower. Breakfast was an abundant delight, served in the gracious and beautiful dining room. Can’t wait to return and try out some of the other accommodation options.

Verified reviewWhat an utterly gorgeous heritage house that has been restored to period perfection! It felt like stepping into a 1920s time machine. I stayed in a small room within the main house and it felt incredibly cosy. Very comfy bed and the view from the window was so wonderful I refused to draw the curtains closed! It felt like staying in an exotic botanical garden. Several spaces downstairs lend themselves to sitting in comfort over a book or quiet conversation, though I hadn't time to indulge. Parking and unloading was in a private, secure area, on the carriage drive in the front of the house.
Booking.com doesn't mention that the least expensive room has a separate, albeit private, bathroom. For me this wasn't a bother as it's only a few meters from the bedroom to the loo, but it might irk some visitors! The owner graciously invited me to upgrade to a room with an en suite, but it wasn't necessary!

Verified reviewHow do I put into words the hospitality I have been shown by Gina? She is truly amazing and literally goes above and beyond for her guests. I was spoilt enough with her generosity by putting me in the Boudoir Suite - A DEFINITE MUST FOR ALL! This place is exquisite and the food to die for. Thank you Gina, absolutely loved my stay here. Not even 5 Stars will cut it, 10/10
The only thing I didn't like is that I had to leave to go back home!

Verified reviewAn amazing old school mansion and surrounds set in Houghton. It is 1926 era home with much character and life. It really is like The Great Gatsby setting. Gina, the host, goes along with the house perfectly, with so much energy and character. It was a great stay and we will definitely stay again if we ever get back to Johannesburg.
