We are scoping out retirement options so were looking for walkability and reliable public transportation. Tavira offers both! Local market is full of fresh meat, fish, fruits and vegetables along with wares such as baskets and cut flowers. Lots of restaurants and shops. Walking distance to train which we took to the eastern border then hopped a ferry to Spain for lunch. We opted out of the hotel breakfast and found a cafe across the river for coffee and avocado toast one day, another day we went to the Pingo Doce grocery store for coffee and a breakfast sandwich. We tried a different restaurant for dinner every night and every meal was fantastic. If we had to do it over again, we would not have rented a car. The metro, train and bus system is reliable and comfortable as well as much cheaper and less stressful.

Tavira is a city with very interesting architecture. It's crossed by a river that gives it a certain romantic flavour. It has some very interesting beaches nearby, with sand as far as the eye can see and good water quality.

Loved the Friendliness in this nice quaint old town, unfortunately the roads / streets were in process of being dug up & left rather unsafe ( we witnessed a lady falling).. lots of cobbled streets which were left unfinished. Hopefully they will complete soon for travellers & residents to enjoy this lovely town.

Tavira is full of character and has an obvious love of its history and heritage. It offers the opportunity to have a beach holiday without it being forced upon you. Wander down all the back streets and find new places.
We mostly self-catered but there are many restaurants with differing cuisines. Take a punt - it will probably pay off. If you like octopus take a trip to Santa Luzia just 3km away. It is a charming fishing port and the octopus catching centre of Portugal

We've become familiar with Tavira after several visits over recent years. It is a lovely understated destination as a living, breathing 365 days a year town. Not at all touristy, though popular and busy, it's a great base for a sunshine and beach holiday as well as easy access to Spain and onwards. A wide spread of bars and restaurants gives plenty of choice for evening entertainment, and all within short walking distance.

Tavira is a little gem of a town.
Tavira is a little gem of a town. There are tons of things to see and explore. People are friendly, the food scene is beyond incredible and the city is completely walkable. If you're looking for a small, quite, charming town then Tavira is the place.
Tavira House is an elegant, European style hotel. Centrally located in old part of Tavira on south bank of the river. Excellent breakfasts. The host, Filomena Diaz, made our stay special. She and her helper, also named Filomena, are perfectly attuned to their guests needs and wishes, helpful in every way. We became good friends with other guests we met there, and look forward to returning. We had a rental car and found Tavira House to be a wonderful base of operations for our five days exploring Tavira and the rest of the Algarve.
Great location. So much to see and do. Best beaches around Barrill , short taxi ride to bridge to access the beach. (sunbeds quite expensive 19 euros for 2 beds and an umbrella) . Isla de tavira a short walk from the hotel to a ferry 2.2 euros return takes you out to Isla de Tavira. White sandy beach. Boats very assessable and regular. Tavira has some excellent restaurants including some fine dining. Lots going on. Also visited fuzeta beach (short train ride from Tavira station (also on to faro town)
Well equipped kitchen, good shower, the location cannot be better, comfortable beds, quiet and efficient air conditioning. We like to have breakfasts on the rooftop terrace with a view of the sunrise, river, Roman bridge and old town. There are trays in the kitchen to take the breakfast to the roof. Also terrace is good for drying the cloves. Free parking lot is 400 m up river. Hotel is close to many good restaurants and to the beach ferry. The mangers are friendly and helpful.
The staff is wonderful! They are always ready to give indications, take care of any last minute request.
Really loved these ladies. The one on the night shift is especially kind.
The hotel is close to the river and port, so it's a short walk to catch the boat to Tavira Island.
There is a big supermarket close to the hotel, which revealed to be a bonus.
The "movida" of Tavira is close to the hotel, like walking distance close.
beautiful little hotel with a great swimming pool, many chill out areas and an overall relaxed atmosphere. every room is perfectly clean. amazing breakfast with plenty of fruits, egg variations and sweets. Geraldine is a wonderful and very humorous host! her tips on restaurants, beaches and activities were on point. quiet surroundings while very close to Tavira. we liked it so much that we stayed longer than planned.
Tavira House is a hidden gem in the picturesque town of Tavira. It is in a residential neighborhood yet very close to the riverfront, restaurants and sights. Our hostess Maria was engaging, helpful and friendly, in fact, she was the best hotelier we encountered on our 19 day trip to Portugal. Breakfast was delicious and abundant, so much more than a continental breakfast. It kept us full till dinner time.
Hotel is in a great location, close to Tavira town, easy to get ferry across to the beautiful island, walking distance to bus station. Staff are super friendly, welcoming and helpful, hotel itself is beautiful with a lovely pool and grounds. Breakfast was plentiful, great choices, attention by Chef at all times.
The location for this hotel is amazing, right next to Ria Formosa. You can get a ferry near the hotel and cross to the beach. The view is also amazing.
The hotel was built on what used to be a fishing village, and some of the buildings have been restored, and there's a museum. A charming experience.
My family and I were on a whirlwind tour of Spain, Portugal, and Morocco and Pousada Convento de Tavira was a place that everyone wanted to go back to. We wish we had spent longer and the staff is above and beyond kind. And the breakfast and pool were outstanding.
It's amazingly comfortable for how small it is (we are a family of 5). The outside area makes the difference, it's really pleasant at night and early morning, with it's nice mango and avocado trees. The location is great to explore the coast of Algarve near Tavira.
Breakfast excellent. Service charming and very helpful. The ambience of the whole site was charming and that’s why we return there. Close to all facilities and attractions. Tavira is an excellent place to eat sea food. A real taste of traditional Portugal.
love this hotel/hostel. wish there were more of them. great location in Tavira - on the river. lots of information and responsiveness from the staff. clean rooms. comfortable beds. great view and a great terrace with great views of the river. truly great!
The hotel was very close to the center of the town, restaurants and ferry to the beach island.
We had a standard room with view over the town and it suited us well.
Very tasty fresh oranges were served at breakfast.
The location was perfect - a quiet area, yet very close to the livelier parts of Tavira. The boat for the Ilha do Tavira (wonderful beach!) was just in front of the hotel, making it more than ideal for summer visits!
We enjoyed getting the ferry to the island to enjoy the beautiful beaches. Breakfast was adequate with plenty of choices. Pool bar was great, good cocktails and snacks. Hotel in quiet location away from town.
Cosy and clean. Host is very helpful. In fact, Jose was one of the highlights of our visit to the Algarve. He is so positive about Tavira and the local region.
