The outside onsen was very nice in the morning and evening and complemented the downstairs onsen. It's a real onsen. The staff and owner excel at hospitality and going the extra mile to help you provide advice and give the traditional welcome, which is often missing from the more modern mass market onsens. We were served food in a private room, and the dinner and breakfast were exceptional.

This Ryokan/Onsen is outside of Nagano, and about 30 minutes via train. While it was out of the way, the beginning-to-end experience was exceptional. Our traditional Japanese room was large, and well set up for a good night sleep. They helped us ship our suitcases to our next destination, making our next stage travel very easy. We opted for Kaiseki meals for dinner and breakfast. We had our own dining room for two and the food was excellent. About seven different stages were provided from chilled food to dessert. The sake pours were very very generous, and there was a good selection of sake to choose from. Breakfast was in the same private room, and just as varied. A really good start to the day.

one of the best ryokans we've ever stayed in. good value for money (we went off peak season). staff service was just superb. you have to remove your shoes at the entrance but no worries they provide slippers for you to move around and your shoes will be waiting at the steps when you leave. clogs available if you're venturing out nearby. free yukata for women- yukatas were beautiful. watched youtube on how to wear it. swiss hospitality lost to this ryokan's hospitality. everyone was so helpful, even wiped clean the wheels of our suitcases. rooms were huge. initially was apprehensive because only the smallest room was available and did not see any toilets in the pictures but thankfully the rooms (even the smallest one) were HUGE. onsen quite small but unlike other prefectures, we noticed ppl around here tend to just soak for 10 mins and leave immediately after a soak so turnover was quite fast. food was amazing!

It was such a wonderful experience staying in Nakamatsuya. Service was exceptional. Staff were super friendly and polite. Food was delicious and a lot of local ingredients. Hot spring was really nice overlooking the city from top floor. We enjoyed our stay and would love to come back in the future. If you want to experience true Japanese Onsen experience, don’t miss it!

Traditional Ryokan with good location. Have been to this place two times already, 24h Onsen access, spacious rooms, and I really recommend the japanese breakfast & Kaiseki style Dinner! Tyler is a great and very helpful host. See you next time :)

Amazing dinner and breakfast. We had a private room for eating. The room was also very comfortable. We had everything we needed there, including hygiene products and clothes (yukata, socks). There was an indoor and exterior onsen, which were very clean and relaxing. The staff was very helpful and we were offered a ride to Togura Station after our stay. It is a bit expensive but worth it, I would like to return.

It is a quirky old museum-like Ryokan. There are beautiful gardens in courtyards.

Loved that this beautiful inn was outside the city. Tyler picked/dropped us from Togura train station so it was convenient. It was nice to be able to recharge and relax here. The onsens were great. Only regret is we didn’t stay longer to explore more of the town. All the staff were very welcoming and helpful.
