Fantastic traditional inn. Comfortable. Personable. Kind staff. Incredible breakfast; best we had during our 2 weeks in Europe. Dinner was also terrific. Will come again!

Breakfast was fine and quite substantial. Dinner had a good selection and was well cooked.
The location was a bit hard to find and a lot further from Penrith that we were expecting

The whole place is just lovely! The photos don’t quite capture how nice the interior is. The location is also beautiful, extremely peaceful, the beds are very comfortable and the pub downstairs does really good food.

Fantastic 2 bedroom cottage in a pretty village. I stayed here with my dog to break up the long drive home from Scotland to Norfolk. It’s in an ideal location not far from Carlisle, and right next door to a great little pub where I had a lovely meal.

We liked everything about the String of Horses. Our room with a King bed was large, bed was comfortable and bathroom a good size and remodeled. Bar had great atmosphere with a nice fire. Dinner was excellent.

It is a really good area to stay as it is close to so many attractions. On the River Eden with beautiful walks and views. Excellent places to eat in Armathwaite and nearby. (highly recommend Fox and Pheasant). You need your own transport to get around. We have not found anything to avoid in the 4 years we have been coming here and come at least twice yearly.

There is so much to explore in the area as it is close to Scottish border and 'The Lakes'. There is something to see and somewhere to go in every direction.
I ate at several local places. The Fox and Pheasant do really good meals/snacks and I had a lovely Sunday Lunch with relations at 'The Heather Glen country house'.
You really need to have your own transport for this area to be able to explore.
I don't think I have found anything to avoid yet in 4 years of coming here.

Great base for exploring the Lakes.
Great base for exploring the Lakes. Armathwaite is very scenic and a good walking area. Also situated on the Settle to Carlisle railway.
We had all of our meals at the Fox and Pheasant. The food was excellent. We did call for a coffee at the other pub in the village, The Dukes Head, this was also very nice and friendly.

We enjoyed the simplicity and effortless hospitality of our hosts. After we enquired about local walks one member of the team came back to us with a hand written guide to take us through the local woodland and beauty spots and described a whole variety of other short walks that we might enjoy.
