There is a lot of history in Barcaldine regarding the formation of the then Labour Party, the first political party in Australia. It is well told, from the free detailed information boards surrounding the famous Tree of Knowledge to the workers Heritage Centre. Easy to access everything, no parking problems, lots of pubs, some open, some not, (if you are interested).
Locals not exactly friendly, tourist seem to be viewed as outsiders (must admit only interacted with 3 or 4 shops in the area, but we appeared to be a hindrance they wanted out of their shop). Our motel staff were excellent, friendly and helpful cannot speak highly enough.
A small quaint country town, lots to see and do! Don't just bypass it, there is the Tree of Knowledge monument, the Australian Workers Heritage Centre, Alice River, Ski Park, Lara Wetlands! Worth a stay for a night or two to take it all in. I wish we had more time to stay to check it out but with a busy schedule and events to attend we definitely didn't get enough time to explore. For those who are mobile, leave the car at home, everything is an easy walk on paved streets and is super safe. Though if a car is needed, ample parking everywhere with large parking spaces. Limited food options are available, a few pub meals, the ski park diner and Turf & Surf is around but keep in mind opening hours vary differently from the city. The IGA is full and well supplied but again, keep in mind opening hours differ and it is closed on a Sunday.
Beyond belief. It’s so run down & dingy it’s sad. I wouldn’t recommend anyone stay here unless they’re desperate. Carpets are stained, 2 seater sofa stained, Bed sheets clean but bed was broken, walls dirty, just yuck.
The town is well catered for in retail stores, and jas some interesting history, but the time of year we were there coincided with some kind of agricultural process resulting in the town being enveloped in an odour some may find unpleasant.
Barcaldine is a wonderful place, wonderful history and great pride in the town. People ovbviously care about the town. I felt welcomed there. I particularly like the water ski area. It's a great asset to have. It was great to walk around the town and see so much of the history of the area. Thankyou Barcaldine.
