Milford Sound (0.4 miles from Milford Sound Airport)
Fiordland Discovery offers a scenic overnight boat cruise around New Zealand's iconic Milford Sound. One of the top things we did on our 5 week journey in Australia, New Zealand and Singapore. Couldn’t recommend enough. It was so special to stay in the sound for a night, only our boat. We went kayaking and there was no one else there. Morning cruise when the sun was rising and we were the only boat there… will never forget this. When we come back, we’ll definitely book an overnight cruise again.

I think when I go back for another visit, I will stay at least 3 full days to really saturate myself with the amazing sereneity of the place. For nature lovers, they will surely be amazed with this place. The changing beauty every moment of the day is captivating! Along the drive to Milford Sound, there's beauty everywhere. Stop at the open flat fields where you can view afar the magnificent shapes of the mountains. Stop at Milford Downs where you a picturesque shot of the lake and Gunn lake, to and when on returning back to Te Anau, different perspectives of the view. There's no doubt there's a very high being who created this magnificent natture.
Milford Sound is the most magical place that you can visit. We booked to stay 2 nights having stayed in Queenstown. Queenstown was beautiful and we loved it with it vibrancy and huge number of activities. Milford Sound was beautiful in a completely different way. Appearing untouched, it is the most spectacular scenery with incredible treks. As we stayed at Milford Sound Lodge, we were able to wake up to the local Kea clambering for attention. For the few hours that we had without the tourist buses, cannot be understated. We took a cruise which is mandatory but it still impresses beyond expectations. Whether you're a trekker or simply wanting to relax and enjoy the beauty and majesty of the area, you will be blown away. The Lodge's staff, food and recommendations are invaluable. Enjoy!
We were lucky in that we could afford to stay at the lodge for two nights, it’s a long trip, 4 hours, from Queenstown to do in one day. There are not many signs along the way telling you how far it is until your destination, that would have helped. Take your time if you are driving and stop a long the way, the views an hour away from Milford Sound are just as stunning as Milford Sound itself. Be aware parking costs $25 per day at Milford Sound although you can park up for 20 minutes without paying. It gets very very busy so leave plenty of time to park and walk to the boat terminal. Pre-book your boat tour.
The location is scenically beautiful. The mosquitoes are intense. The only reason to visit is to do the cruise. We should have done a day trip out of TeAnau which was lovely and saved the exorbitant costs associated with a stay at Milford Sound Lodge which was extremely disappointing. Staffed by well intentioned backpackers, the place lacked any semblance of hospitality expertise and finesse.
