Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We are currently testing a weighted review system in Malta and Iceland (excluding hotel and vacation rental chains). For properties in these countries, the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options may be available (by type of traveller, by score, etc.).

United KingdomNo central heating therefore can be a bit cold. There are individual heaters within the living spaces, my advice would be to set the timers to come on before you return.
Fantastic location, if you have a car - 10 mins to Kirkwall 15 to Stromness then all big attractions within 25. The cottage is recently renovated and has everything you need. Hosts left lovely biscuits for us but we had no contact with them whilst there.

United KingdomWasn’t easy to locate in the dark when we arrived. The shower was really poor so could do with one that’s more powerful. A bath became the better option which was a shame. Lots of woodlouse in the bathroom due to some damp, maybe needs some tlc. The oven took forever to cook food each night, once we eventually got it working after a call to Emma. Turns out you need to put the timer on first then the temperature. The twin room could do with a wardrobe in it and a few more towels for the guests.
Great location - a lovely beach is 5 minutes up the road in the car. You could walk to it, but the only route we could see took you along the main road. Lots of off road parking. Room sizes were good, beds were comfortable, the property was clean, warm and had everything we needed. Lovely clean bedding and towels. Great garden for the dog which he enjoyed! We had an issue with the electrics on our second night but Emma and Sean got it sorted really quickly and were super helpful in resolving the problem.

United KingdomThis is a beautifully presented and cozy property in a stunning location, and not far from Kirkwall or Stromness, and everything in between. We arrived late and the hosts were extremely accommodating in helping us to find the property in the dark, and were there for us whenever we needed them for the duration. Would reccommend this as exceptinal value for money, particularly for a family group.

United KingdomNothing, we really enjoyed staying there
The cottage was lovely, very spacious and clean. It is perfect for anyone with pets or children as has a lovely kitchen with dining table and 3 big bedrooms. The living room was spacious and comfy. We found the location good as we didn't want stay in the middle of town as well as had a car that allowed us to travel. It has a massive garden which was great for the dog.

AustraliaIt did rain every day, but hardly the fault of Emma and Sean.
Spacious, modern and clean. Very conveniently located between Stromness and Kirkwall, on the main island of the Orkneys. A working sheep farm, and the sheep would walk around the back and eat the grass outside the kitchen window. 😀👍

United KingdomOnly 1 table in living room so it was far away for everyone when having like tea/ or drink etc. Could do with a wee nest if tables. & Couple of side lamps instead of just the big light. Would be handy in the kids room to have black out curtains. Wee bench or table & chairs would be lovely outside.
Loved the size of house and garden lots of room for everyone. Location fabulous for everything I would recommend this place. Perfect

United KingdomThe garden isn’t completely secure for dogs but that was a tiny thing for us. I know some folks dogs are escape artists!
Great location (stunning beach 10 minute walk away), everywhere within easy reach. A spacious cottage and garden, warm and spotlessly clean. The beds were super comfy and lovely bedding. Nice decor. Lovely little touches like milk in the fridge, kitchen roll, cling film, salt and pepper etc. Really well equipped, everything we needed and more. We loved the resident sheep out the kitchen window and all the lambs in the fields around the cottage. Emma was a terrific host, she has thought of everything to make your stay as comfortable as possible. Fantastic value for money too!

United KingdomFrustratingly, the dishwasher kept tripping the circuit breaker (the RCD in the workshop) so we ended up washing up by hand. The bathroom got rather cold during the snowy weather and could have done with some more heating. The kitchen cutlery with the plastic handles wasn't very sturdy and we ended up breaking a knife and a fork (sorry).
Very well equipped, excellent attention to detail especially in the kitchen. The tupperware boxes were a nice touch, very handy as we forgot to bring lunchboxes. The Orcadian fudge on arrival made it feel welcoming, and the cooking supplies (salt, pepper, oil etc) were better than we expected. There was fresh kitchen roll and cleaning sponges. The whole house was very clean and well presented. The general impression was of a host who really cares about giving a comfortable and welcoming stay. The heating in the main part of the house was good and the bed was warm and comfortable. The location next to Waulkmill Bay is excellent. It is convenient for both Kirkwall and Stromness, nice and quiet, with good views over Scapa Flow and a nice walk down to the beach. The garden is well tended and very pleasant. The host was very helpful when we got in touch.
