Portugal’s medieval capital, and a pioneer of fado music alongside its modern counterpart Lisbon, Coimbra is a vibrant university city with a good helping of historic sights.
The university is the country’s oldest and its attractive buildings cover a small hill overlooking the Mondego River. The institution has an excellent science museum, the ornate Joanina Library, and one of the world’s oldest botanical gardens which contributes to the lush landscape.
The midweek nightlife in the city’s bars and restaurants is popular with students, while shopping options range from the stores of the CoimbraShopping complex to smaller boutiques on cobbled streets in the historic Baixa district.
The medieval centre houses the museum of Coimbran sculptor Machado de Castro and the Old Cathedral, begun under the reign of the first Portuguese King, Afonso Henriques. He is buried in Santa Cruz Monastery, while the tomb of a later queen – Elizabeth of Aragon – is in the Monastery of Santa Clara-a-Nova. She founded this hilltop convent to replace flood-prone Santa Clara-a-Velha below. Between them is Portugal dos Pequenitos where Portugal’s main monuments are reproduced in miniature.
Nearby is Quinta das Lágrimas, a 19th-century mansion that is now a luxury hotel on Booking.com. Also available are cheap hostels and guest houses near the 2 main train stations.
Coimbra is a delightful town to visit. The town is architecturally pleasing, with clean, safe, streets, and a refreshing lack of graffiti.
There is a good choice of hotels and restaurants, and those that we patronized were of good quality, with helpful staff, all of whom, in our experience spoke good English. Recommended

Our accommodation had the perfect location; we walked everywhere. The nearby restaurants were serving great food. Our street had 2 nice restaurants that were frequented by locals, and the prices were very reasonable compared to the more touristy places.

Coimbra is a great city to visit and use as base to explore other locations in central Portugal. Make sure you wear comfy shoes, the cobbles streets and walking is often up steep hills. The library is worth viewing at the university, but make sure you book in advance or get there early, as they have limited tickets and time slots. The parks are beautiful along the river and worth taking the time to visit. If adventuring out, highly recommend Obidos and the Buddha Eden garden, as well as Aveiro and Costa Nova.

Coimbra has a lot to offer travelers.
Coimbra has a lot to offer travelers. Centro (old part of town) is very lovely and has a lot to see. Many small interesting roads and pathways to walk around and see beautiful buildings, historical churchs, shops, cafes...Restaurants are reasonably priced and there is a variety of different cuisines to accommodate everyone. We stayed one night, but could have easily stayed another night.

