Centre of Upper Weardale, a town with character in the shadow of old limestone quarries, lead mining and continuing sheep farming. Well placed for Barnard Castle and Teesdale, Durham City and not far from the Yorkshire Dales and Cumbria's Lake District.
Walk from St John's Chapel to Wearhead by the river then back on the valley high road to the north parallel to the river. Or investigate Slits Wood a beautiful river walk past waterfalls to an old lead mining site. Cranesbill in May, holly and hawthorn berries in the winter.

We traveled for the train to Christmas town at Weardale railway with our Grandkids. This cottage was plenty big enough for us all to enjoy and the location to the train station couldn't have been better. Two days in Beamish museum was fab aswell.

Bit if an eyeopener.
Bit if an eyeopener. We have lived in villages from Yorkshire to the Scottish Highlands but Stanhope was a revelation ; all kinds of shops selling all sorts of produce. We strolled along the High Street ( Front Street ? ) on the morning of our departure, stopping to look at the butcher's shop, the fruit and vegetable shop, the shoe shop ( honest ! ) etc. Absolutely delightful and the locals so friendly. We had our dog in tow and all the pubs were dog friendly.
It even boasts its own castle.

A nice little town with a selection of shops for food ie. Bakers, butchers, chip shop and a couple of nice pubs. Lots and lots of walks around either in the dales or by the river and an outdoor heated swimming pool in the centre (although the constant rain stopped us from using this). Beautiful setting, very picturesque.
