Hotel Itxas Gain overlooks the Cantabrico Sea. Centrally located close to everything in this lovely Basque fishing village only a daytrip to Donostia-San Sebastian. The staff were wonderfully hospitable and we discovered many local treasures with their help. The 'streetside grilled fish' and local wine gives this area such a great reputation. Lots of cute bars with fresh pinchos (Basque tapas) – Txakoli are fun to order at pintxos bars which is poured high above the glass. We had the great fortune to visit the wooden maritime themed San Salvador Church during choir practice and enjoyed hearing their complex choral arrangements sung in the Basque language.
We loved being able to walk along the port and see all the fishing boats bring their fresh catch ashore – straight to the restaurants. Such a happy-energy town!

We stayed in Getaria as a base to enjoy all of the surrounding areas. It was well situated between towns. We saw a soccer game in Bilbao one night and drove to France the next day. We enjoyed walking around Getaria in the mornings and the kids played on playgrounds around the town. It seems very peaceful! Great vistas of the ocean.

Getaria is a small port with 2 streets of restaurants and bars, but it is a charming place to visit the Flysch(Itsrun) and not far from San Sebastian. The txakoli vineyards in the area are charming and the seafood is also good.

In Getaria you have a wide range of restaurants to choose from, and lively tapas bars , a very good outdoor bar overlooking the harbor .
Safe beaches to swim , very clean.
Lovely walks to Zumaia on the St James Way , and to Zarautz
It’s also well worth going to the top of San Anton , for the lovely views
Our apartment was perfect to enjoy all these things .

An "ok" place to use as a base for day-trips in the Bilbao/...
An "ok" place to use as a base for day-trips in the Bilbao/San Sebastian area. However, Getaria is a very small village. Other than a beach and restaurants, there's not much to do. Having said that, it is an excellent location as a base to visit the many, many other areas/sites in this Northern Spain area. However, if I was looking for a "home base" I would probably stay in the next town over, Zazautz.

Very expensive. Trying to compete with San Sebastian.
Very expensive. Trying to compete with San Sebastian. Beaches are great. Place is not dog freindly. Usual problem - when restaurant says open from 11am to 11pm, beware the kitchen will not be open for those times.
Everything about our stay was wonderful! The grounds were lovely and the apartment was equally beautiful, as well as well-stocked and comfortable. The location was about 30 minutes to San Sebastián and an hour to Bilbao. For us, the location was perfect. The house itself is set just up a hill outside Getaria among beautiful and peaceful vineyards. We didn't make it to a vineyard, but there were many close by. The host was very friendly and met us upon arrival. Every morning we had a view of the ocean from our breakfast table.
We loved the hotel. It had eveything we needed: the room was very clean plus there was a tea kettle in it, the breakfast had a wide selection of foods (beside the usual options there were some specials too, like tortilla de patatas, guacamole, etc.), it was in a very calm and silent area, and it was a short walk from the center of the town. Additionally, the hosts were very friendly and helpful. They recommended us good restaurants and things to do in the area.
We really enjoyed our time there. We'd love to go back again.
We really loved Getaria, and will def. stay here again. The hotel is very cozy, staff is super friendly, and breakfast has homemade bakery. The restaurant downstairs is a must, best fish I ate ever, freshly caught by the town’s fisherpersons. The town is small and cute, you can walk to zarauz and you can get to zumaia to see the flysch (another must). Parking is free, except in the summer season (Which can be rainy!) My advice, visit in May!
Javier, Sara and the other family members were delightful. They were fluent in English. The facility was fabulous and had a view from their deck that was dramatic. Great shower!
The hotel referred our group of Camino del Norte pilgrims to a seafood restaurant that everyone raved about. In addition to superb food, they had an extensive wine selection.
Really nice place to stay when you travel by car and visiting surrounding villages. Short drive uphill from Getaria, also walkable. Big guesthouse in the middle of vineyards. Local and authentic feel. Nice view from balcony. Room was even better than seen from photos and for reasonable price. Very nice and helpful staff.
Nice owner.
Good check-in with convenient keyless locks.
Brand new place.
Amazing restaurants right across from the hotel. All with wood-fired grills.
Convenient to beach and bus stop.
Great walk up the hill partially by escalator and elevator(surprise!) to a green valley of vineyards and gardens. Beautiful!
Lovely hotel. Very well placed. Magnificent room, wonderfully equipped. Beautiful terrace with breathtaking sea views. Pleasant bathroom, equipped with numerous amenities and whirlpool bathtub also with sea view.
Welcoming, attentive, available and considerate staff.
Parking available not far away recommended.
We had an amazing stay at Juanjo’s place !
The place is well decorated, the breakfast delicious. Juanjo and his family gave us a warm welcome and was always available for recommendations !
The place is just 10min walking from Getaria and you can enjoy nice sunrise and sunset.
We’ll come back happily :)
Small cosy hotel run by 2 friendly sisters. Love the homely environment with sofas, dining tables and kitchen with glasses, plates, cutlery where you can have your own meals. Lovely view of the rolling hills and vineyards, and the sea. Wish we had stayed longer so we can do more hikes around the place.
Fantastic location, right outside the old village (wonderful fish restaurants ) and less then 5 min from the beach.
Getaria is a very cosy place with a nice beach.I highly recommend it. There are frequent buses to San Sebastian.
Absolutely the most comfortable beds in Spain! The owners are also super nice and helpful. It’s very cute, nice decorations, and good common area. And soooo many showers! Large private showers! I really didn’t want to leave!
Perfect guesthouse right on the Camino. Lovely hosts who gave us great tips for the next day of walking. worth carrying on from Zarautz to Getaria because it’s an easy extra walk and gives you a good head start the next day.
Location, location, location. This is a great small hotel , 2 min walk to town, 5 min to the beach. Fabulous value and vineyard views from our window. Staff are amazing and breakfast was plentiful 🙂