Five-minute walk from Coimbra A train station; online pix meant we knew exactly which building to look for.
This is a charming and old-fashioned hotel that antique-lovers should really enjoy; it's like being on the set of a 1920s or earlier movie, and has an old-fashioned wood-lined elevator, complete with folding bench. We loved the place, but ...
The one perturbing thing was the lack of in-room Wifi, but there are lots of comfortable spaces to connect on the main floor. For a couple of vacation days, though, this was not a big deal.
This is a great, smaller-sized hotel in the heart of downtown Coimbra. 2 minute walk from the main drag in the city center, close to shops, restaurants and historic sites. The view of the university at the top of the old city at night is literally unbeatable, I would recommend staying here just for the view alone! That being said, the hotel was clean and comfortable and the staff were very friendly, they gave lots of good recommendations on where to go and how to get around town. I'd definitely stay here again.
Beautifully appointed. Stylish, quality creative, lovely detailing throughout. Paula’s care and passion was evident in every aspect of our stay — from her warm welcome with port and chocolates and tone of local knowledge shared, to the beautiful room, awesome views form the patio, abundant and delicious breakfast. Don’t miss the extraordinary restaurant just down the street for dinner, Cordel. Sit outside on the balcony and watch the sunset over Coimbra. Our fave evening in Portugal!
The location was perfect and having two bathrooms was a big convenience. The apartment had everything we could possibly need. Ismael, the host was absolutely the best out of all of our Portugal stays. He made sure that everything was satisfactory and checked on us during our stay. Ismael not only picked us up from the bus station upon our arrival, but took us on a tour of Coimbra before taking us to the apartment. He also drove us to the train station for our departure.
The apartment in Coimbra was spacious and well-equipped, with a great balcony overlooking the city. The cathedral is not to be missed, and the university, which sits atop the city (very high), is the oldest in Portugal, one of the oldest in the world. The university library and the chapel of Sao Miguel are all well worth seeing, advise to purchase tickets (and times) before arriving. The botanical garden is a pleasant place to spend some time relaxing.
The accomodatin is very comfortable. Apartment was nice and good equipped. Shared kitchen is clean also. There is enough space in fridges and in cases.
Service is very good. The personnel helped us when we had a problems during the travel accros the Portugal. They were very cooperative.
We spent our holiday in Portugal in four places. The price and level of service were the best here. Thank you very much, we wish you many disciplined guests
Travelling from NZ we were wanting home that could not only accommodate our family but also friends. We also wanted to have family get together and some cultural celebrations prior to wedding. On arrival we found Spacious rooms and clean open areas. Loved the host. He was calm and very attentive to needs despite us being in different time zones we were able to communicate through WhatsApp before arriving to Portugal.
Owner was accommodating
The owners and staff - Joao, Ana, Janet - were so helpful. They booked an amazing boat trip, gave us an orientation to Coimbra, and even gave us a ride when we needed it. The building is gorgeous - if a bit vertically challenging like most places in older parts of the cities of Portugal. They provided an amazing breakfast - try the pumpkin jam with the bread! - and port and drinks at night.
The location is fantastic--just a few step down the cobblestoned hill to the main square and main shopping street of the old town. Near many cafes and restaurants. Also near the old church where the first king of Portugal is buried. These units are being entirely refurbished by the owners in marble and wood. Incredibly clean! The duvet and towels are new and of good quality.
Everything; especially the location. Situated near the old square, we were serenaded with smooth jazz in the morning. We could reach the market, the university, cathedral, and river bridge in easy walks. The hotel staff were very kind, especially helping us with parking and our bags. The roof top terrace above the Hotel Oslo was special too. We would stay there again.
- Good hotel with kids as it had a mini park in the swimming pool area. So close for parents to keep an eye on them. There was also an other activities room for kids.
- The Breakfast was great and had a large variety of both savoury and sweet.
- Can walk on river front from hotel to city centre
- Had some discounts for sightseeing like "Portugal dos Pequenitos"
Location is excellent as it is very close, walking distance to Coimbra A train station and Praça do Comércio where there's plenty of restaurants and shopping. Also within walking distance, about 15 - 20 minutes over the bridge to Portugal dos Pequenitos. Hotel was clean and comfortable. Great hotel value if you're not spending a lot of time in your room!
The location ais great, very central! As Coimbra is quite small is a perfect place to stay for a weekend. The studio was cleaned, and has basic thing in the kitchen so enough to cook few basic meals. Perfect for a weekend or a pitstop while travelling trough Portugal. Also, there was an AC in the studio which helped a lot.
Everything was perfect, the lady at the reception desk was extremly helpful and nice, she also gave us some very useful advise and helped us to find parking. Breakfast was very nice, room was perfectly clean.
If we come to Coimbra again - this would be our choice. Best accomodation throughout our journey in Portugal !
Hotel Tivoli is more like a business hotel than a tourist hotel, but our room was quite large and comfortable. It is about a 10-15 minute walk to the center of Coimbra, and is located approximately mid-way between the Coimbra A and Coimbra B train stations. There's a good restaurant attached to the hotel.
Great location to old town. The apartments work in partnership with Hotel Oslo, which is just around the corner. Hotel Oslo have a great rooftop bar to sit and watch the sunset. Apartment has kitchen with two hot plates and a microwave. There is secure parking 50m away for €10 a day.
Views were amazing over the city's lovely coloured buildings, Wonderfull kitch room totally bedazzled decor made for a special stay. Wonderful breakfast served in a lovely wicker basket. Hot tub.Thank you for making this one of our favourite stops in Portugal
This hotel is an authentic experience! The concept is quite new for hotels in Portugal, so you can expect some surprises!
The room is very comfy, and the bathroom is super cool. Breakfast has the most delicious croissants I have ever eaten.
Very rude front desk, they have rules that no other hotel in Portugal has.
I have a PCR negative test and a vaccination card from the USA and they made me pay for a test just to bet in to the hotel.
Staff is the friendliest I've met in Portugal. They don't charge the rooms at check in. One minute walk from Coimbra- A train station, short walk to downtown.
