Everything well thought out, wonderfully helpful staff, beautiful food, great views, comfy room, glorious onsen. If I ever return to Nikko, I won’t hesitate to re-book and stay in one of their Japanese rooms again!

Established in 1666, Honke Bankyu is housed in a registered historical building. The Japanese rooms feature traditional decor, futon bedding and a flat-screen TV. Literally everything. The hotel is an amazing 300+ year old guest house and scenery from the rooms is amazing. This is a must go Onsen Hotel!

Just a 15-minute walk from the Nikko Toshogu Shrine, Nikko Hoshino Yado features natural hot-spring baths with Japanese garden views, traditional kaiseki (multi-course) cuisine and Japanese-style... I loved their super zen Japanese garden - our room and the dining room had views onto this beautiful garden. I also loved their outdoor onsen with the cedar wood tub - it was amazing to soak in this and smell the comforting cedar in hot spring water, absolutely decadent. And the food! Breakfasts and dinners were utterly amazing - especially our first dinner where we were taught to cook our own yuba sashimi (the local tofu delicacy in Nikko). The spread is huge, and everything tasted wonderful. But most especially, I liked that the hotel had the foresight to employ English-speaking workers, it made our entire experience much more meaningful when the staff were able to explain things to us. The hotel is perfectly located - about 5 mins by bus from the Tobu Nikko train station, and 3 mins walk to the Shinkyo bridge and close to the shrines. The bus stop is right in front of the hotel and we took this bus on the famous winding Irohazaka Road (which inspired the Initial D series) up to Lake Chuzenji and Kegon waterfalls.

I selected this place because I read other reviews about the eclectic unique nature of the hotel and atmosphere. I wasn’t disappointed, in fact it exceeded my expectations in every way. The moment you arrive and are greeted warmly by the staff and handed a free drink of your choice, sets the tone for a wonderful experience ahead. The room was huge, warm, comfortable and very special in its minute details of architecture. We chose a river view room and I would highly recommend doing so as the massive picture window overlooks the forest and mountains and is simply breathtaking in the morning sunrise. This hotel was designed with careful thought given to every detail in its creation, with the mindset of creating a restful respite from the modern busy world we live in today. It has achieved this goal in my opinion and then some. We had the honour and pleasure of meeting the architect the second day we stayed and had a conversation with him about his wonderful hotel, he is such a joy to speak with. The food was also an absolute delight, huge filling and varied items at breakfast, and sumptuous selections and pairings at dinner. The staff are The best of anywhere we have stayed so far in Japan, and are gracious and smiling all the time. We speak very limited Japanese but this was never a problem so don’t worry about this as a barrier for coming here. We wouldn’t hesitate to come back and I was sorry I had to leave. This hotel, and Nikko is such a special beautiful place everyone should see it once if they can. Thank you shelter garden and staff for allowing me to have such a warm, restful and wonderful stay at your gorgeous hotel, and thank you so much for all your warmth and hospitality.

We were guests at the Iizukatei Hotel for three nights – a wonderful stay! We spent the first two nights in one of the renovated “Kura”. The small house – a traditionally renovated warehouse – had everything you need to feel comfortable! We could easily prepare our breakfast in the small kitchen. The bathroom and sleeping arrangements were perfect. We were particularly impressed by the fruit and vegetable platter that awaited us every day in our accommodation. The fridge was also always stocked with fresh drinks. On the third day, we moved to one of the hotel's more luxurious apartment. From there, we had a great view of the garden in several directions. The space was generously proportioned and nothing was missing. The hotel is located in a very quiet area in Nakagawa-machi, very close to the Bato Hiroshige Museum of Art, which was designed by Kengo Kuma. Nikkō is also easily accessible from here. For art lovers, we also recommend a visit to the MOB (Museum of Alternative Art), which is located not far from the hotel. Trips are also worthwhile to Nasu to the “Water Garden” by Junya Ishigami and to the sauna project “Genkiro” by artist Takashi Kuribayashi. An important addendum: On the last evening, we were allowed to use the brand new, not yet opened hotel sauna of the Iizukatei Hotel. It is – like the entire hotel complex – comfortable and inviting! It is a wonderful place to relax in the evening. Our special thanks go to “Mama Kei” for her warmth and attention, which made our stay a real gem.”
