How guest reviews work
Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We are currently testing a weighted review system in Malta and Iceland (excluding hotel and vacation rental chains). For properties in these countries, the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
- Politically sensitive comments
- Promotional content
- Illegal activities
- Personal or sensitive information (e.g. emails, phone numbers or credit card info)
- Swear words, sexual references, hate speech, discriminatory remarks, threats, or references to violence
- Spam and fake content
- Animal cruelty
- Impersonation (e.g. if the writer is claiming to be someone else)
- Any violation of our review guidelines.
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
Guidelines and standards for Reviews

Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.

The breakfast wasn't as good as our stays before,especially the sausages,which seemed to be on the cheap side and tasteless.

Check in was a bit of a muddled and it took a while to get a room which matched what we had booked. At breakfast every day we had to ask for something whether that was plates, bowls, cutlery or marmalade, so the organisation of the buffet could improve and the staff could make life easier for themselves.
Location is great and rooms are a good size. All staff were friendly and helpful.

Hotel and rooms are a bit dated, in need of some refurbishment. Our room was a good size and very clean, but a bit basic in terms of furnishings.
Excellent location, friendly staff and excellent food, dinner was particularly good.

For breakfast, there was no menu for vegetarians. A small amount of fresh vegetables and fruits.
Great location. Nice hotel, clean and comfortable.

This hotel was fantastic and nothing could be faulted whatsoever.
We were in a suite which was absolutely stunning. Beautiful views and the rooms were spacious and decorated beautifully. A bottle of wine was waiting for us on arrival. Wish we had booked more than one night.

The fact that when we arrived back late after the concert, my husband asked the bar man how long is the bar open and he replied how long would you like it to be open.

The breakfast was ok - advised that service finished at 09.15am - far too early - but in reality this meant the staff started to remove breakfast at 09.15am in a noisy manner - not pleasant for the guests still trying to enjoy breakfast together. Hot water for tea in a coffee machine jug sat on the top hot plate! Would stay at the hotel again for location but would go out for breakfast

The lack of TLC - needs refreshing coat of paint in the public areas. The hotel's situation is ideal but overall the internals need to be upgraded. Staff did not want to organise a taxi for us as we were travelling to Sunderland, but handed over a number for us to contact - perhaps they should introduce this as better customer service.
Nicely situated hotel in the town of South Shields. It appeared slightly lacking TLC as the room had a few surfaces which were marked and looked unkempt. Main reception area and bar was OK but lacked modernity. Breakfast in the restaurant was very good and the staff were friendly and helpful - good choice of foods.

Bar area needs to have more atmosphere and perhaps dimmed lighting. Bar staff often have other duties elsewhere so not always in attendance

Shower wasn’t up to standard. The water flow was poor and Luke warm. There was no heating or instruction on how to use it.
The location is excellent. Food, both breakfasts and dinners were great. Staff were very pleasant.

We are regular visitors to the little haven. We visit at least twice a month due to having parents in a care home in south shields. The staff are so friendly and helpful and Claire who works on reception has been AMAZING, she always accommodates us and has gone above and beyond to help us in some really difficult times. Thankyou
