Located in Matsushima, 10 km from Shiogama Shrine, Matsushima Koumura features accommodation with a hot tub and a public bath. Staff was very friendly and easy to talk to, and the inn made for a great stay. Also the sentō baths were a welcome addition and were nice for relaxing into! The area is calm (for which the only downside is that there isn't a lot of choice for restaurants around), close to transportation and good for sightseeing around Mastushima — we took the sightseeing ferry around the bay and had a great time.

Historical Ryokan SENYUKAN features a hot spring bath and free private parking, and is within 42 km of Lake Towada and 43 km of Sannai-Maruyama site. The staff were extremely helpful and friendly! They helped me securely store my bike and when I first got on the room they brought me a thermos with boiled water so I could have some tea immediately. The onsen itself was small but was pretty empty whenever I went, with good opening hours to suit all lifestyles.

Situated in Kuroishi in the Aomori region, Tabinoyado Saikawa features accommodation with free WiFi and free private parking, as well as access to spa facilities. This is a traditional Japanese ryokan with public baths (gender separated). Dinner and breakfast are amazing and plentiful, with locally sourced organic produce (even coffee!). Our room (Japanese room with private toilet) was to the left of the entrance. It was very spacious. The heater worked very well as autumn night was a bit damp and cold. The beds are futons on wood bed frames on tatami, and they are super comfortable. As I have a whole-leg tattoo which is usually not permitted in the public baths, I notified Ranko in advance, and she reserved the private bath for us. The private bath was a very beautiful blue ceramic bath filled with warm (I don’t think it’s very hot) healing hot spring water from the area. Ranko’s warm personality really made the stay memorable. Be sure to ask her for recommendations of the areas. She is a well of knowledge of the area!

10 km from Nihonmatsu Station in Nihommatsu, mt. Inn(マウントイン） offers accommodation with access to a hot spring bath and public bath. This 2-star ryokan offers a 24-hour front desk and a lift. Very cool place! The staff were so lovely, the rooms are huge and comfortable- we wish we stayed longer than 1 night!

Yuze Hotel has mountain views, free WiFi and free private parking, located in Kazuno, 38 km from Appi Kogen Ski Resort. This 4-star ryokan offers a lift and luggage storage space. The dinner was amazing - there was a station where the staff prepares a small dish on the spot for you. The onsen was eye-opening to say the least. It is located beside a stream / forest, and it was refreshing to soak in the onsen while listening to the stream flow by.

Set in Zao Onsen in the Yamagata region, Takasagoya Ryokan features accommodation with access to a public bath. The 3-star ryokan is 200 metres from Zao Onsen Ski Resort. Shu san and his family was so kind to me and nice they made me feel at home. Also the ryokan location is winner,you have public onsen in front of the ryokan. If you like to feel the Japanese tradition then this is for you.

Featuring free WiFi and a restaurant, Okawaso offers accommodation in Aizuwakamatsu, 13 km from Aizu Higashiyama Onsen. Each room at this ryokan is air conditioned and comes with a TV. We had an incredible stay here: the ryokan is impressive (especially the arrival with the person playing the shamisen), very beautiful, the food excellent and adaptable (we took vegetarian meals), the establishment is child-friendly (e.g. yukata at their sizes, arrival kits, high chairs and adapted cutlery), the room is magnificent and very suitable for a family. A bookable shuttle service is in place and works very well, allowing us to leave and arrive from Aizu Wakamatsu station. We also reserved the outdoor bath for private use: incredible! The staff is adorable and helpful: thank you very much!

Tokinenoyado Yunushi Ichijoh is situated in the Kamasaki Onsen district in Shiroishi, a 15-minute drive from Shiroishi Station and Shiroishi-Zao Station. It was absolutely exceptional, from the food, to the staff, to the service and hot springs, everything was simply immaculate. You cannot get any better than this.

Boasting natural hot spring baths, Hohoemino Kuyufu Tsuruya is located a 15-minute walk from JR Tendo Station, 50 km from Sendai. Highly recommended. The staff are standout super efficient, always available and friendly. The hotel is spotlessly clean and newly refurbished (especially the rooms). The Japanese breakfast was an amazing experience. If we had to do this northwest region again we'd definitely repeat this as our base.
