Very basic accommodation but, clean and comfortable. Walls in room were white artex, very plain, could do with some colour or prints on the walls, holland had some excellent artists, to give the room some warmth and make it more inviting. Bathroom tiny but adequate. Older people may have trouble with the steep, slanting stairs.

Location. Beautiful old building with character.

It wasn’t that we didn’t like it, but the property is a bit run down- not really from neglect but age. Staff was excellent. Mattresses quite soft. Bathroom clean and updated.

Location of property was excellent. Easy walk from train station and many restaurants and shops literally outside the front door.

Warm rooms, a lot of stairs and loud American neighbours. The walls aren't very sound proof.

Rather than have paper cups in the bedroom for making tea, proper cups would have been good.

Location was fantastic and the bed was so comfortable.

    "The hotel with the soul"

You hear people from other rooms too much (voices, toilet&shower using etc); so, they hear much of you too..

"The hotel with the soul" was my first thought when I entered the hall. It feels very "home-like". And everything (incl. tea&coffee sets in the room) demonstrates that you are welcomed. Great location.

Probably the mattresses should be changed. I agree with other comments concerning the beds. The quality of the towels also could be improved.

The situation of the hotel is just perfect. Close to everything, on a beautiful water channel. The Deluxe room on the 1st floor is very spacious with three huge windows overlooking the passing by cyclists. The breakfast is just enough, you can get savory or-and sweet version of it. A place to come back for sure.

    Disposable coffee cups

The characterful hotel was next to a canal in an excellent location. The bedrooms were all different but ours on the first floor was superb (and very big). Breakfast, in the attractive breakfast room, was plentiful; bread-based with some ham, cheese, eggs, cereal, juice etc. The staff were friendly.

The building shows its age in one or two areas but that did not detract from our stay at all.

Comfortable and very clean. Friendly, relaxed, helpful staff. Continental breakfast was plentiful and fresh. Lovely old building in a fantastic location, it is in a beautiful part of the city, every corner we walked round showed us more beautiful buildings, squares or canals. Not quite such a pretty walk to the station but it barely ten minutes away, and of course it is a flat walk. A small point but it is great having chairs in the room so we didn't have to sit on the bed all the time.

Best to come by public transport, driving is discouraged. We had to drive for logistical reasons though. You can park alongside the canals but it costs €28 per 24 hours, and there is no shorter duration you can stay. Otherwise the nearest parking garages are around 5-10 mins walk.

Perfect location for exploring the old city, lovely old traditional hotel with some rooms overlooking the canal. Generous Dutch breakfast buffet. Friendly managers. Glad that my elderly parents were able to have a ground floor room as stairs to upper floors were a little steep.

The sound of the room is almost zero, because you can hear people walking in the upstairs room, taking a shower in the next room, even with the carpeted floor. The mattress could be better, because it has a lot of spring.

The location of the hotel is very good, relatively close to everything. The cleanliness of the room was very good The front desk of the hotel could be more visible, even closer to the entrance of the hotel. .

Be prepared to climb a long flight of steep stairs! In truth it didn’t bother me, but you should message the hotel beforehand if you find stairs difficult.

If you are a lone traveller, looking for a clean room at a reasonable price and you fancy staying in a very old, traditional property, at the edge of the canal and less than 5 min walk from Leiden’s university quarter or a myriad of shops and eateries, then De Doelen is ideal.
