Stayed here to be close to family know the area...
Stayed here to be close to family know the area very well. We now live in Devon. The area is close to many attractions. It is in a beautiful quiet area but not too far from Durham city with it's amazing Cathedral and castle. The METRO CENTRE probably the best shopping centre in Britain. For those wanting a family fun day out Beamish Museum is a must, a working coal miners village. Ride the trams have a picnic by the bandstand take a look into the past and try dressing up in Victorian costumes and have your photos taken. Meet a hurdygirdi man and buy produce in the Victorian shops or relax with a pot of tea and a stotie with ham and pease pudding. Beach lovers can drive to the coast in around 30 mins and country lovers will love the vast expanse of Hamsterly forest. History lovers may be interested in the local Roman fort. So much to do so little time, enjoy.

Hunwick is tiny. It is perhaps 2 miles from Bishop Auckland.
Hunwick is tiny. It is perhaps 2 miles from Bishop Auckland. It is a good base for exploring County Durham and neighbouring areas which are full of history, beautiful countryside, excellent walking, great museums of all kinds stately homes and historic sites.
I went to Bishop Auckland specifically for 'Kynren' - an amazing spectacle, and to go to the Mining Arts Gallery, a wonderful, and moving, collection of the work of the mining artists of the 30s and the Bishop Trevor Gallery in the Bishops Palace - and to check up on progress on the 'Auckland Project' - restoring the former Bishops Palace and reviving Bishop Auckland as a place which people like to live in and visit. I ate in the Quarry Burn (excellent), in Wetherspoons - v. good, and I had tea in the Fifteas Vintage Tearoom - great fun especially for those of us who remember those days. Personal transport is probably essential to make the most of what this area has to offer but without transport I saw plenty in the limited time I had and had my appetite whetted for more visits.
