Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We are currently testing a weighted review system in Malta and Iceland (excluding hotel and vacation rental chains). For properties in these countries, the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options may be available (by type of traveller, by score, etc.).

United KingdomHave stayed many times but first time seeing mould in the kitchen which was not pleasant, but the rest was adequate for the cost.

United KingdomThe amount of plastic packaging generated by the breakfasts is horrendous, could do with a rethink over the winter to provide a more environmentally friendly breakfast..

United KingdomThe showers function, but need modernising (the hostel already put up a notice about this). Private room relatively pricey (although we were two in a room sleeping four - the room rate shared between four would have felt more reasonable).
Basic but comfortable bedroom. Nice lounge. Good self-catering facilities (kitchen and dining room). Very pleasant atmosphere. Convenient location for Kirkwall, food shops, and day trips.

United KingdomI was disappointed with the Breakfast which compromised individual cereal packets, ‘fruit pots’, individual yoghurt pots, thinly sliced white bread with jam in individual plastic packets. There was an unacceptable amount of plastic packaging. Some thought should be given to reducing the packaging which is unacceptable in the current climate.
The staff were friendly and helpful and the shared kitchen/dining rooms excellent.

United KingdomThe room was clean and comfortable. The kitchen was well equipped and there were plenty of spaces within the common room. Originally I had been booked in for one night and I was lucky enough to extend my stay for an additional evening with no issues at all. The check in for those of us coming off the ferry was easy to follow, which takes the stress out of arriving somewhere new late in the evening!

North MacedoniaAll the rooms had very heavy fire doors, so whenever someone would close their door it would slam and my bed would shake. Not very pleasant in the evenings. Also, most nights the hostel was noisy.
I stayed for a week at the end of August. The hostel was not full so I had a double room all to myself which was great! The staff was really friendly and the kitchen was very well equipped. The nearest bus stop was about a 10min walk, and the centre was a 20min walk.

GermanyThe furnishing of the rooms is minimalist. It would be desirable if there was a table with at least one chair and a lamp by each bed. Nevertheless, we enjoyed staying here.
As with all the hostels we have stayed at in Scotland, the staff are great: always helpful, friendly and accommodating. We even got some helpful tips for trips off the beaten track. There is a very large lounge.

United KingdomNot having a rubbish bin in the Bedroom. No Milk for General Use in the Kitchen.. Milk Jiggers or Sachets would be good to have on the side, same with Sugar sachets.
Breakfast was overpriced, and not worth £5.95, could have been a little more, like a wrapped croissant or Pain aux Raisin/Danish Whirl Pastry and carton of Orange or Apple Juice included... Staff were helpful with arranging it, but could have been slightly better organised, like having it all packaged up ready in 'Takeaway' style Boxes or Brown bags...a goods delivery had just arrived early morning, and it was as if, they were waiting for the breakfast items to arrive...so I felt a little awkward waiting...I appreciate and recognise that most people who stay in Hostelling Scotland Youth hostels are self catering for themselves, but if they are advertising a Pre-Packed and Pre-arranged Breakfast option, they should ideally have a slightly more robust system in place. A consideration for the future. - Bathrooms were basic, but fully functional. Signage did imply that the showers were going to be upgraded over the winter months, so good, and helpful forward planning... Something to look forward to in the next High Season. No waste paper Bin in my room! Dining Room and Lounge excellent facility, very comfortable.. Good to have a lockable left luggage room in the reception with a secure code Entry system. Staff were very helpful and accomodating and sorted out a small issue I had with changing to a different room...I could not fault them! Great customer Service... Overall a pleasant and enjoyable stay..would recommend Kirkwall Youth Hostel to others.
