Cross Keys Hotel, hotel in Canonbie

Located in Canonbie, 26 miles from Thirlwall Castle, Cross Keys Hotel provides accommodations with a restaurant, free private parking and a bar.

Wonderful staff and breakfast. The bar/dining area was cozy and great to meet/greet other travelers! Kudos to Stan, the Missus, and Darren. Hopefully the Cross Keys Hotel in Canonbie will achieve National Trust-worthy potential. A better location right on the Borders, in Liddesdale, I cannot imagine (Hermitage Castle does not have adequate accommodations). ;) I woke up the first morning there with a Borders ballad tune playing in my head (I am NOT making this up). And the history of the place - no comparison - going back to the 1600's, when it was an inn and carriage house on the Edinburgh - Carlisle road. Living history - who were the historical personages that overnighted here?

Was initially just a layover on the drive from Edinburgh to London but turned out to be a nice, quiet place with some interesting history and kind people. I liked the church and graveyard, walk by the river and all the cute houses with flower gardens. There's a heritage walk too but didn't get a chance to do it. Stone's throw from Hadrian's Wall and Gretna Green for shopping and exploring. If you like peace and quiet, history and old buildings plus supporting small communities, definitely swing by.

Only stayed the night, arrived late evening and left early morning so don't know anything about the area - other than it was very quiet, and rural with no sign of much activity - however I just visited the hotel which was great

Canonbie is a small village with the Cross Keys hotel at the one end. It is a couple of hundred years old and full of character. Food was excellent and served by polite and obliging staff. They will cater for all types. (I am Diabetic and Coeliac). I would certainly stay there again. They are getting over the effects of Covid on the establishment but are making great strides in their recovery. They deserve your patronage.

A very pretty little village with great walks up and down the local river. We found a cute little painted stone trail made up by local children with small and large hand painted pebble located all along the stone wall running by the river. Much fun to follow this and try to find them all.
